Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Residual stress present in coupons used for fracture testing will influence the experimental determination of fracture toughness. Triaxial residual stress (e.g., due to welding) can alter both the driving force for fracture and the crack-tip constraint at a specified load, so that the apparent toughness of a coupon depends on the residual stress present. In this paper, we employ a micromechanical failure theory (the RKR model) to predict brittle fracture loads for three-point bend samples with and without triaxial residual stress. Finite element modeling is used in the study to introduce an idealized welding residual stress field, to simulate the crushing of the coupon by circular platens (referred to as homogenization or local compression), and to simulate three-point bend testing. Results show that the residual stress markedly changes load at fracture, which would be used to compute apparent fracture toughness. Furthermore, the method of superposition commonly used is not able to accurately predict this effect.

Book excerpt: "Eleven peer-reviewed papers, written by experts in their field, provide an understanding of residual stresses, fatigue crack growth, fatigue lifetime predictions, and their effect on structural integrity. Residual stresses can be present due to processing and manufacturing of materials and structures, so it is imperative to understand how and why they can influence the test data that we used in structural design methodologies. Residual stresses may also be intentionally engineered into structures in attempts to improve fatigue life, and it is equally important that designers understand how to account for these potential effects on fatigue life."--Publisher's website.

Book excerpt: This paper studies the method for estimating the residual stress effects on brittle fracture of structural steel based on the Weibull stress criterion. First, brittle fracture tests were conducted for four-point bend notched specimens with and without compressive preloading. It is shown that the compressive preloading apparently decreases the critical crack tip opening displacement (CTOD). The critical CTOD of the preloaded specimen can be predicted from monotonically loaded test results based on the Weibull stress criterion. It has been found that the Weibull stress is an effective fracture parameter for brittle fracture initiation under tensile residual stress. Second, using wide plate specimens with and without welding residual stress subjected to uniform tension and three-point bend fracture toughness specimens, welding residual stresses effect on the brittle fracture strength is investigated. Experiments show that the critical CTOD of wide plate with welding residual stress is significantly smaller than that without residual stress. Constraint loss effect on CTOD of wide plate can be assessed by the equivalent CTOD ratio ?. ? is defined as ?=?3PB/?WP, where ?3PB and ?WP are CTODs of the standard fracture toughness specimen and wide plate, respectively, at the same level of the Weibull stress. Fracture assessment result using ? is shown within the context of failure assessment diagram. An excessive conservatism observed in the conventional procedure (?=1) is reasonably reduced by applying the equivalent CTOD ratio ?.

Book excerpt: Effects of residual stresses induced in a three-point bend CTOD specimen on brittle fracture initiation are studied on the basis of the Local Approach. Compressive residual stresses are produced near the crack tip by preloading at room temperature. The material used is a 780 MPa class high-strength steel. Fracture tests are conducted at low temperatures (-75 and -40°C) after preloading. The preloading apparently increases the fracture load and critical CTOD levels at the onset of brittle fracture from the reference levels at monotonic loading, which is due to the compressive residual stress field around the crack tip. The present study employs the Weibull stress fracture criterion to evaluate the brittle fracture resistance of the preloaded specimen. The Weibull stress is calculated by a 3D elastic-plastic FE analysis. Under the assumption that the critical Weibull stress at brittle fracture initiation is a material property independent of preloading, the critical CTOD of the preloaded specimens can be predicted from the fracture test results of monotonically loaded specimens.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Supports the use and development of strong, fracture-resistant, and mechanically reliable ceramic materials The Fracture of Brittle Materials thoroughly sets forth the key scientific and engineering concepts underlying the selection of test procedures for fracture toughness, strength determination, and reliability predictions. With this book as their guide, readers can confidently test and analyze a broad range of brittle materials in order to make the best use of existing materials as well as to support the development of new materials. The authors explain the importance of microstructure in these determinations and describe the use of quantitative fractography in failure analysis. The Fracture of Brittle Materials is relevant to a broad range of ceramic materials (i.e., any inorganic non-metal), including semiconductors, cements and concrete, oxides, carbides, and nitrides. The book covers such topics as: Basic principles of fracture mechanics underlying brittle material tests and analysis procedures Theory and mechanisms of environmentally enhanced crack growth Fracture mechanics tests to determine a material's resistance to fast fracture Test and analysis methods to assess the strength of ceramics Methods to analyze the fracture process based on quantitative measurements of the fracture surface Effect of a material's microstructure Methods for predicting the lifetime of brittle components under stress Throughout the book, figures and illustrations help readers understand key concepts and methods. Replete with real-world examples, this text enables engineers and materials and ceramics scientists to select and implement the optimal testing methods for their particular research needs and then accurately analyze the results.

Book excerpt: Fracture: An Advanced Treatise, Volume IV: Engineering Fracture Design presents the development and status of knowledge on sudden, catastrophic failure of structures due to unexpected brittle fracture of component materials. This book provides information pertinent to the engineering fracture design as well as the microscopic and macroscopic fundamentals of fracture. Organized into eight chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the evaluation of fracture tests. This text then presents an analysis of temperature effects on fracture. Other chapters consider the fracture and carrying capacity of long, slender columns and related topics. This book discusses as well the problems in connection with columns, beams, and plates, and experimental evidence to support theories proposed for describing the strength and stiffness of these elements. The final chapter presents an analysis of the problem of brittle fracture in weldments. This book is a valuable resource for engineers, students, and research workers in industrial organizations, education and research institutions, and various government agencies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brittle Fracture in Steel Structures emphasizes the prevention of brittle fracture in structures fabricated from mild and low alloy steel operating at normal ambient temperatures. This book is divided into seven chapters. Chapter 1 provides the historical background and summarizes numerous case histories of brittle fractures. The nature of the phenomenon and factors that influence brittle fracture, including various methods of testing to determine the notch ductilities of different steels are described in Chapters 2 to 4. The fifth chapter elaborates the design considerations affecting the choice of steel for structural applications. Chapter 6 reviews the main methods for assessing the degree of notch ductility needed for different applications, while Chapter 7 deliberates practical procedures, recommended by the Navy Department Advisory Committee on Structural Steels, for assessing the suitability of different steels for particular applications. This publication is beneficial to metallurgists and welders intending to acquire knowledge of mild steel structures fabricated by welding from rolled steel plates and sections.
