It is a major oil palm planter in Malaysia. While there are books written on the ecological and economical aspects of the oil palm industry, there is no book written specifically on the treatment processes of palm oil mill effluent. This book is written based on a year study case in a medium-sized palm oil mill in the northern region of Sabah. It is written in the simplest way of expression and accompanied by many photos and diagrams to ease understanding. Discussions include treatment processes that occurred in the pre-, primary, secondary and tertiary treatment stages. Readers will find it to be a useful reference especially university students.

Furthur studies would futher increase profitability of palm oil industries besides solving environmental problems. POME has great potential as substrate because it has low cost and also it contains a mixture of carbohydrates binding, hemicelluloses, sucrose, and other carbohydrates that can be utilized by saccharolytic clostria. This research mainly to study the effect of temperature to the solventogenic fermentation using clostridia.acetobutylicum in producing butanol and ethanol by using palm oil mill effluent (POME) as a fermentation media. This research also to investigate the type of sugar that contain in POME, the profile growth rate of clostridia acetobutylicum and then to investigate consumption of glucose by clostridia acetobutylicum during fermentation. The experiment works were conducted in schott bottle in anaerobic chamber to maintain anaerobic condition. Fermentation was carried out for 72 hour at 35°C with the concentration of POME at 90% and inoculums concentration at 10%. Palm oil mill effluent and reinforced clostridia medium was used as a growth medium in batch culture. The temperature that used in this investigation is 33°C, 34°C, 35°C and 37°C. The result of this investigation showed that POME is a viable media for butanol and ethanol fermentation. The result also showed that the yield of butanol and ethanol production will decrease as the temperature increase. The results showed that the highest yield of butanol produced was 0.156 g/L. For ethanol production, the highest was 58.51 g/L. The experimental results also showed that the sugar groups that contains in POME are fructose, glucose, galactose, sucrose and lactose. From this study, it was observed that optimum condition for butanol and ethanol fermentation by Clostridia acetobutylicum at 35°C.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malaysia is the world's largest producer of palm oil. Waste from palm oil production factories has been increasing rapidly and one of the serious problems in the palm oil fruit processing is the managing of the waste generated by the processes. Recently, fermentative energy production from several sources of biomass has been carried out which is Acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) fermentation (Shinto et al., 2008). Due to this, this study is focusing on the utilization of palm oil mill effluent (POME) for ABE fermentation by Clostridium acetobutylicum (NCIMB 13357). The main objective of this study is to develop conversion of POME into useful material which is butanol. Investigations were carried out on the effects of fermentation temperature within 35°C to 45°C and fermentation time within 48 to 72 hours to the butanol production. The experiment were conducted in Schott bottle with 90% concentration of culture medium and 10% v/v of inoculums concentration by using POME and reinforced clostridia medium (RCM) as growth medium. This anaerobic fermentation was done in batch culture. It was observed that the optimum condition for butanol fermentation by C.acetobutylicum is at 40°C through 48 hours which produced the highest yield of butanol (3.1344 g/L). From this study, it showed that the butanol production was decreased as the fermentation temperature and time were increased. The results from this study hence showed that the POME is a viable media for butanol fermentation. For improvement, research on other parameter such as pH of substrate and concentration of substrate that effect on butanol production should be carried out to optimize the production of butanol.

It is economically viable, socially compatible and environmentally friendly. Water harvesting has proven to be a robust solution to overcome or reduce water shortages all over the world. It is important to understand how to apply this practice in a sustainable and effective way to make full use of its potential in a world increasingly threatened by water scarcity. The Handbook of Water Harvesting and Conservation: Basic Concepts and Fundamentals is the most comprehensive, up-to-date and applied handbook on water harvesting and conservation yet published. The book’s 30 chapters -- written by 84 outstanding international experts from approximately 20 selected countries faced by drought -- explore, critique and develop concepts and systems for water harvesting. The editors bring together many perspectives into a synthesis that is both academically based and practical in its potential applications. The Handbook of Water Harvesting and Conservation: Basic Concepts and Fundamentals is an important tool for education, research and technical works in the areas of soil, water and watershed management and is highly useful for drought strategy planning, flood management and developing techniques to adapt to climate change in urban, agricultural, forest and rangeland areas.

Book excerpt: Biomethanization of the Organic Fraction of Municipal Solid Wastes is a comprehensive introduction to both the fundamentals and the more practical aspects of the anaerobic digestion of organic solid wastes, particularly those derived from households, that is, the organic fraction of municipal solid wastes (OFMSW). It can be used as a textbook for specialized courses and also as a guide for practitioners. In the first part, the book covers the relevant aspects of anaerobic digestion (AD) of organic wastes. The fundamentals and kinetic aspects of AD are reviewed with particular emphasis on the aspects related to solid wastes. This introduction is necessary to have a comprehensive view of the AD process and to understand the practical principles as well as the origin of possible problems arising from the management of the process. Chapter 2 emphasizes the role of kinetics in designing the reactor, paying special attention to existing models, particularly the dynamic ones. Through this introduction, it is intended to facilitate the technology transfer from laboratory or pilot plant experiences to full-scale process, in order to implement improvements in current digesters. Laboratory methods are described for the analysis and optimization of reactor performance, such as methanogenic activity tests or experimental evaluation of the biodegradation kinetics of solid organic waste. The different reaction patterns applied to industrial reactors are outlined. Industrial reactors are classified in accordance with the system they use, pointing out advantages and limitations. Co-digestion, enabling the co-treatment of organic wastes of different origin in a more economically feasible way, is described in detail. Examples of co-digestion are given, with OFMSW as a base-substrate. Finally, full-scale co-digestion plants are discussed. Various types (mechanical, biological, physico-chemical) of pre-treatment to increase the biodegradability, and thus the yields of the process, are reviewed in detail. The use of the fermentation products of anaerobic digesters for biological nutrient removal processes in wastewater treatment plants is described. This constitutes an example of integrated waste management, a field in which both economic and technical advances can be achieved. Balances are given to justify the approach, and a full-scale case study is presented. The important topic of economics and the ecological advantages of the process are emphasized. The use of compost, the integration with composting technology, and advantages over other technologies are detailed in the framework of an environmental impact assessment of biowaste treatment. Finally, the anaerobic digestion of MSW in landfills is reviewed in detail, with emphasis on landfill process enhancement and strategies for its application.

Book excerpt: This book introduces the 3R concept applied to wastewater treatment and resource recovery under a double perspective. Firstly, it deals with innovative technologies leading to: Reducing energy requirements, space and impacts; Reusing water and sludge of sufficient quality; and Recovering resources such as energy, nutrients, metals and chemicals, including biopolymers. Besides targeting effective C,N&P removal, other issues such as organic micropollutants, gases and odours emissions are considered. Most of the technologies analysed have been tested at pilot- or at full-scale. Tools and methods for their Economic, Environmental, Legal and Social impact assessment are described. The 3R concept is also applied to Innovative Processes design, considering different levels of innovation: Retrofitting, where novel units are included in more conventional processes; Re-Thinking, which implies a substantial flowsheet modification; and Re-Imagining, with completely new conceptions. Tools are presented for Modelling, Optimising and Selecting the most suitable plant layout for each particular scenario from a holistic technical, economic and environmental point of view.
