With faith and determination, Dr. Sei and Mrs. Yah Buor have overcome many obstacles, and have provided the leadership necessary to purchase 20 acres of land for the campus, construct several campus buildings, and develop curricula for Associate Degree programs in four areas of study. With the help of many, God's plan for education in Ganta, Liberia, is coming to fruition. Follow the journey as one and then another building takes shape. Rejoice as approval comes for associate degrees in all four areas. Continue through the challenges of a growing college and the victories as students reap the benefits of their education. Walk with the staff through a valley called Ebola and learn how God is leading them on the road to becoming a four-year college.

The country was founded in 1847 by freed slaves from the United States, and it was the first African nation to gain its independence in the 20th century. The country is rich in natural resources such as timber, diamonds, and iron ore, but it has suffered from political instability and civil war. The official language of Liberia is English, which is a result of the country's ties to the United States. The religion is predominantly Christian, with around 85% of the population practicing Christianity. Liberia has a unique and diverse culture, with strong emphasis on traditional beliefs and practices. The country is known for its vibrant music scene, which includes genres such as Afro-pop and Gospel. Despite its troubled past, Liberia has made significant strides towards political stability and economic growth in recent years.

Book excerpt: In A Digital Liberia, Darren Wilkins, an accomplished ICT Professional with more than twelve years of experience in the field of ICT, describes the impact of information and communications technologies on the future of Liberia. Emerging from a fourteen-year civil war and more than 150 years of underdevelopment, poverty, and illiteracy, Liberia is presently behind the curve with respect to modern and emerging technologies. Even so, A Digital Liberia addresses six critical sectors in which ICT can play an important role: education, government, business, agriculture, security, and healthcare. Wilkins delineates strategies that will bring a paradigm shift in the Liberian society and identifies broadband through submarine fiber optic cables located in and around Africa, Africa, along with pointing out mobile technologies, open source software, cloud computing, and green IT as those technologies that will catalyze Liberias entry into the Digital Economy. A Digital Liberia, one of the most optimistic literatures on a developing country, represents an unprecedented effort by an African-born author to outline plans for economic development through ICTs.

Book excerpt: Inclusive education is complex, multi-faceted and ever-changing and to date there has been no fixed definition of what is meant by the term ‘inclusion’, leading to confusion about what inclusive education actually means in practice. This key text introduces readers to the underlying knowledge and wider complexities of inclusion and explores how this can relate to practice. Considering inclusion as referring to all learners, it surveys the concept of inclusive practice in its broadest sense and examines its implementation in a variety of educational institutions. Throughout the book, international contributors consider this broader concept to critically evaluate the realities of practically implementing inclusive objectives. Each chapter assesses key theories and concepts alongside a range of examples to encourage students to think critically and reappraise their own experience as learners. Key topics covered include: • studying the definition of inclusion • the relevance of pedagogy in inclusive practice • how to lead and manage for inclusion • the issue of inclusion in early years, primary, secondary and post-16 settings • inclusive practice for families • international perspectives on inclusive practice. Fully illustrated with tasks, case studies, discussion questions and recommended reading, Inclusive Education is essential reading for second and third year students looking to extend their research and writing, and to develop their critical and reflective thinking.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1978, this book was written at a time when belief was high in Western-guided economic development of the emerging countries. The success of Marshall Plan in war-torn Europe generated a US-led optimism that, with generous inflows of aid and technical assistance, the Third World could be won over in the Cold War. The author’s direct experience as a young academic economist in Cyprus, Malaysia, Uganda and Liberia led him to question this general optimism: the reality on the ground in the developing world did not seem to match Western optimism. Theories and blueprints, made in the West, did not fit the requirements of developing countries. Higher production and better income distribution were inseparable twin objectives of developing nations. That meant, production of a higher national output must at the same time promote social justice. Investment must create adequate jobs so that new entrants into rapidly expanding labor force could be gainfully employed. Yet, the dominant (Western) theories of development at the time, in particular the Trickle Down Theory of Growth, prescribed "Growth First, Distribution Later" strategy. Similarly, Import Substitution Industrialization theories were emphasized at the expense of export-led growth. Dualistic Growth theories preached urban-biased, anti-rural development. This book was written as a rebuttal of such faulty theorizing and misguided professional technical assistance and the book’s message is no less valid today than in the 1970’s.

Book excerpt: In the style of Nudge or The Spirit Level - a groundbreaking book that will change the way you look at the world. Tina Rosenberg has spent her career tackling some of the world's hardest problems. The Haunted Land, her searing book on how Eastern Europe faced the crimes of Communism, was awarded both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize in the US. In Join the Club, she identifies a brewing social revolution that is changing the way people live, based on harnessing the positive force of peer pressure. Her stories of peer power in action show how it has reduced teen smoking in the United States, made villages in India healthier and more prosperous, helped minority students get top grades in college calculus, and even led to the fall of Slobodan Milosevic. She tells how creative social entrepreneurs are starting to use peer pressure to accomplish goals as personal as losing weight and as global as fighting terrorism. Inspiring and engrossing, Join the Club explains how we can better our world through humanity's most powerful and abundant resource: our connections with one another.
