Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The deterioration of concrete in structure is a result of several degradation mechanisms and results in a decrease in the integrity of the structure. The state of deterioration is often hidden from view and is only evident at a stage where there is a significant reduction in the load carrying capacity. Ensuring better performance of concrete structures requires early detection of defects. Defects are often introduced during casting and detection during in-service life is often too late to remedy the situation.

This book was released on 2012-02-08 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focused on effectiveness of NDTs for detection of concrete deterioration or defects. Tests were performed to evaluate the feasibility of using Impact-Echo Method and Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity Test in detecting defect and determining its depth during the early age concrete (between days 3 to day 28). Tests were performed on two RC Slabs Grade 30 and 40 at day 3,7,14 and 28 with a fabricated void at a known location. Tests were also performed to examine theoretically the relationship between the porosity of concrete at each stage and different strength with the accuracy of void depth detected. Both methods could detect defect in specimens during the early age. However, in the determination of depth of defect, Impact-Echo Test gave more accurate results. It is concluded that both methods can be used to assess the in-situ properties of concrete or as means for quality control on site since both tests could detect defects from day 3 and the accuracy ranges 55.75% to 99.05% from day 3 to day 28.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concrete floors should be diagnosed in order to obtain the proper durability. Non-destructive testing (NDT) methods, which have numerous advantages and are very effective for in situ testing, are recommended for this purpose. Non-Destructive Diagnostics of Concrete Floors: Methods and Case Studies offers useful NDT methods, test methodologies, and case studies. This book contains classifications of NDT methods, examines their areas of usefulness in floor diagnostics, and explains the complementarity and reliability of NDT methods as well as the need to calibrate research equipment. It presents interesting case studies of concrete floors, such as dowelled floors, floors with a top layer made of stone slabs, industrial floors, industrial floors with a top layer of polyurethane-cement, layered floors, post-tensioned floors, and cement screeds. The authors have drawn on many years of experience in both academia and the practical diagnosis of concrete floors using NDT methods.

Book excerpt: This authoritative book provides a comprehensive review of the highly important subject of non-destructive evaluation of reinforced concrete structures. Engineers have a range of sophisticated techniques at their disposal to assess the condition of reinforced concrete structures that do not cause material damage and which usually enable the structure to be used while the surveys are carried out. Non-destructive evaluation of the infrastructure also plays a key role in calculating and prioritising where money should be spent on repair or replacement. Providing details of related techniques and case studies, this book offers an overview of how to plan and implement the NDT of reinforced concrete structures.

Book excerpt: Infrared thermography (IRT) is a non-contact, non-invasive methodology which allows for detection of thermal energy that is radiated from objects in the infrared band of the electromagnetic spectrum, for conversion of such energy into a visible image (such as a surface temperature map). This feature represents a great potential to be exploited in a vast variety of fields from aerospace to civil engineering, to medicine, to agriculture, etc. However, IRT is still not adequately enclosed in industrial instrumentation and there are still potential users who might benefit from the use of such a technique and who are not aware of their existence. This e-book conveys information about basic IRT theory, infrared detectors, signal digitalization and applications of infrared thermography in many fields such as medicine, foodstuff conservation, fluid-dynamics, architecture, anthropology, condition monitoring, non destructive testing and evaluation of materials and structures. The volume promotes an exchange of information between the academic world and industry, and shares methodologies which were independently developed and applied in specific disciplines.

The fields of application are vast, such as, materials science, life sciences and applied engineering. This book offers a collection of ten chapters with three major sections - relating to application of infrared thermography to study problems in materials science, agriculture, veterinary and sports fields as well as in engineering applications. Both mathematical modeling and experimental aspects of IRT are evenly discussed in this book. It is our sincere hope that the book meets the requirements of researchers in the domain and inspires more researchers to study IRT.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourth Structural Materials Technology NDT Conference was held in Atlantic City, New Jersey, with over sixty speakers presenting on a wide variety of topics. The goal of this conference was to inform engineers and researchers of the new nondestructive testing/nondestructive evaluation (NDT/NDE) technologies and techniques available for use in transportation construction. The use of alternative materials is challenging NDT/NDE professionals to develop new methods or modify existing techniques to address quality control, quality assurance, and long-term monitoring of structures built or strengthened with these materials. One such alternative is fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) products. This conference included papers on this topic and a panel discussion that focused on the future of NDT/NDE technologies for structures built or rehabilitated with FRP composites. These proceedings contain the 62 papers that were presented at the conference, arranged according to session number. An author index is included.

Book excerpt: The research and its outcomes presented in this book treat applications of NDT techniques to on-site measurements. These on-site measurements have been marginally successful as each technique requires a particular analysis. In this regard, visualization and imaging of results are in great demand for practitioners and engineers for inspection. This volume, in which on-site measurements of concrete and masonry structures by NDT techniques are comprehensively summarized, focuses on the visualization procedure of the results measured. The book will therefore be of great value to the field.
