Book excerpt: Results of an experimental program, designed to test a time at load fatigue failure hypothesis for composites, are discussed. In order to minimize the influence of various test and material variables, testing was performed using a trapezoidal loading waveform with constant loading rates and sufficiently long hold times at load to minimize the effect of hysteresis heating. The results indicate that the fatigue life of [(0/ ±45/90)s]2 T300/5208 graphite-epoxy specimens can be explained by using time at load as a fatigue criterion.

Book excerpt: The fatigue behavior of surface-notched [(0/± 45/0)s]3 T300/5208 graphite-epoxy specimens was studied over the temperature range from room temperature to 421 °F (216 °C). The specimens, after being subjected to two lifetimes of a 135 000-cycle tension-dominated flight-by-flight spectrum, were nondestructively inspected (using tetrabromoethane-enhanced X-ray radiography and C-scanning) and then tested at room temperature to determine their residual strengths. The test results show that both the extent of matrix damage and residual strengths increase with fatigue test temperature. If the fatigue-induced matrix damage region (FIMDR) is the same size or smaller than the delamination region observed prior to static failure, then the residual and static strengths are equal. If the FIMDR is larger than the delamination prior to static failure, then the residual strength is higher than the static strength. Finally, the residual strength is less than the net section strength.

Book excerpt: A model previously developed by the authors to predict the effect of loading sequence on the statistical distribution of the fatigue life and residual strength of composite materials has been generalized and applied to graphite/epoxy [0/90/45/-45]s laminates. The load sequence effects have been shown to be caused in general by the difference in residual strength when failure occurs (boundary effect) and the effect of previously applied loads (memory effect). The present model permits isolation of the memory effect from the boundary effect and estimations of the magnitude of the memory effect under dual levels of fatigue loadings. The model parameters were evaluated from baseline data, including static strength, fatigue life, and residual strength tests. Predictions of the material response were then made and verified with additional fatigue life and residual strength testing. It was shown that the material memory effect is insignificant for this material and correlations between predictions of the number of early failures agreed quite well with the verification tests. Predictions of the fatigue life and residual strength degradation under dual stress levels were also in good agreement with the test results.

Book excerpt: The effect of temperature on the tension-tension fatigue life of the T300/5208 graphite/epoxy angle-ply laminate system was investigated in an effort to develop an acceptable and reliable method of accelerated loading. Typical S log sub 10 N curves were determined experimentally at 25 C, 75 C, and 115 C. The time-temperature superposition principle was employed to find the shift factors of uniaxial fatigue strength, and a general linear equation of S log sub 10 N for shifting purpose was established. The combined techniques of cyclic creep measurements and optical microscopy upon fatigue failure allow some assessment of the possible physical basis of S log 10 N curve shifting. Before fatigue, the laminates at all test temperatures and stress levels undergo a unique damage mechanism during fatigue loading. It is concluded that an accelerated loading method is feasible. Book excerpt: Results of an experimental investigation of damage development in T300/5208 graphite epoxy laminates subjected to tension-tension cyclic loading are reported. The concept of laminate stiffness reduction as a damage analogue is shown to be a valuable means of test control and damage interpretation. The relationship between stiffness and number of cycles is shown to be unique for each laminate type studied, each possessing three distinct stages, but markedly different among the laminate types. By using two complementary nondestructive evaluation (NDE) techniques, edge replication and penetrant-enhanced stereo X- ray radiography along with a method for deploying fatigue-damaged specimens, the stages of stiffness reduction were found to correspond variously to the predominance of matrix cracking or delamination or interactions of these matrix damage modes. A number of subordinate matrix damage modes including interior delamination, microcracking, and longitudinal splitting are identified with the matrix cracks which produce them.

Book excerpt: The main objective of this research investigation was the effect of compressive loading on the fatigue response of graphite epoxy laminates as influenced by a circular hole and an aggressive environment. The investigation was undertake n in order to further characterize the behavior of graphite/epoxy laminates under fatigue loading. The primary emphasis of the program was on the accumulation of a statistically significant data base. Unnotched coupon properties of a quasi-isotropic and a 67% 0 degrees fiber laminate were investigated in a 82.2 degrees C (180 degrees F), 90% R.H. environment after prior conditioning in that environment. The interactional effects of absorbed moisture and fatigue loading on the fatigue lifetime of coupons containing a circular hole was investigated at room temperature and at 82.2 degrees C (180 degrees F), 90% R.H. using the quasi-isotropic laminate. The test program consisted of static tension and compression tests; tension-tension and tension-compression fatigue tests; and static tension and compression residual strength tests of coupons prior tested either under tension-tension or tension-compression fatigue loading. Book excerpt: The fatigue response of a [(0/45/90/ -45)s]4 T300-5208 graphite/epoxy laminate with a drilled center hole subjected to constant-amplitude, fully reversed tension-compression loading was investigated. Damage evaluation techniques such as stiffness monitoring, penetrant-enhanced X-ray radiography, C-scan, laminate deply, and residual strength were used to establish the mechanisms of damage development as well as the relations between this damage and the stiffness, strength, and life of the laminate. Two load levels provided for fatigue lives of 105 to 106 cycles and significant stiffness reductions. Damage initiated at the hole as matrix cracking parallel to the fibers in all plies. Matrix cracks had a significant effect on delamination initiation and growth. Delaminations initiated near the surface in the densely cracked region at the hole and grew along major matrix cracks. Delaminations of smaller extent developed later throughout the interior of the laminate and followed similar growth patterns as those closer to the surface. Compressive properties degraded more rapidly than tensile properties. At the stress levels used in this investigation, residual tensile strength increased early in the fatigue life and remained approximately constant to near the end of life, when failure was precipitated by excessive laminate instability during the compressive portion of the loading.

Book excerpt: The fatigue behavior of a notched, graphite/epoxy (T300/5208) laminate subjected to predominantly compressive loading was explored in a series of constant amplitude and transport wing spectrum tests. Results of these tests indicated that (1) the amount of local (near the notch) buckling allowed in the tests significantly affected fatigue life; (2) spectrum truncation of either the high- or low-load end of the spectrum produced lives greater than those obtained in the baseline, complete-spectrum test, but life was much more sensitive to truncations at the high-load end; and (3) the Palmgren-Miner linear cumulative damage theory always predicted lives much longer than the actual spectrum loading test lives.

Book excerpt: This report presents the results of the first task of a three task program directed at the study of relationship between damage propagation and residual static strength of composite laminates. In Task 1: Preliminary screening, two laminates a 24-Ply 67% 0 deg. fiber and a 32-Ply quasi-isotropic laminate of T300/5208 graphite epoxy material were selected for study. Two damage types were studied, a low velocity impact condition (i.e., simulated tool drop) and a badly drilled hole. An initial study was conducted for each damage type to determine the detailed damage introduction parameters resulting in the selection of one set of impact and one set of poor drilling conditions. Baseline static tension and static compression tests were conducted on each of the four damage/laminate conditions. Stress vs life (S-N) fatigue data were then generated at range ratio R=-1 for each of the four conditions. The damage growth characteristics were monitored on each fatigue specimen using a modified Holscan ultrasonic unit. A subset of the damaged hole specimens was also evaluated in static compression and fatigue (R = -1) using TBE enhanced X-ray methods to monitor damage growth and to assess any detrimental effect of TBE on subsequent behavior of the damage. The results indicate significant reduction in initial static tension and compression strengths for the damaged hole condition in both laminates.

This book was released on 1976 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of this research investigation was the experimental determination of the effect of compressive loading on the fatigue response of graphite/epoxy lamiantes. The primary emphasis of the program was on the accumulation of a statistically significant data base. The data base was to be used for developing an analytical model with predictive capability to account for the effect of compressive loading. The test program included only unnotched coupons in a room temperature, laboratory air environment. The test program consisted of static tensile and compressive tests; tension-tension and tension-compression fatigue tests; and tensile and compressive residual strength tests of coupons tested either under tension-tension or tension-compression fatigue loading. The development of a large, statistically meaningful data base was accomplished. The general effect of compression on the fatigue response of a graphite/epoxy composite was determined. However, a general model with capability to account for compressive loading was not attempted. As an alternate, the concept of a fatigue threshold was postulated along with consideration of some substantiating data. Analysis of the data showed that due to the extent of data scatter, a model of the 'wear-out' or similar type would predict the need for unacceptably low stress levels to achieve the high probabilities of survival required for aircraft structures.
