This book was released on 1997 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document is an integrated report of the findings of a three-phase research program undertaken by the Angus Reid Group. This program involved secondary data analysis of existing statistical information provided by the MPHEC, qualitative research through focus groups with students at all levels of the education system, and a quantitative telephone survey of the 1997 graduating high school class in all three Maritime provinces. This report provides an overview of the key findings, pulling together the main trends and analyses, and outlines some of the implications for directions that post-secondary education might take in the Maritime provinces. More detailed results of each of the three phases are in the reports prepared separately for the secondary data analysis, the focus groups, and the quantitative survey.

Book excerpt: Maritime universities will have to replace over half their faculty over the next ten years in order to compensate for the combined effects of retirements & attrition. This report presents an overview of this situation with regard to three interrelated issues: the size & nature of the pool of available candidates; institutional policies & practices related to faculty recruitment; and possible difficulties in retaining faculty who are hired. The report then makes recommendations for consideration by various stakeholder groups (institutions, government, & the Higher Education Commission) to address those issues. The appendix contains a summary of the Symposium on Faculty Recruitment & Retention in the Maritimes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canada's four easternmost provinces, while richly diverse in character and history, share many elements of their political and economic experience within Confederation. In this volume thirteen leading historians explore the shifting tides of Atlantic Canada's history, beginning with the union of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick with Ontario and Quebec to form the Dominion in 1867. Continuing on through Prince Edward Island's entry into Confederation six years later and Newfoundland's in 1949, they take the story of Atlantic Canada up to the 1980s. Collectively their work sheds light on the complex political dynamic between the region and Ottawa and reveals the roots of current social and economic realities. Fragmentation versus integration, plenty versus scarcity, centre versus periphery, and other models inform their analysis. The development of regional disparity, and responses to it, form a major theme. The tradition of regional protest by Maritimers, and later Atlantic Canadians, runs deep; so does their commitment to the idea of an integrated Canadian nation. Protests, over the decades, have primarily been expressions of frustration at perceived exclusion from the full benefits of national union. The creation of national markets for labour, capital, and goods often operated to their detriment, and political decisions at the national level frequently reinforced rather than alleviated the regional predicament. More than an account of the wealthy and powerful, this book often places ordinary men and women at the centre of the story. Above all, it reveals the resilience of Atlantic Canadians as they have struggled to overcome their problems and to share in the benefits of life in the Canadian community.

Book excerpt: This book traces the development of higher education in Canada, through a detailed description and analysis of what was being taught and of the research opportunities available to professors in the years from 1860 to 1960. Background is provided in the opening chapters of Part I, which outline the origins of post-secondary education in both French and English Canada from 1635 to 1860, and in the parallel chapters of Parts II to V which describe the establishment of new and the growth of existing institutions during the period 1861-90, 1891-1920, 1921-40, and 1941-60. The remaining chapters of each of the book's main divisions present an examination of the curricula in arts and science, professional education, and graduate studies in 1860, 1890, 1920, 1940, and 1960, as well as the conditions pertaining to scholarship and research in these years. The concluding chapter identifies the characteristics which differentiate Canadian higher education from that of other countries. The book includes a full bibliography, an extensive index, and statistical appendices providing data on enrolment and degrees granted. A History of Higher Education in Canada 1663-1960 will be the definitive work in its field, valuable both for the wealth of information and the historical insights it contains.
