A large-scale study was conducted on multiple commercial swine farms in Southern Ontario to assess the influence of nursery diet complexity on growth performance from weaning to a targeted market weight, carcass traits at time of processing and a serum health biomarker (i.e. haptoglobin). Two dietary treatments were applied during the nursery period, one treatment was high complexity (HC) nursery diets and the second treatment was low complexity (LC) nursery diets. Overall, feeding LC nursery diets did not influence pig growth performance, or serum haptoglobin concentrations. Carcass quality traits and carcass value was also not influenced by nursery diet complexity. Reducing nursery diet complexity may be a feasible alternative to help reduce the cost of pork production.

Book excerpt: In 11 experiments, 7,325 pigs were used to determine the effects of: 1) diet type and form on finishing pig growth performance and carcass fat iodine value (IV); 2) pellet quality and feeder adjustment on pig growth performance; 3) corn particle size and diet form on finishing pig growth performance and carcass characteristics; and 4) dietary acidification, diet complexity, and feed-grade antibiotics on nursery pig growth performance. Feeding diets with wheat middlings and dried distillers grains with solubles all the way until marketing decreased G:F and carcass yield, and worsened carcass fat IV. Withdrawing these ingredients 17 d prior to market restored carcass yield, but resulted in small improvements in IV. Pelleting diets improved growth performance; however, a novel finding is that pelleting diets fed to finishing pigs increased belly fat IV. Feeding nursery pigs from a wide feeder gap may improve ADG and ADFI, with no negative effects on G:F. For finishing pigs, reducing feeder gap reduced feed disappearance and improved G:F. In all experiments, feeding pelleted diets improved G:F, but the greatest improvements occurred when the percentage of fines was minimized. Grinding corn finer than 650 microns decreased ADFI and improved G:F for finishing pigs fed meal diets, but not for pigs fed pelleted diets. Pelleting diets improved ADG and G:F, but the greatest magnitude of G:F improvement to pellets occurred when pigs were fed diets containing the largest particle size corn. Thus, grinding corn finer than 650 microns improved feed efficiency for finishing pigs fed meal diets, but provided no additional benefit for pigs fed pelleted diets. When dietary supplementation of benzoic acid was evaluated, added benzoic acid in nursery pig diets did not influence growth performance in university conditions, whereas feeding complex diets or antimicrobials improved growth. In the commercial setting, acidifiers improved growth in one experiment but not the other. The varying response to acidifiers is likely influenced by health status, age, or starting weight of pigs.

Pigs were followed until final market weight of 124kg was attained to assess effects of compensatory growth on carcass and meat quality. Short term lysine restriction at weaning reduced growth performance (gains, feed efficiency) and body protein mass while increasing body lipid mass. However, when fed a diet that was no longer limiting in lysine, pigs were capable of achieving compensatory growth with no effects on carcass or meat quality. Short term nutrient restriction may be an effective approach to reduce diet costs without jeopardizing performance and carcass and meat quality.

Experiments 1-4 evaluated dietary wheat middlings at levels of up to 20% of the diet for 7 to 23 kg pigs. Increasing dietary midds decreased growth performance but mainly when 10% of more was added. Balancing diets containing 10 or 20% midds on a NE basis had no significant effects on performance compared with not adjusting for NE of the diet. In Exp. 5, the effects of decreasing particle size, complete diet grinding, and diet form were evaluated on finishing pig growth performance, and carcass characteristics. Diet form x portion ground interactions existed for ADG, ADFI, and HCW as grinding the complete diet in meal form was detrimental to performance but advantageous to performance when diets were fed in pelleted form. Reducing the particle size of corn improved G:F and caloric efficiencies. Pelleting the diet improved ADG, G:F, caloric efficiencies, HCW, and loin depth. Experiment 6 evaluated varying particle sizes, diet form, and complete diet grinding on nursery pig growth performance. Pigs fed pelleted diets had improved ADG, G:F, and caloric efficiencies. Fine grinding corn or the complete diet with high by-products diet decreased ADG, ADFI, G:F, and final BW. Experiment 7 evaluated varying particle sizes of corn and DDGS, diet form, and complete diet grinding on nursery pig growth performance. Pigs fed finely ground corn had decreased ADFI when the diet was fed in pellet form and more severe reductions in ADFI when diets were fed in meal form resulting in a diet form x corn particle size interaction. Pigs fed pelleted diets had decreased ADG, ADFI, G:F and final BW, but improved caloric efficiencies. Finely grinding corn decreased ADG, and feeding DDGS decreased ADG, ADFI, and NE caloric efficiency.

Book excerpt: The objective of the work presented in this dissertation was to determine the effects of birth weight and weaning weight on pig growth performance, fat and lean tissue accretion rates, and carcass characteristics and composition. Study 1 was a retrospective analysis of data collected in two studies conducted under commercial conditions. Individual pig body weights were collected at birth, weaning, and 8 and 20 weeks post-weaning, and carcass data was also collected on individual pigs. The pigs were sorted by birth weight, and assigned to quartiles on the basis of birth body weight. The data were then analyzed as a completely randomized design with four treatments (birth weight quartiles). Study 2 evaluated the growth performance, fat and lean tissue accretion rates, carcass characteristics and composition, and meat quality of barrows with Heavy, Medium, or Light birth weights housed in individual pens from 3 weeks post-weaning to an end body weight of 145 kg. This study was conducted as a randomized complete block design with three treatments (Heavy, Medium, and Light birth weight) and the blocking factor was day of weaning. Study 3 was conducted as a randomized complete block design with a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments [Birth weight (Heavy vs Light) and Weaning weight (Heavy vs Light), and evaluated the same parameters as Study 2. Heavy weaning weight pigs were reared in litters of 6 pigs during lactation and Light weaning weight pigs were reared in litters of 12 during lactation. The results of these studies indicate that light birth weight pigs grow slower during the wean-to-market period compared to heavy birth weight pigs. The results of Studies 1 and 2 also indicated there is a threshold level of birth weight above which there is no improvement in overall average daily gain. This was evidenced by a much larger difference in growth rate between quartiles 1 and 2 than between the other quartiles in Study 1, and a lack of a difference in growth rate between medium and heavy birth weight pigs in Study 2. There was no difference observed in feed intake among the birth weight classifications in either Study 2 or Study 3 and the light birth weight pigs had less percentage lean of the carcass compared to the heavier birth weight pigs in both studies. Additionally, weaning weight had no effect on growth performance or carcass characteristics. The results of these studies indicate that light birth weight pigs grow slower than heavy birth weight pigs and the reduction in growth rate is due to less potential for lean tissue accretion.

Part I was carried out from 3 wk post-weaning to 110 ± 2.0 kg BW as a RCBD with 1 treatment: Birth weight [Heavy, Medium, Light (average 1.5, 1.2, 0.9 kg, respectively)]. Pigs from the 3 birth weight classifications were selected from within the same birth litter. Part II was carried out from 110 ± 2.0 to 134 ± 3.2 kg BW as a RCBD using a 3 ©7 2 factorial arrangement of treatments: 1) Birth weight (Heavy, Medium, Light), and 2) dietary Paylean inclusion level (0 and 5 ppm). Pigs were housed in individual pens and were weighed at birth, weaning, and every two weeks thereafter in Part I and weekly during Part II. All feed additions and feed left in the feeder at the time of pig weighing were recorded and used in the calculation of average daily feed intake and gain:feed ratio. At 134 kg BW, pigs were shipped to the University of Illinois Meat Science Laboratory and harvested according to standard procedures. Standard carcass and meat quality measurements (subjective color, firmness, and marbling, Minolta color, and drip loss) were taken ~24 hr post-mortem, and Warner-Bratzler shear force was measured on cooked Longissimus muscle chops. The right side of each carcass was separated into skin, bone, and soft tissue, each tissue was weighed, and the soft tissue was ground. In Part I, light birth weight pigs had lower (P 0.05) ADG (0.98 vs. 1.02 vs. 1.05, respectively; SEM 0.016 kg), but similar (P 0.05) ADFI and G:F as medium and heavy birth weight pigs. In Part II, there were no treatment interactions for growth traits; the effects of birth weight on growth performance were similar to Part I. Weaning has nutritional, environmental, social, and physiological impacts on the nursery pig. Nutrition is modified to accommodate changing needs of the nursery pig. The nursery pig diet is developed by adding highly digestible animal proteins to the standard corn-soybean meal swine diet. Development of the nursery diet improves pig performance but animal-based proteins can be expensive and do not address undigestible components of the plant-based ingredients. Addition of lower-cost animal proteins, addition of enzymes, and addition of acidifiers have the capability to improve nutrient utilization of corn-soybean meal diets by nursery pigs at a lower cost. This thesis consists of four chapters. Chapter one consists of a literature review examining nursery pig management and nutrition in the United States swine industry. Chapter two examines the effectiveness of independent addition of spray-dried blood plasma or spray-dried egg to improve nursery pig growth performance when added to the standard nursery diet. Chapter three examines the effectiveness of the independent and joint addition of alpha-galactosidase and citric acid to improve nursery pig growth performance when added to a corn-soybean meal diet. Chapter four summarizes the findings of Chapter two and three and the implications of these findings for the swine industry.

The study utilized Danbred N.A. (Columbus, NE) barrows and gilts (n=2,467) from a commercial maternal line multiplication herd. Litters were randomly assigned at birth to either a 15 d (pigs weaned at 14, 15, and 16 d of age) or a 20 d (pigs weaned at 19, 20, and 21 d of age) average weaning age group. Increasing birth weight from 0.94 to 2.06 kg improved subsequent growth performance. Collectively, birth weight and weaning weight are important predictors of subsequent nursery growth performance. The research also defined how weaning age affects ADG, ADFI, mortality %, G:F, and feed cost/kg gain in the nursery phase of production. Pigs weaned at 20 d had greater ADG, increased ADFI, fewer pigs removed from the test, similar G:F ratios, and lower feed cost/kg gain when compared to pigs weaned at 15 d. Pigs in the 20 d weaning age group were also heavier at the end of the 42 d nursery phase of production when compared to pigs weaned in the 15 d group. Based on the differences seen in pigs weaned at 20 d and 15 d, weaning pigs at 20 d may prove advantageous in commercial operations because of the improvements in nursery growth performance. The research also analyzed the effect of lactation length on wean-to-estrus interval (WSI), wean-to-conception interval (WCI), and subsequent litter size in sows weaned at two different average weaning ages. No significant lactation length treatment differences were observed for WSI, WCI, or subsequent litter size. This study indicates that producers should be able to choose weaning ages in the range of 15 to 20 d without any negative impacts on sow reproductive performance. Thus, when producers are making weaning age decisions they must consider what the best decision is for the entire production system.

Overall, a source x level interaction for ADG, G:F and final BW was observed as increasing fish meal source 1 improved ADG and G:F; however, pigs fed fish meal source 2 had improved ADG and G:F at 3%, but decreased at 6%. Pigs fed fish meal source 3 had no further improvements in ADG and G:F beyond the 3% inclusion. No evidence for differences were detected between the dietary treatments for ADFI. Experiment 5 evaluated the effects of feeding fish solubles on nursery pig performance. Pigs fed diets with fish meal had increased ADG and ADFI compared to pigs fed the control diet. There was no evidence for differences in growth performance as fish solubles increased. Experiment 6 and 7 investigated the effects of enzymatically-treated soybean meal (ESBM) on nursery pig performance. Results indicated that nursery pigs fed diets with greater than 9% of ESBM resulted in decreased ADFI and final BW. Experiment 8 evaluated the effects of dietary electrolyte balance (dEB) on nursery pig performance. Increasing dEB in diets from weaning to 21-d after weaning resulted in an increase in ADG and BW, which was the result of a marginally significant improvement in ADFI and G:F. Finally, an experiment was conducted to determine the optimal strategy for collecting and submitting samples that adequately describe the nutrient levels in diets collected from a commercial swine facility. Sampling feeders with a probe resulted in less variability on an individual basis, but seemed to get washed out when individual samples were pooled to form a composite sample.

Book excerpt: Studies were conducted to evaluate the effects of corn byproducts high-protein died distillers grain (HP-DDG), and dried distillers grain with solubles (DDGS), and branched chain amino acids (BCAA) on the growth performance and meat quality of pigs. The first study evaluated the combined effect of dietary level of DDGS and HP-DDG on the growth performance of wean-finish pigs and carcass and pork quality characteristics. This study demonstrated that DDGS can be included at up to 30% in diets (without HP-DDG) without compromising growth performance of wean-to-finish pigs. However, growth performance was increasingly compromised at higher inclusion levels of both co-products and belly firmness was negatively affected by increasing levels of both DDGS and HP-DDG. A second experiment was designed to define the minimum CP level and whether non-essential amino acids become limiting in low crude protein diets for late finishing pigs. The results of this study demonstrated that late finishing pigs can be fed diets with 9.76% crude protein level supplemented with 0.32 % L-Lys HCL and other essential amino acids without affecting growth rate and that non-essential amino acids were not limiting in the low crude protein diets evaluated. A third study was designed to recreate the negative effects on growth performance of feeding diets with 30% HP-DDG inclusion level and to test if the negative effect of feeding high HP-DDG levels on growth performance can be reproduced by adding excess branched chain amino acids (leucine, isoleucine, and valine) to standard corn-soybean meal based diet. The results show that the reduction in the growth rates of growing pigs fed diets with 30% HP-DDG inclusion levels may be due to the dietary excesses of leucine present in diets with HP-DDG at 30% inclusion levels. The same effect was not present in finishing pigs. In general, growth performance and belly quality are compromised at higher inclusion levels of both HP-DDG and DDGS. The results of the last studies indicate that leucine level may play an important role on the reduction of the growth performance of pigs fed 30% HP-DDG inclusion levels.
