Book excerpt: Tansy ragwort (Senecio iacobea) is a widely distributed weed in the Pacific Northwest (U.S.A.) where it causes severe damage to the livestock industry. Sheep are highly resistant to toxic effects of ragwort, therefore, induction of ragwort preference in sheep was sought as a means to control this poisonous plant. The effect of two early exposure periods to tansy ragwort on future grazing preferences of five sheep genotypes was evaluated. Lambs were exposed at six months of age (ragwort fed fresh), and then at 15 months of age (ragwort fed as pellets). Four treatment groups were created; lambs exposed during both periods (T1), lambs exposed only during the first period (T2), lambs exposed only during the second period (T3), and lambs not exposed in either period (T4). Ragwort preferences were evaluated at 17 (Exp.l) and 19 (Exp. 2) months of age through direct grazing observation, and through plant observation before and after grazing. Experimental animals grazed in paddocks naturally infested with the weed. Results showed no treatment effects on preferences for tansy ragwort. Some remarkable events have occurred in the last 20 years that represent a flurry of activity far beyond what could reasonably have been predicted. In 1969 a special topics review article by C. L. Wilson was published in Annual Reviews of Phytopathology that examined the literature and the potential for biological control of weeds with plant pathogens. In that same year, experiments were conducted in Arkansas that determined whether a fungal plant pathogen could reduce the infestation of a single weed species in rice fields. In Florida a project was under way to determine the potential use of a soil-borne plant pathogen as a means for controlling a single weed species in citrus groves. Work in Australia was published that described experiments that sought to determine whether a pathogen could safely and deliberately be imported and released into a country to control a weed of agricultural importance. All three projects were successful in the sense that Puccinia chondrillina was released into Australia to control rush skeleton weed and was released later into the United States as well, and that Colletotrichum gloeosporioides f.sp. aeschynomene and Phytophthora palmivora were later both marketed for the specific purpose of controlling specific weed species.

Although we consider conservation medicine an emerging field, the concept is the result of the long evolution of transdisciplinary thinking within the health and ecological sciences and the better understanding of the complexity within these various fields of knowledge. Conservation medicine was born from the cross fertilization of ideas generated by this new transdisciplinary design. It examines the links among changes in climate, habitat quality, and land use; emergence and re-emergence of infectious agents, parasites and environmental contaminants; and maintenance of biodiversity and ecosystem functions as they sustain the health of plant and animal communities including humans. During the past ten years, new tools and institutional initiatives for assessing and monitoring ecological health concerns have emerged: landscape epidemiology, disease ecological modeling and web-based analytics. New types of integrated ecological health assessment are being deployed; these efforts incorporate environmental indicator studies with specific biomedical diagnostic tools. Other innovations include the development of non-invasive physiological and behavioral monitoring techniques; the adaptation of modern molecular biological and biomedical techniques; the design of population level disease monitoring strategies; the creation of ecosystem-based health and sentinel species surveillance approaches; and the adaptation of health monitoring systems for appropriate developing country situations. New Directions of Conservation Medicine: Applied Cases of Ecological Health addresses these issues with relevant case studies and detailed applied examples. New Directions of Conservation Medicine challenges the notion that human health is an isolated concern removed from the bounds of ecology and species interactions.
