Johnson continued for a nmnber of years, and had the satisfaction of believing that he had been an influential assistant in procuring the passage of the law of 1834, -Vl1i0lt gave Pennsylvania a general system of public schools, and virtually proved the winning of the long contest with ignorance and prejudice. During the long series of years wlnle this law may be said to have been maturing, not less than two hundred and twenty public acts on education had been passed by the legislature, but none ofthem, until this, was upon a busts broad and liberal enough to be satisfactory to the friends of education, or practical in its results. Much time and money had been spent in procuring this course of legislation, various isolated col-leges, academies, &c., had been benefited, and a number of nets had been passed to establish public schools exclusively fbr the poor; I species of benefaetiou which that class, to its credit, was too independent to accept. In the autumn of 1823, feeling that his position and prospects justified the step, Mr. Johnson united himselfin marriage with tlte eldest daughter of Dr. Loth.
