Book excerpt: With the adoption of the new mechanistic-empirical pavement design method and the employment of axle load spectra, the question of evaluating the pavement damage resulting from different axle and truck configurations has become more relevant. In particular, the state of Michigan is unique in permitting several heavy truck axle configurations that are composed of up to 11 axles, sometimes with as many as 8 axles within one axle group. Thus, there is a need to identify the relative pavement damage resulting from these multiple axle trucks. The study looked at both flexible and rigid pavement systems, and comprised of three main components: (1) inservice pavement performance data; (2) laboratory testing under multiple axles, and (3) mechanistic-empirical analyses. The results from in-service pavement performance data indicated that multiple axle groups appear to cause less damage in fatigue per load carried for both pavement types, whereas they cause more damage in rutting of flexible pavements and roughness for rigid pavements. Laboratory testing of asphalt concrete confirmed that multiple axles cause less fatigue damage per load carried, and that rutting is nearly proportional to the number of axles within an axle group. Results from flexural concrete beam fatigue testing showed significant variability; multiple linear regression analysis (independent variables: stress ratio, stress impulse and initial modulus of elasticity) indicated, on average, similar findings to asphalt concrete fatigue for a given stress ratio; however, mechanistic analysis showed that multiple axles cause considerable stress reduction leading to significantly lower fatigue damage. The mechanistic analysis also showed that multiple axles cause more faulting in rigid pavements. Mechanistic analyses of flexible pavements confirmed that multiple axles cause less fatigue damage per load carried, and rutting damage that is nearly proportional to the number of axles within an axle group. However, the mechanistic-empirical results suggest that the AASHTO Load Equivalency Factors (LEF) for large axle groups may be unconservative. Finally, Full scale slab testing to study joint/crack deterioration in plain concrete pavements was inconclusive.

Book excerpt: Abstract : This study aimed to investigate the use of wide base tires (WBT) in Michigan to quantify the effect of different percentages of WBT loads on flexible and rigid pavements. Surveys and field investigations were conducted to quantify the WBT usage in Michigan. The JULEA (for flexible pavements) and Illislab (for JPCP) software programs were used to calculate the mechanical response between dual tire (DT) and WBT loads, while the Mechanical-Empirical (ME) pavement design process was utilized for damage accumulation and pavement distress analysis. Investigation results rationalized the assumption of WBT proportion for design purposes as 10% currently and up to 25% in the future for Michigan with the majority of axles load still employing DT assemblies. WBT loads were found to increase pavement distress mechanistically using this process, with fatigue cracking for flexible pavement and faulting for JPCP most critical. Thicker asphalt concrete (AC) layers were beneficial in reducing WBT impact on fatigue cracking, while rutting was much less impacted by the thickness of the AC layer under WBT using the ME design process. Thicker concrete slabs helped reduce WBT impacts on both transverse cracking and faulting for JPCP. It was also found that WBT loads did not affect the international roughness index (IRI) significantly for both flexible and JPCP using a process adapted from the Pavement ME analysis. Based on analysis results, the WBT impact on pavement structures with 5-12" AC layers or 6-13" PCC slabs were quantified for up to 25% WBTs, with the respective adjusted Pavement ME and AASHTO 93 design threshold and recommendation for implementation.

They provide a method to convert the effects of mixed traffic to a standard loading condition. Equivalent loadings for most pavement design and evaluation procedures are currently predicted using the AASHTO method of equivalency factors. This study was undertaken to evaluate various types of primary pavement response derived load equivalency factors. These use pavement response measurements such as strain and deflection to estimate the equivalent damaging effect of any axle loading condition. These types of factors are also expressed in terms of a relative number of equivalent standard axle loads. A number of primary response equivalency factor methods were evaluated and several selected for further study. Deflection and strain pavement response measurements were evaluated over an experimental factorial of axle type, axle load, tire pressure, speed, pavement thickness, and pavement temperature. Primary response load equivalencies were calculated using the selected methods and a number of statistical comparisons were made.
