Book Synopsis Cape Ann and Monhegan Island Vistas by : James F. O'Gorman
Download or read book Cape Ann and Monhegan Island Vistas written by James F. O'Gorman and published by . This book was released on 2021-06 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late 19th-early 20th century American artists began to gather in summer colonies that stretched from California to New England. In focused recognition of that development, this exhibition groups selected pairs of paintings or prints by artists who worked at very different north-east art colonies at Cape Ann (Gloucester and Rockport), Massachusetts on the one hand, and Monhegan Island, Maine on the other. These locations separated by a hundred miles of ocean became, as did many other contemporary art colonies, important crossroads in the history of American art as they hosted major artists through the years. In the case of these two colonies, figures such as Theresa Bernstein, Eric Hudson, Leon Kroll, Hayley Lever, James Fitzgerald, Lester Stevens, Stow Wengenroth and others visited, and sometimes lived, in both locations. This exhibition includes works by these and other artists from the collections of the Monhegan Museum of Art and History, the Cape Ann Museum, the Rockport Art Association, and private collections. Works by each of these and other artists depicting aspects of either location reflect the differences between the city-size Cape Ann, with its large industrial Gloucester harbor, sizable fishing fleet, and extended Rockport seashore, and by contrast the tiny off-shore island with its amazing cliff formations and smaller harbor and lobster fleet. Published by the Monhegan Museum of Art & History, Monhegan, Maine, to accompany the exhibition of the same name organized by the Monhegan Museum of Art & History and the Cape Ann Museum on view at the MMA&H from July 1 to September 30, 2021, and at the Cape Ann Museum in Gloucester, Massachusetts, from October 23, 2021, to January 16, 2022.
Download or read book Imperial Ecology written by Peder Anker and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aelian's Historical Miscellany is a pleasurable example of light reading for Romans of the early third century. Offering engaging anecdotes about historical figures, retellings of legendary events, and descriptive pieces - in sum: amusement, information, and variety - Aelian's collection of nuggets and narratives could be enjoyed by a wide reading public. A rather similar book had been published in Latin in the previous century by Aulus Gellius; Aelian is a late, perhaps the last, representative of what had been a very popular genre. Here then are anecdotes about the famous Greek philosophers, poets, historians, and playwrights; myths instructively retold; moralizing tales about heroes and rulers, athletes and wise men; reports about styles in dress, foods and drink, lovers, gift-giving practices, entertainments, religious beliefs and death customs; and comments on Greek painting. Some of the information is not preserved in any other source. Underlying it all are Aelian's Stoic ideals as well as this Roman's great admiration for the culture of the Greeks (whose language he borrowed for his writings).

Download or read book A Day at the Seashore written by Kathryn Jackson and published by Golden Books. This book was released on 2010-05-11 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A classic Little Golden Book—with a summertime theme! Nancy and Timmy hop out of their beds one summer morning and help pack their swimsuits and lunch. And then it's off to the seashore! In a charming rhyme, this Little Golden Book from 1951 (then titled A Day at the Beach) describes what preschoolers will find there: "You can catch little crabs—if you're quick! You can draw great big pictures right on the beach with a piece of a shell or a stick." Oh, what fun! From Kathryn and Byron Jackson, authors of the popular Little Golden Book The Saggy Baggy Elephant, and Corinne Malvern, illustrator of the Little Golden Books Doctor Dan the Bandage Man and Nurse Nancy.
Download or read book A Legacy of Art written by Carol Lowrey and published by Hudson Hills. This book was released on 2007 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than a century, a Gilded Age mansion on the south side of New York City's Gramercy Park has been home to the National Arts Club (NAC), its magnificent interior a refuge from hectic city life. In this special catalog, Lowrey, curator of the club's permanent collection, documents selected works by Artist Life Members, artists who were given lifetime memberships in the club in exchange for one of their works (the program ended in 1950 with the advent of the abstract expressionists). The father of well-known American sculptor Alexander Calder, Alexander Stirling Calder, was an Artist Life Member, and his sculpture of the painter George Bellows is among the many artworks included here. Also featured are an A-to-Z listing of Artist Life Members and a brief history of the NAC. The catalog section includes full-color reproductions and descriptions of the artworks as well as brief biographies of the artist. Many members' works show European influences, particularly impressionism and the Barbizon school, while others are distinctly American, as in the Ash Can school. A fine and fitting tribute to the NAC legacy that will be of interest to club, academic, and large public libraries. 75 colour & 175 b/w illustrations

Book Synopsis The Cos Cob Art Colony by : Susan G. Larkin
Download or read book The Cos Cob Art Colony written by Susan G. Larkin and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What Argenteuil in the 1870s was to French Impressionists, Cos Cob between 1890 and 1920 was to American Impressionists Childe Hassam, Theodore Robinson, John Twachtman, J. Alden Weir, and their followers. These artists and writers came together to work in the modest Cos Cob section of Greenwich, Connecticut, testing new styles and new themes in the stimulating company of colleagues. This beautiful book is the first to examine the art colony at Cos Cob and the role it played in the development of American Impressionist art. During the art-colony period, says Susan Larkin, Greenwich was changing from a farming and fishing community to a prosperous suburb of New York. The artists who gathered in Cos Cob produced work that reflects the resulting tensions between tradition and modernity, nature and technology, and country and city. The artists' preferred subjects -- colonial architecture, quiet landscapes, contemplative women -- held a complex significance for them, which Larkin explores. Drawing on maritime history, garden design, women's studies, and more, she places the art colony in its cultural and historical context and reveals unexpected depth in paintings of enormous popular appeal.
