Book excerpt: The past decade has revealed unfavourable trends in e.g. fertility, udder health and locomotion in some major dairy cattle breeds due to a large increase in production and insufficient consideration of functional traits in the breeding goals. Such unfavourable trends in some functional traits increase costs. Additionally, the enlargement of herds leads to less available labour time per individual cow. This asks for cows that are easy to handle. At the same time, society is demanding a higher welfare standard of animals. These contradicting developments have increased the desire for so called more robust animals. Robustness can be defined as 'the ability to maintain homeostasis in commonly accepted and sustainable herds of the near future'; or 'the ability of the cow to function well in the environment she lives in as well as in a wide range of climates and production systems'. This book contains a series of articles (26) dealing with the concept of robustness, including aspects like evolution, genetics, environment, animal health and welfare, and integrity. Besides the major functional traits also the links to energy balance, hot climatic conditions, and the attitude and input of stakeholders towards robustness as part of the breeding program are discussed. This book is the first attempt to summarise the available knowledge concerning this topic in cattle, making this book unique. The contributions are from authors of 16 countries from all over the world. However, the focus is presently on farm animal level, while in future robustness of the whole production system may also require additional attention.

Book excerpt: When trying to solicit authors for this book it became apparent that the causal factors for heterosis at the physiological and biochemical level are today almost as obscure as they were 30 years ago. Though biometrical-genetical analyses point to dispersion of complementary genes - not overdominance - as the major cause of the phenomenon, plant breeders' experience still suggests a cautious, pragmatic approach to the dominance-overdominance controversy in breeding hybrid cultivars. Thus we are faced with a striking discordance between our limited comprehension of the causal factors and mechanism of heter osis on the one hand, and the extensive agricultural practice of utiliza tion of hybrid vigor on the other. Such utilization is the result of the economic value of hybrid combinations displaying superior yields and qualities as well as stability of performance, of benefits derived in breeding programs, and of the enhanced varietal protection of proprietary rights. No comprehensive and critical analysis of the phenomenon of heterosis in economic plants has been published for the last three decades since the now classical book Heterosis, edited by J . W. Gowen (Iowa State College Press, Ames, Iowa, 1952). Exploiting heterosis and breed complementarity can improve economically relevant traits and system efficiency. The objective of the current study was to estimate breed-specific heterosis for the seven largest beef breeds (according to registrations) for birth, weaning and yearling weight. Birth, weaning and yearling weights were recorded for steers, heifers and bulls (n= 6,834) from Cycle VII and advanced generations of the Germ Plasm Evaluation project of the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center. Breeds represented in these data included: Angus, Hereford, Red Angus, Charolais, Gelbvieh, Simmental, Limousin and composite MARC III. Model 1 estimated heterosis assuming different levels within and between biological types (British or Continental). Model 2 estimated breed-specific heterosis (a different level of heterosis for each pair of breeds). Heterosis was assumed proportional to expected breed heterozygosity. Direct heritability estimates (SE) for birth, weaning and yearling weight for Model 1 were 0.42 (0.04), 0.22 (0.03) and 0.39 (0.05), respectively. The direct heritability estimates (SE) for Model 2 were the same as Model 1 except yearling weight heritability was 0.38 (0.05). There were differences in levels of heterosis based on biological type (Model 1) and breed (Model 2). Model 1 results for the British x British (BxB), British x Continental (BxC) and Continental x Continental (CxC) heterosis estimates for birth weight were 0.47 (0.37), 0.75 (0.32) and 0.73 (0.54) kg, respectively. The BxB, BxC and CxC heterosis estimates for weaning weight were 6.43 (1.80), 8.65 (1.54) and 5.86 (2.57) kg, respectively. Yearling weight estimates for BxB, BxC and CxC heterosis were 17.59(3.06), 13.88 (2.63) and 9.12 (4.34) kg, respectively. Breed differences exist and can lead to varying levels of heterosis. Specific estimates of heterosis could be useful when selecting breeds for a crossbreeding system and developing composite populations for various production environments and could be useful in multibreed evaluations as heterosis and breed differences are needed to accurately adjust records to produce genetic predictions..
