For seismic loading, ignoring the composite action is not always on the safe side, since the interaction between the panel and the frame under lateral loads changes the stiffness and the dynamic characteristics of the structure, and hence, its response to seismic loads. To study the influence of brick masonry infill panels on seismic performance of reinforced concrete (RC) frames, equivalent diagonal strut is used to model the stiffness effect of the masonry panels. The response of a bare frame is compared with the full and partial infill with centrally located opening. In general, the shear forces in the columns are decreased by the presence of infill panels. When subjected to lateral loading, the frame with full infill has better response whereas; the response of infill with very large opening is comparable with bare frames.

After many centuries of traditional use and decades of allowable stress design, clear concepts for limit state verification of masonry buildings under earthquake loading have recently been introduced in codes of practice.Although this book is not a review of the state-of-the-art of masonry structures in earthquake zones, an attempt has been made to balance the discussion on recent code requirements, state-of-the-art methods of earthquake-resistant design and the author's research work, in order to render the book useful for a broader application in design practice. An attempt has also been made to present, in a condensed but easy to understand way, all the information needed for earthquake-resistant design of masonry buildings constructed using traditional systems. The basic concepts of limit state verification are presented and equations for seismic resistance verification of masonry walls of all types of construction, (unreinforced, confined and reinforced) as well as masonry-infilled reinforced concrete frames, are addressed. A method for seismic resistance verification, compatible with recent code requirements, is also discussed. In all cases, experimental results are used to explain the proposed methods and equations.An important part of this book is dedicated to the discussion of the problems of repair, retrofit and rehabilitation of existing masonry buildings, including historical structures in urban centres. Methods of strengthening masonry walls as well as improving the structural integrity of existing buildings are described in detail. Wherever possible, experimental evidence regarding the effectiveness of the proposed strengthening methods is given.

Book excerpt: Reinforced concrete (RC) structures with infill walls are the most common building types in earthquake-prone regions of Turkey. Due to the complications in modeling the infill wall - frame interaction, they are generally neglected in structural design. However, presence of the infill walls has been proved to affect stiffness, strength and behavior of the structures significantly. Effects of infill walls may be either beneficial or detrimental under seismic demands. Infill walls typically increase the stiffness and strength of the structures. This situation may be advantageous for nonductile buildings up to a certain limit. However, brittle nature and variety of failure modes of infill walls may cause unforeseen and irreversible damages. Particularly, softstory mechanisms may occur due to drift concentrations at lower stories. An organized stiffness distribution along the height of the structure may help mitigating these negative effects. The main purpose of the study is to investigate the effects of stiffness variations in infill walls to the behavior of the frames. In order to achieve the purpose, an analytical software that supports an infill model, was selected. The software is calibrated and verified by simulating a series of experiments. Afterwards, a planar, fivestory, five-bay reinforced concrete frame was designed with common deficiencies observed in residential buildings in Turkey. The performance of the bare frame (BF) was determined using pushover analysis. Then, two types of infilled frames were obtained by introducing infill walls into two bays. The infill walls of the first infilled frame (IF-1) had a uniform stiffness and strength distribution along the height of the frame. In the second infilled frame (IF-2), the stiffness and strength of the infill walls had a decreasing profile from the bottom to the top story. By this distribution, drift concentration at the lower stories was aimed to be mitigated. Nonlinear dynamic and pushover analyses were performed on the frames. The results indicated that the organized stiffness distribution of IF-2 mitigated the drift concentrations and improved he seismic performance of the frame.

That word—prestandard—has a special meaning within the ASCE Standards Program in that it signifies the document has been accepted for use as the start of the formal standard development process, however, the document has yet to be fully processed as a voluntary consensus standard. The preparation of this prestandard was originally undertaken with two principal and complementary objectives. The first was to encourage the wider application of the NEHRP Guidelines for the Seismic Rehabilitation of Buildings, FEMA 273, by converting it into mandatory language. Design professionals and building officials thus would have at their disposal a more specific reference document for making buildings more resistant to earthquakes. This volume fully meets this first objective. The second objective was to provide a basis for a nationally recognized, ANSI-approved standard that would further help in disseminating and incorporating the approaches and technology of the prestandard into the mainstream of design and construction practices in the United States. How successfully this volume achieves the second objective will become apparent with the passage of time, as this prestandard goes through the balloting process of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Several additional related efforts were ongoing during the development of this prestandard. A concerted effort was made to gather any new information produced by these endeavors. Topics varied considerably, but typically covered approaches, methodologies, and criteria. Whenever an analysis of the new information disclosed significant advances or improvements in the state-of-the-practice, they were included in this volume. Thus, maintaining FEMA 273 as a living document—a process to which FEMA is strongly committed—is continuing.

In this article, an improved numerical model for the simulation of the behavior of masonry infill walls subjected to earthquake loads is used. The main objective of the study is to investigate the importance of semi-interlocked brick infill in multi-storied buildings it uses masonry panels made of dry stack interlocking masonry units capable of relative sliding in a plane and interlocked to prevent sliding out-of-plane. This masonry panels acting as energy dissipation devices (EDD). An analytical program is based on to evaluate the behavior of different framed masonry panels. It is found that semi-interlocked masonry (SIM) panels have significant energy dissipation capacity due to friction between the masonry units. In this work, the primary focus is given to numerical modeling and nonlinear behavior of brick masonry buildings subjected to lateral loads.

Observations made after the earthquakes revealed that these non-structural elements had beneficial effects on the lateral capacity of the building. In this study, the contribution of the hallow masonry infill walls to the lateral behavior of reinforced concrete buildings was investigated. For this purpose, two different buildings were chosen as case studies. Three and six story symmetric buildings are modeled as bare and infilled frames. The parameters that were investigated are column area, infill wall area, distribution of masonry infill walls throughout the story. To determine the effect of each parameter, global drift ratios are computed and are compared for each case.
