Book excerpt: Direct injection (DI) diesel engine is well design today as a main power train solution for trucks and others relevant heavy duty vehicles. However, at the same time emission legislation, mainly for oxides of nitrogens (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) becomes more obvious, reducing their limit to extremely low values. One efficient method to control NOx in order to achieve the future emission limit are the rather high exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) rates accompanied by increased boost pressure to avoid the negative impact on soot emissions. EGR is one of the most effective means of reducing NOx emissions from compression ignition (CI) engines and is widely used in order to meet the emission standards. In the present work, experimental investigation has been carried out to make an analysis the NOx reduction characteristics and the effect to the engine performance by using exhaust gas recirculation between two different fueled engine using biodiesel (palm oil methyl ester B5) and light diesel. This experiment was carried out using a four-cylinder DI diesel engine Mitsubishi 4D68. The purpose of this experiment was conducted is to know the effect of EGR on diesel engine performance and the quantity of NOx emissions in diesel engine's exhaust. The performance of the diesel engine and the quantity of NOx emissions in exhaust gas with using EGR in this experiment will be compared with the performance of the engine and the quantity of NOx emissions in the exhaust gas which not using EGR during the experiment. The results obtained by experiments showing that the EGR has caused the engine performance decreased as compared with no use of EGR. EGR is the best solution for reduced the production of NOx in the exhaust.

Book excerpt: India, being second largely populated country in the world and 70% of its population depends on agriculture as their main job. Stationary CI engines find wide applications in agricultural area for pumping water, power generation and other crop processing works. Even though emission regulations for such engine applications do not come under stringent norms, their contribution cannot be overlooked. NOx(Oxides of Nitrogen) is considered as one of the most objectionable pollutant from diesel engine. Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR), has long been of interest to engine designers, researchers, and regulating authorities in abating NOx. Implementation of EGR for naturally aspirated stationary diesel engines are relatively simple and a study of the application of high level EGR on such an engine is carried to study its impact on the other performance parameters. The results of this investigation give insight into the effect of EGR level on the development of gaseous emissions as well as mechanisms of its formation. Reductions in NOx amount are found to be remarkable with EGR but combustion quality deteriorates at higher loads and higher percentages of EGR due to a significant decrease of A/F ratio. EGR up to 60% is found optimum with 190 bar injection pressure without sacrificing thermal efficiency and increase in unburned HC significantly.

Book excerpt: Various combinations of commercially available technologies could greatly reduce fuel consumption in passenger cars, sport-utility vehicles, minivans, and other light-duty vehicles without compromising vehicle performance or safety. Assessment of Technologies for Improving Light Duty Vehicle Fuel Economy estimates the potential fuel savings and costs to consumers of available technology combinations for three types of engines: spark-ignition gasoline, compression-ignition diesel, and hybrid. According to its estimates, adopting the full combination of improved technologies in medium and large cars and pickup trucks with spark-ignition engines could reduce fuel consumption by 29 percent at an additional cost of $2,200 to the consumer. Replacing spark-ignition engines with diesel engines and components would yield fuel savings of about 37 percent at an added cost of approximately $5,900 per vehicle, and replacing spark-ignition engines with hybrid engines and components would reduce fuel consumption by 43 percent at an increase of $6,000 per vehicle. The book focuses on fuel consumption-the amount of fuel consumed in a given driving distance-because energy savings are directly related to the amount of fuel used. In contrast, fuel economy measures how far a vehicle will travel with a gallon of fuel. Because fuel consumption data indicate money saved on fuel purchases and reductions in carbon dioxide emissions, the book finds that vehicle stickers should provide consumers with fuel consumption data in addition to fuel economy information.

Book excerpt: The light-duty vehicle fleet is expected to undergo substantial technological changes over the next several decades. New powertrain designs, alternative fuels, advanced materials and significant changes to the vehicle body are being driven by increasingly stringent fuel economy and greenhouse gas emission standards. By the end of the next decade, cars and light-duty trucks will be more fuel efficient, weigh less, emit less air pollutants, have more safety features, and will be more expensive to purchase relative to current vehicles. Though the gasoline-powered spark ignition engine will continue to be the dominant powertrain configuration even through 2030, such vehicles will be equipped with advanced technologies, materials, electronics and controls, and aerodynamics. And by 2030, the deployment of alternative methods to propel and fuel vehicles and alternative modes of transportation, including autonomous vehicles, will be well underway. What are these new technologies - how will they work, and will some technologies be more effective than others? Written to inform The United States Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission standards, this new report from the National Research Council is a technical evaluation of costs, benefits, and implementation issues of fuel reduction technologies for next-generation light-duty vehicles. Cost, Effectiveness, and Deployment of Fuel Economy Technologies for Light-Duty Vehicles estimates the cost, potential efficiency improvements, and barriers to commercial deployment of technologies that might be employed from 2020 to 2030. This report describes these promising technologies and makes recommendations for their inclusion on the list of technologies applicable for the 2017-2025 CAFE standards.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this project is to determine the effect of the exhaust temperature on the performance of the diesel engine with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) with respect to engine speed, throttle, biodiesel fuel and diesel fuel. Experiments have been performed for diesel fuel and bio-diesel fuel with 50% of throttle position for with and without EGR system. Engine brake torque, brake power and the exhaust temperature have been investigated for both fuels. All data were collected using data acquisition system which operates with Dewesoft software. The data were then exported to the Microsoft excel in order to construct graphs for performance analysis for each type of fuel and the engine conditions. From the analysis, it was found that the existence of EGR valve were reducing the exhaust temperature. Other than that, the torque produced by the engine with EGR valve were also lower than the engine without EGR valve. This shows that the exhaust temperature has an effect on the engine performance and allows the reduction of NOx formation.
