Book excerpt: This thesis is to investigate the effect of milling time to the mechanical and physical properties Aluminum metal matrix composite reinforced with alumina. The objective of this thesis is to study the effect of milling time on mechanical and physical properties of powder materials. This thesis also to characterize the hardness and microstructure of Aluminum MMC produced by reinforced aluminum with alumina using powder metallurgy process. The thesis describes the powder metallurgy process to produce Al MMC reinforce with Al2O3. The powder metallurgy process consist of three main process which is milling process, compaction process and sintering. The milling process has big influence on the characteristic of powder materials, due to particle deformation followed by welding and fracturing particles. Mechanical milling is a process involving repeated deformation, welding and fracture. The mechanically milled show finer and better distribution of reinforcement particle what lead to better mechanical properties of obtained product. The results are increasing the milling time significant to improve the mechanical and physical properties of the Aluminum metal matrix composite produced.

Book excerpt: This research focused on the study of the influence of different sintering temperature of physical and mechanical behaviour of Aluminum Metal Matrix Composites (Al MMC) reinforced with alumina (Al2O3). Al MMC reinforced with rigid ceramic particulates have become increasingly important for structural applications in aerospace, automotive and other transport industries, because of their high specific strength and modulus, good wear resistance as well as ease of processing. In this project, the influence of sintering temperature was investigated on its hardness and microstructure. These Al MMCs have been traditionally fabricated by powder metallurgy (PM) method. There are three main steps in PM which are blending, compacting and sintering. The experiments were performed on 10% weight percentage of Al2O3 on different sintering temperature. In this study, five specimens of the composite were sintered with different temperature which are 400 0C, 450 0C, 500 0C, 550 0C, and 600 0C. Then, the influence of different sintering temperature on physical and mechanical behavior of the composite was studied. The specimens were investigated on their hardness and microstructure. The hardness of the composites was examined using Vickers Hardness Test and Image Analyzer was used to study the microstructure of the composite. The result shows that the hardness of the composite decreased with the increasing of sintering temperature. Then from the microstructure observation, the grains of alumina increased when the sintering temperature increased. Furthermore, the result of this study also was compared with the other published work, and it shows the correlation each other.

This book was released on 2008 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silicon carbide particle reinforced aluminum matrix composites have been developed over past few decades, owing to their excellent properties like light weight, high elastic modulus and wear resistance. Thus, the silicon carbide particle reinforced aluminum matrix composites are expected to have many applications in aerospace, aircraft, automobile and electronic industries. In this study, aluminum metal matrix composites containing several weight percentages of reinforcement particles were prepared by using powder metallurgy method. The main steps in powder metallurgy are blending, compacting and sintering. The experiments were performed on different composition of silicon carbide powder in the composite. The study presents the results of experimental investigation on mechanical behavior of silicon carbide particle reinforced aluminum matrix. The influence of reinforced ratio of 0, 5, 10 and 15 weight percentage of silicon carbide particles on mechanical behavior was examined. The effect of different weight percentage of silicon carbide in composite on hardness and microstructure was studied. Digital image analyzer was used to characterize the composites. The effect of weight percentage of silicon carbide on hardness of composites was investigated by using Vickers hardness Test. It was observed that the distribution of silicon carbide particles was uniform. The hardness of the composites increased with increasing reinforcement element addition in it. In addition, and for the purpose of verification of the present theory, other published work was also compared and found to be in very good correlation with the predicted result.

This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The applications of aluminum powder metallurgy (PM) alloys require precise control of final mechanical properties. The final properties of an alloy are dictated by the processing steps performed during production. The goal of this research was to analyze the effects process variables have on the properties of Al-2.3Cu-1.5Mg-0.5Sn. Specifically, the impact of heat treatment and sizing on the tensile and fatigue properties was investigated. Three variations in heat treatment were explored, each in the sized and not-sized condition: naturally aged (T1/T2) , artificially aged (T6/T8), and solutionized-naturally aged (T4/T3). Uniaxial tensile testing was done to determine yield strength and ductility. 3-point bend fatigue using the staircase method was used to determine fatigue strength. For all heat treatments, sizing increased yield strength, but decreased ductility and fatigue strength. The T8 heat treatment resulted in the highest yield strength (325 MPa), but also the lowest fatigue strength (109 MPa). The T4 heat treatment resulted in the highest ductility (14%). Sizing decreased fatigue strength by up to 31% in the artificially aged samples. Delay time between sintering and sizing was investigated and no significant impact was seen in mechanical properties by increasing delay time. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was used to determine if sizing impacted precipitate development. It was determined that the precipitation sequence of the S-type (Al2CuMg) was influenced by sizing. Through the DSC data it was inferred that there was a preferential tendency for S1-type precipitates to form in sized samples, supressing full aging to S2-type. This would have altered the mechanical performance of the alloy.

Book excerpt: Although sintering is an essential process in the manufacture ofceramics and certain metals, as well as several other industrialoperations, until now, no single book has treated both thebackground theory and the practical application of this complex andoften delicate procedure. In Sintering Theory and Practice, leadingresearcher and materials engineer Randall M. German presents acomprehensive treatment of this subject that will be of great useto manufacturers and scientists alike. This practical guide to sintering considers the fact that while thebonding process improves strength and other engineering propertiesof the compacted material, inappropriate methods of control maylead to cracking, distortion, and other defects. It provides aworking knowledge of sintering, and shows how to avoid problemswhile accounting for variables such as particle size, maximumtemperature, time at that temperature, and other problems that maycause changes in processing. The book describes the fundamental atomic events that govern thetransformation from particles to solid, covers all forms of thesintering process, and provides a summary of many actual productioncycles. Building from the ground up, it begins with definitions andprogresses to measurement techniques, easing the transition, especially for students, into advanced topics such as single-phasesolid-state sintering, microstructure changes, the complications ofmixed particles, and pressure-assisted sintering. German draws onsome six thousand references to provide a coherent and lucidtreatment of the subject, making scientific principles andpractical applications accessible to both students andprofessionals. In the process, he also points out and avoids thepitfalls found in various competing theories, concepts, andmathematical disputes within the field. A unique opportunity to discover what sintering is all about--bothin theory and in practice What is sintering? Book excerpt: Metal matrix composites are making tangible inroads into the "real" world of engineering. They are used in engineering components such as brake rotors, aircraft parts, combustion engines, and heat sinks for electronic systems. Yet, outside a relatively limited circle of specialists, these materials are mostly unknown. Designers do not as a rule think of using these materials, in part because access to information is difficult as these materials have not really entered engineering handbooks. Metal Matrix Composites in Industry is thus useful to engineers who wish to gain introductory knowledge of these materials and who want to know where "to find" them. Additionally, it provides researchers and academics with a survey of current industrial activity in this area of technology.
