Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this volume are written by leading economists working on the Indian economy. They collectively emphasize the importance of policies and institutions for sustained growth and poverty reduction, stressing that the success of sector-specific policies is vitally dependent on the nature of markets and the functioning of institutions such as those charged with regulating and overseeing critical sectors. Individual contributions assess the role of Indian government policy in key sectors and emphasize the policies required to ensure improvements in these sectors. The first section discusses aspects of the macro economy; the second deals with agriculture and social sectors; the third with jobs and how labor markets function in agriculture, industry and services; and the fourth with infrastructure services, specifically electricity, telecommunications and transport. The essays are drawn from the most influential papers presented in recent years on Indian economic policy at the Stanford Center for International Development.
Book Synopsis Educations in Ethnic Violence by : Matthew Lange
Download or read book Educations in Ethnic Violence written by Matthew Lange and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-12-12 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Educations in Ethnic Violence, Matthew Lange explores the effects education has on ethnic violence. Lange contradicts the widely held belief that education promotes peace and tolerance. Rather, Lange finds that education commonly contributes to aggression, especially in environments with ethnic divisions, limited resources and ineffective political institutions. He describes four ways in which organized learning spurs ethnic conflicts. Socialization in school shapes students' identities and the norms governing intercommunal relations. Education can also increase students' frustration and aggression when their expectations are not met. Sometimes, the competitive atmosphere gives students an incentive to participate in violence. Finally, education provides students with superior abilities to mobilize violent ethnic movements. Lange employs a cross-national statistical analysis with case studies of Sri Lanka, Cyprus, the Palestinian territories, India, sub-Saharan Africa, Canada and Germany.

Book Synopsis Growing Populations, Changing Landscapes by : National Academy of Sciences
Download or read book Growing Populations, Changing Landscapes written by National Academy of Sciences and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-06-12 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the world's population exceeds an incredible 6 billion people, governmentsâ€"and scientistsâ€"everywhere are concerned about the prospects for sustainable development. The science academies of the three most populous countries have joined forces in an unprecedented effort to understand the linkage between population growth and land-use change, and its implications for the future. By examining six sites ranging from agricultural to intensely urban to areas in transition, the multinational study panel asks how population growth and consumption directly cause land-use change, and explore the general nature of the forces driving the transformations. Growing Populations, Changing Landscapes explains how disparate government policies with unintended consequences and globalization effects that link local land-use changes to consumption patterns and labor policies in distant countries can be far more influential than simple numerical population increases. Recognizing the importance of these linkages can be a significant step toward more effective environmental management.

Book Synopsis Education and Social Mobility by : P.T. Thomas
Download or read book Education and Social Mobility written by P.T. Thomas and published by Notion Press. This book was released on with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the provision of basic social services, in particular, access to education, as the central building blocks of any human development strategy and it also signifies a substantial contribution towards the central role of education in social mobility. In examining the impact of educational development of any society or group, the questions that the proponents of egalitarian approach ask are: Who benefits? Who loses? What is the resulting socio-economic status of the people? Although gender inequality in education is not so prominent in Kerala, the difference between communities and classes is one of the critical aspects of this broader phenomenon of disparity in Kerala. Recent studies regarding poverty and inequality show that although poverty is declining, inequality between socio-economic groups is increasing in Kerala. In this scenario, the educational backwardness of the socio-economic groups in Kerala is a matter of particular concern to the policy makers and this book hopes to provide some insight into this subject. It will be highly useful to policy makers, administrators and academicians.
