Book excerpt: The book presents a collection of 25 original papers (including one review paper) on state-of-the art achievements in the theory and practice of crystals plasticity. The articles cover a wide scope of research on materials behavior subjected to external loadings, starting from atomic-scale simulations, and a new methodological aspect, to experiments on a structure and mechanical response upon a large-scale processing. Thus, a presented contribution of researchers from 18 different countries can be virtually divided into three groups, namely (i) “modelling and simulation”; (ii) “methodological aspects”; and (iii) “experiments on process/structure/properties relationship”. Furthermore, a large variety of materials are investigated including more conventional (steels, copper, titanium, nickel, aluminum, and magnesium alloys) and advanced ones (composites or high entropy alloys). The book should be interested for senior students, researchers and engineers working within discipline of materials science and solid state physics of crystalline materials.

Book excerpt: Shock compression of materials constitutes a complex process involving high strain rates, elevated temperatures and compression of the lattice. Materials properties are greatly affected by temperature, the representative length scale and the strain rate of the deformation. Experimentally, it is difficult to study the dynamic microscopic mechanisms that affect materials properties following high intensity shock loading, but they can be investigated using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Moreover, MD allows a better control over some parameters. We are using MD simulations to study the effect of the strain rate, representative length scale and temperature on the properties of metals during compression. A half-million-atom Cu sample is subjected to strain rates ranging from 107 s−1 to 1012 s−1 at different temperatures ranging from 50K to 1500K. Single crystals as well as polycrystals are investigated. Plasticity mechanisms as well as the evolution of the micro- and macro-yield stress are observed. Our results show that the yield stress increases with increasing strain rate and decreasing temperature. We also show that the strain rate at which the transition between constant and increasing yield stress as a function of the temperature occurs increases with increasing temperature. Calculations at different grain sizes will give an insight into the grain size effect on the plasticity mechanisms and the yield stress.

Book excerpt: Shock recovery experiments on copper have been conducted to investigate the influence of loading rate and stress amplitude on defect storage and post-shock mechanical properties. The shock risetimes varied approximately from one nanosecond for the shock experiments to one microsecond for quasi-isentropic loading experiments. All the experiments had the same peak pressure and pulse duration. Decreasing the strain-rate of loading is shown to increase both the defect storage and post-shock yield strength of copper. The effect of loading rate on post-shock substructure and mechanical response of impacted copper is postulated to be directly related to the amount of dislocation motion before interaction with other dislocations and to the amount of reversible dislocation motion and resultant annihilation during the rarefaction portion of the shock-release cycle. 10 refs., 5 figs.

Book excerpt: The note presents the results of a study of the effects of grain size and environment on the fatigue life of OFHC copper specimens. Tests conducted in alternating torsion on specimens of two different grain size groups showed that an increase in specimen grain size results in a decrease in fatigue life at both high and low strain amplitudes. Similar tests under low and high humidity showed that humidity has a negligible effect on fatigue life for either high or low strain amplitude and for large or small grain size. The effects of elevated temperatures were found to be more complex. At high strain amplitudes the fatigue life decreased continuously as the temperature was increased. At low amplitudes the life dropped as the temperature was raised to 200C., but then remained approximately constant when the temperature was raised further to 350C. An examination of the microstructural changes caused by the fatigue tests revealed damage characteristics of Wood's H range for the tests at high amplitudes and room temperature, with slight variations for the tests at high temperature. Damage characteristics of Wood's S range were found for low amplitude tests at room temperature, with significant grain growth occurring at high temperature.

Book excerpt: An experimental method of determining dynamic flow stress where the stress is homogeneous is developed using a pendulum bar suspension system. A small specimen is mounted on the end of one of the bars and the other bar is impacted on the free and of the specimen. For copper, the dynamic stress is 29% larger than the static stress for a strain rate of about 100/sec (or an increase in strain rate of about 5 orders of magnitude). For various tests, the increase in dynamic stress over the static value varied from 17% to 45%. This variation is comparable with the expected scatter for a typical test (plus or minus 10%) predicted from the uncertainties in measurement. (Author).
