Book excerpt: Religion provides motivation to address ethical issues, therefore, it is important to understand how family businesses, when facing issues with ethical implications, align their religious identities with the goals of both the family and firm. The study explains the multiplicity of family, business, religion, and community logic in the family firm. In particular, we give attention to religious logic and how it interacts with other logic when family firms are considering ethical issues. We proposed a theoretical framework proposing family firm's religious values (FFRV) affect their rule (PBA) and practice-based approaches (PBA) in ethical dealings. This Rule and principle-based approach affect ethical considerations like 1. Bridging, 2. Complying & leveraging, 3. Doing good to compensate for, 4. Infusing, 5. Self-reinforcing. They also affect other outcomes like 1. Bribery, 2. Business Expansion, 3. Discrimination, 4. Philanthropy, 5. Product representation. We also proposed a moderation of Business, Community, Family, and Religion in the effect of FFRV on all ethical and other outcomes. Empirical validity was established by conducting a survey using a close-ended questionnaire. Data was collected from 318 respondents out of which we analyze 289 responses by using confirmatory factor analysis and structured equation modeling. The results suggested that FFRV seems to significantly and positively affect both PBA and RBA. Both PBA and RBA seem to have a significant and positive effect on Self-reinforcing, Doing good to compensate for, Bribery, and Philanthropy, except for bribery having a negative coefficient. RBA also seems to positively affect Complying & leveraging, Business Expansion, and Product representation, whereas, PBA seems to have a positive effect on Bridging, Complying & leveraging, Infusing, and Discrimination. Community and family seem to positively affect PBA, whereas community and religion seem to affect RBA. Results also suggested that business positively moderate, whereas family and religion negatively moderate the effect of FFRV on PBA. We also draw attention to the fluidity characteristic of the religion logic, through which family firms interpret the role of religion among other logics in influencing ethical decisions.
