This book was released on 1972 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The investigation was made on a 1/18-scale model of a twin-engine light airplane. Static longitudinal, lateral, and directional characteristics were obtained at 0 deg and plus or minus 5 deg sideslip at a Mach number of about 0.2. The angle of attack varied from about 20 deg at a Reynolds number of 0.39 times one million to 13 deg at a Reynolds number of 3.7 times one million, based on the reference chord. The effect of fixed transition, vertical and horizontal tails, and nacelle fillets was studied.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the education of aeronautical engineers at Delft University of Technology started in 1940 under tae inspiring leadership of Professor H.J. van der Maas, much emphasis has been placed on the design of aircraft as part of the student's curriculum. Not only is aircraft design an optional subject for thesis work, but every aeronautical student has to carry out a preliminary airplane design in the course of his study. The main purpose of this preliminary design work is to enable the student to synthesize the knowledge ob tained separately in courses on aerodynamics, aircraft performances, stability and con trol, aircraft structures, etc. The student's exercises in preliminary design have been directed through the years by a number of staff members of the Department of Aerospace Engineering in Delft. The author of this book, Mr. E. Torenbeek, has made a large contribution to this part of the study programme for many years. Not only has he acquired vast experience in teaching airplane design at university level, but he has also been deeply involved in design-oriented re search, e.g. developing rational design methods and systematizing design information. I am very pleased that this wealth of experience, methods and data is now presented in this book.

The angle of attack was varied from minus 4 degrees to plus 20 degrees. The sideslip range was plus or minus 8 degrees. Thrust coefficients were 0, 0.20, and 0.44. Tests were made with various nacelle configurations, modes of propeller rotation, orientation of the thrust axis, and airfoil section at Reynolds numbers of 2.96 times one million amd 2.05 times one million.

This book was released on 1945 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: An investigation of a model of a large four-engine bomber was conducted in the Langley 19-foot pressure tunnel to determine the effects of several wing and nacelle modification on drag characteristics and air-flow characteristics at the tail. Leading-edge gloves, trailing-edge extensions, and modified nacelle afterbodies were tested individually and in combination. The effects of the various modifications were determined by force tests, tuft observations, and turbulence surveys in the region of the tail. Tests were made with fixed and natural transition on the wing and with propellers operating and propellers off. Most of the tests were conducted at a Reynolds number of approximately 2.6 x 106. The results indicated that application of certain of the modifications provided worth-while improvements in the characteristics of the model. The flow over the wing and flaps was improved, the drag was reduced, and the turbulence in the region of the tail was reduced.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With an ever-increasing number of liability lawsuits, are corporations electing to play it safe rather than risk the uncertainties accompanying innovation? In The Liability Maze experts address the issues surrounding safety and innovation and present the most detailed and comprehensive study to date on the actual impact of U.S. liability law. In recent decades it has been widely assumed that liability laws promote safety by significantly raising the price companies must pay for negligence, product defects and accidents. More recently, others have suggested that the broad and unpredictable sweep of these laws actually deters innovation. The risks of lawsuits are so great that corporations are showing more caution in product innovation than ever before. The contributors focus on five sectors of the economy where the liability system appears to have had the greatest effects, positive or negative: the private aircraft, automobile, chemical, and pharmaceutical industries, and the medical profession. They suggest that in many sectors liability law has hampered innovation. In others it has stimulated safety improvements, although perhaps not so much as vigilant safety regulations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this study was to determine the weaknesses of present flight training syllabi, the methods of training used, and the flight instruction presently provided in the stall/spin area; conceive an experimental stall/spin increment to an established flight and ground training syllabus; and conduct flight and ground test evaluations of this syllabus change and the flight instruction techniques required. Results indicate that additional ground training in the subject of stalls and spins, additional flight training on stall awareness, and/or intentional spin training would all have a positive influence toward reducing inadvertent stalls and spins.
