Book excerpt: Ignition delays for mixtures of ethane, n-butane, isobutane, hydrogen, or propane with oxygen and nitrogen were measured using a flow system with two experimental procedures. Delays were measured in the temperature ranges 571 to 733 degrees C for ethane, 444 to 715 degrees C for n-butane, 564 to 713 degrees C for isobutane, 594 to 652 degrees C for hydrogen, and 540 to 681 degrees C for propane. The effect of fuel concentration was measured for all fuels, and delays were inversely proportional to fuel concentration to the 0.6 to 1.7 power. The effect of oxygen concentration was measured for propane and the butanes, and, in general, delays decreased slightly with increasing oxygen concentration. However, at very low temperatures, for n-butane, the dependence on oxygen concentration increased. The two procedures gave different absolute values for the delays, but the trends were the same by either method. Fram the variation of delay with temperature at constsnt fuel and oxygen concentration, apparent activation energies were calculated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2019 in the subject Engineering - Chemical Engineering, , course: M.TECH, language: English, abstract: This work is an experimental study for the measurement of ignition delay characteristics of burning fuel sprays in cylindrical combustion chambers. It is carried out on hot air and high pressure. The objective of the study is to investigation the effect of hot air temperature and a well as high pressure on ignition delay of diesel fuel sprays. The effect of blending of n-Pentane with pure diesel was investigated. An experimental set up was design for this purpose with the emphasis on optical method for measurement of ignition delay at various pressures. The results presented here show that ignition delay of diesel fuel spray decreases with increase in the temperature and pressure of hot air. Results also show the effect of methyl group being more dominant at low ignition temperatures and that of alkyl group being more dominant at higher temperature. Blending of n-pentane with diesel fuel, increase its ignition delay at low ignition temperatures. However, as the concentration of blending fuel was increased beyond 30%, the ignition temperature increase. Ignition temperature for 40% pentane blends is much higher that the pure diesel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Detailed study of the rates and mechanisms of combustion reactions has not been in the mainstream of combustion research until the recent recognition that further progress in optimizing burner performance and reducing pollutant emission can only be done with fundamental understanding of combustion chemistry. This has become apparent at a time when our understanding of the chemistry, at least of small-molecule combustion, and our ability to model combustion processes on large computers have developed to the point that real confidence can be placed in the results. This book is an introduction for outsiders or beginners as well as a reference work for people already active in the field. Because the spectrum of combustion scientists ranges from chemists with little computing experience to engineers who have had only one college chemistry course, everything needed to bring all kinds of beginners up to the level of current practice in detailed combustion modeling is included. It was a temptation to include critical discussions of modeling results and computer programs that would enable outsiders to start quickly into problem solving. We elected not to do either, because we feel that the former are better put into the primary research literature and that people who are going to do combustion modeling should either write their own programs or collaborate with experts. The only exception to this is in the thermochemical area, where programs have been included to do routine fitting operations. For reference purposes there are tables of thermochemical, transport-property, and rate coefficient data.

Book excerpt: A reflected shock tube technique has been used to measure the ignition delay time for propylene oxide-oxygen-nitrogen mixtures in the temperature range of 900 to 1250 deg K. Ignition delay times were measured by using both streak schlieren and pressure gauges mounted on the back wall of the shock tube. A regression analysis indicated that the delay time multiplied by the propylene oxide concentration to the .8 power and the oxygen concentration to the -1.2 power yielded a best fit when plotted as a logarithm against the reciprocal temperature. This regression analysis also indicated that the nitrogen concentration had no effect on the ignition delay time. The apparent activation energy for the reaction was found to be approximately 19 kcal joule/mole.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data are presented on the flammability and autoignition temperature characteristics of JP-6, JP-150 and HTF-59-24 fuels. Flammability limits of the vapors of these fuels were determined in air at elevated temperatures and at atmospheric pressure. Auto-ignition temperatures and corresponding ignition delay times were obtained under static and dynamic conditions as a function of the pressure and the oxygen concentration of the ambient medium; the effect of fuel volume on auto-ignition was also determined in static tests. The auto-ignition of JP-6 fuel vaporoxygen-nitrogen mixtures was studied in various vessels which were heated uniformly and nonuniformly; critical heat flow requirements for auto-ignition were found for spherical and cylindrical Cu vessels and a spherical stainless steel vessel. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turbulent combustion sits at the interface of two important nonlinear, multiscale phenomena: chemistry and turbulence. Its study is extremely timely in view of the need to develop new combustion technologies in order to address challenges associated with climate change, energy source uncertainty, and air pollution. Despite the fact that modeling of turbulent combustion is a subject that has been researched for a number of years, its complexity implies that key issues are still eluding, and a theoretical description that is accurate enough to make turbulent combustion models rigorous and quantitative for industrial use is still lacking. In this book, prominent experts review most of the available approaches in modeling turbulent combustion, with particular focus on the exploding increase in computational resources that has allowed the simulation of increasingly detailed phenomena. The relevant algorithms are presented, the theoretical methods are explained, and various application examples are given. The book is intended for a relatively broad audience, including seasoned researchers and graduate students in engineering, applied mathematics and computational science, engine designers and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) practitioners, scientists at funding agencies, and anyone wishing to understand the state-of-the-art and the future directions of this scientifically challenging and practically important field.
