Book excerpt: Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibers reinforced polyethylene (PE) matrix composites are attractive materials for applications such as ballistic protection, satellite radiation shielding, and implants. However, the UHMWPE fibers do not bond well with the PE matrix and a very good interfacial bonding is essential to yield composites with good mechanical properties required for the identified applications. Hence, this study is focused on identifying the best surface treatment to maximize the bonding between a commercially available Dyneema UHMWPE fiber and a high density polyethylene matrix (HDPE). The effect of three fiber surface treatments, plasma treatment, chromic acid treatment, and sol-gel derived organic-inorganic hybrid coatings on interfacial shear strength (IFSS) was studied using a fiber pull out test. The treated fiber surfaces were examined using scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to support the analysis using IFSS. The fiber surface became rough after treatment, which increased with treatment time. The FT-IR and XPS spectra revealed an increase in the atomic ratio of O/C (except for chromic acid treatment) and Si/C after different treatments, when compared to untreated fibers. Oxygen containing groups were found prominently on the surfaces of the plasma and chromic acid treated fiber surfaces suggesting an increase in the surface roughness due to surface etching. The IFSS increased with decrease in embedment length. Among the three treatments, chromic acid treatment for 1 minute resulted in the maximum enhancement of the IFSS over untreated fibers. Treatment in oxygen plasma for 6 minutes and in sol-gel solution for 1 minute resulted in an enhancement slightly lower than that due to chromic acid treatment.

Book excerpt: Three series of torsional dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) tests were conducted on unidirectional carbon/epoxy composites to determine differences in interfacial bond strength. For the first series, composites were manufactured with PAN-based and pitch-based carbon fibers. The fibers had a proprietary surface treatment. For the second series of tests, the composites were made with four grades of pitch-based carbon fibers. Two different methods of surface treatment were used on the fibers. As a comparison, short beam shear tests were conducted on the composites made with fibers which had different surface treatments. The final series of tests were conducted on composite samples made from one grade of pitch-based fibers with four different fiber volume fractions. All samples were made using the same matrix material. Dynamic mechanical analysis was able to clearly differentiate between the fiber/matrix bond strength of pitch-based and PAN-based fibers. The interlaminar shear strength correlated well with the DMA results, indicating that DMA can measure the effectiveness of various surface treatments. The dynamic mechanical loss modulus increased with increasing fiber volume fraction or total surface area.

While there are many reference books available on composite materials, few of them deal specifically with the science and mechanics of the interface of fiber reinforced composites. Further, many recent advances devoted solely to research in composite interfaces have been scattered in a variety of published literature and have yet to be assembled in a readily accessible form. To this end this book is an attempt to bring together recent developments in the field, both from the materials science and mechanics perspective, in a single convenient volume. The central theme of the book is tailoring the interface properties to optimise the mechanical peformance and structural integrity of composites with enhanced strength/stiffness and fracture toughness (or specific fracture resistance). It deals mainly with interfaces in advanced composites made from high performance fibers, such as glass, carbon, aramid, ultra high modulus polyethylene and some inorganic (e.g. B/W, A12O3, SiC) fibers, and matrix materials encompassing polymers, metals/alloys and ceramics. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a custom fiber surface treatment on the fiber/matrix adhesion level of a carbon fiber reinforced, polymer matrix composite material. Single fiber fragmentation tests were performed on specimens produced using EPON 828 resin and AU-4 fibers, AS-4 fibers, and AU-4 fibers that were treated with a custom fiber surface treatment known to lead to direct chemical reaction with the EPON 828 resin. Qualitative inspection of the birefringent stress patterns produced by the custom treated fiber indicate a high level of fiber/matrix adhesion, greater than the adhesion exhibited by either of the two as received fiber types. In addition, the custom treated fibers produced an average fiber fragment length approximately 23% shorter than the AS-4 specimens, indicating a rather significant increase in adhesion level for the custom treated fibers over the commercially treated fibers. Calculated interfacial shear strength values follow the same trend as was seen during the evaluation of the average fragment length values.
