The author concludes that: 1) each of the programming elements studied can add value to the transition process, and 2) transitional programming must provide a variety of social and academic support opportunities to students and families.

It is also beneficial to understand that having their most basic of needs met is a critical element if they are to have a successful transition. In an effort to gain further understanding, the researcher examined Maslow0́9s Hierarchy of Needs theory (Francis, 2012), Schlossberg's Transition theory (Evans, Forney, Guido, Patton & Renn, 2010) and Chickering's Adult Transition theory (Evans, et al., 2010). The purpose of this study is to understand, from the student perspective what helps students to have a successful transition to college during the freshman year. It is critical for freshman students to have a successful transition to college. If they are not successful during their first year, they are likely to not continue and complete their college education (Mayhew, Vanderlinden & Kim, 2009). This poses a problem for institutions that put effort into recruiting students; it is vital that they retain the students they recruit. It also creates an issue for the student and their families. Many universities have special programs targeting freshman students in an effort to aide in their transition and help it to be a successful year. The institution has a responsibility to provide students with every possible opportunity for success (Mayhew et al., 2009). An online questionnaire was distributed via email to currently enrolled students that had completed a freshman seminar course during their academic career at a public university in Northern California. There were 62 respondents; 43 of those respondents identified as female and 14 identified as male. Twenty-seven respondents were in their fourth year of college; twenty-one of respondents indicated they were in their fifth year of college. The research presented in this study indicates how most respondents found social activities and the freshman seminar course to be the most beneficial in their transition to college. Further research could be conducted to investigate what specifically students find to be beneficial in the freshman seminar course and how to improve the curriculum. This information can help to guide administrators as they plan programming and coursework for freshman students.

Book excerpt: Many researchers focus on the structure of small learning communities called “freshman academies” to identify transition strategies that impact student attendance, behavior, and academic achievement. The purpose of this study was to identify the freshman transition strategies high school and feeder middle school administrators perceive impact student attendance, behavior, and academic achievement. Identifying the perceived transition strategies from high school administrators and feeder middle school administrators could inform districts of the research foundation and professional development needed for the implementation of impactful transition strategies to help all students successfully transition from middle to high school. This study explored transition problems from middle to high school; essential components related to attendance, behavior, and academic achievement; and successful transition programs. Qualitative data were collected from face-to-face interviews using open-ended questions and were analyzed by the researcher to identify emerging themes. Several themes emerged from the data that helped identify the transition strategies high school and feeder middle school administrators perceived impact student attendance, behavior, and academic achievement. The study provided a connection between related literature and the study’s findings. The study’s findings indicated that high school administrators perceived summer transition camps, clear and consistent communication, and providing students with support from trusted adults impact student transition related to student attendance, behavior, and academic achievement. Middle school administrators perceived having advisory to communicate expectations, positive reinforcement, and strong instruction prepares students for the transition from middle to high school.

Specifically, this study aimed to measure academic success by focusing upon ninth grade End of Course Test (EOCT) scores. The data were collected using a researcher-developed survey. After securing permission from all superintendents, the survey was electronically mailed to all high school principals within the state of Georgia. Among participating systems, the survey response rate was 78.4 percent. Based upon expert opinion, the twenty individual intervention items were categorized into three domains. The domain data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA). The researcher also ran correlative analysis. The results of this study indicated that no statistical significance existed regarding the implementation of freshman transition interventions and ninth grade EOCT scores. These results have probable implications for public school systems within the state of Georgia as how to best design the most effective programming for incoming ninth graders. Additionally, this information can assist educators, both at the district and state level, in designing the most effective and cost-effective strategies for transition intervention.
