Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first edition of this book published in 1988, Shirley Engle and I offered a broader and more democratic curriculum as an alternative to the persistent back-to-the-basics rhetoric of the ‘70s and ‘80s. This curriculum urged attention to democratic practices and curricula in the school if we wanted to improve the quality of citizen participation and strengthen this democracy. School practices during that period reflected a much lower priority for social studies. Fewer social studies offerings, fewer credits required for graduation and in many cases, the job descriptions of social studies curriculum coordinators were transformed by changing their roles to general curriculum consultants. The mentality that prevailed in the nation’s schools was “back to the basics” and the basics never included or even considered the importance of heightening the education of citizens. We certainly agree that citizens must be able to read, write and calculate but these abilities are not sufficient for effective citizenship in a democracy. This version of the original work appears at a time when young citizens, teachers and schools find themselves deluged by a proliferation of curriculum standards and concomitant mandatory testing. In the ‘90s, virtually all subject areas including United States history, geography, economic and civics developed curriculum standards, many funded by the federal government. Subsequently, the National Council for the Social Studies issued the Social Studies Curriculum Standards that received no federal support. Accountability, captured in the No Child Left Behind Act passed by Congress, has become a powerful, political imperative that has a substantial and disturbing influence on the curriculum, teaching and learning in the first decade of the 21st century.
Book Synopsis Education and the Democratic Ideal by : Steven M. Cahn
Download or read book Education and the Democratic Ideal written by Steven M. Cahn and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2004-01-27 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steven M. Cahn has succeeded in articulating a defense of a particularly valuable conception of higher education in the liberal arts. He presents acute logical analyses in a clear, readable style. In particular, his critique of a too facile concern with 'relevance, ' his insistence on the importance of standards and, above all, his account of the importance of liberal arts education to democracy should be read by educators and policymakers alike. Even those who ultimately reject Cahn's position surely would profit from having to wrestle with his arguments. ROBERT L. SIMON Professor of Philosophy, Hamilton College Clinton, New York Education and the Democratic Ideal is a closely reasoned study of grading, assignments, examinations, and other tactical issues. Because of this it is a real departure from most discussion of university education, and the more to be valued. RONALD BERMAN Past Chairman National Endowment for the Humanitie

Book excerpt: This volume analyzes and critiques the relationships between the means and ends of American public education, based upon the premise that policies governing the system of education should be consistent with its social/political philosophy. In America, this means that public education must be based on the fundamental principles of the American democratic ideal: concern for natural rights of freedom and independence for the individual, while ensuring the responsibility of each individual for society as a whole.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Abrams (1902-1970) stood at the center of the policies, problems, and politics surrounding urban planning, housing reform, and the public and private interests involved in the expansion of the American state. He uniquely combined in one person the often divergent roles of "public" and "policy" intellectual. As a "public intellectual," Abrams's voice reached the American public through the pages of The Nation, The New Leader, and The New York Times, with accessible explanations of civil rights legislation, mortgage financing, government policies, and urban renewal. As a "policy intellectual," he helped to create the New York Housing Authority, lobbied President Kennedy to issue an executive order barring discrimination in federally subsidized housing projects, and combated the growing threat of a federally initiated "business welfare state." Housing and the Democratic Ideal is the only comprehensive work on Charles Abrams to date. Though structured as a narrative biography, this book also uses Abrams's experiences as a lens through which we can better understand the development of American social policy and state expansion during the twentieth century. In his left-leaning critique of centrist liberalism, Abrams took aim at the use of fiscal and monetary policies to achieve social objectives—a practice that allowed business interests to maximize private profits at the expense of public benefits. His growing concern over racial discrimination prefigured its emergence as a highly contested aspect of the American state. A. Scott Henderson not only provides clear insight into Abrams's role in American policymaking and his individual achievements as a pioneering civil rights lawyer, scholar, and urban reformer, but also offers an in-depth analysis of modern state-building and the government-private sector relations ushered in by the New Deal.

Book Synopsis Teaching Toward Democracy by : William Ayers
Download or read book Teaching Toward Democracy written by William Ayers and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-11-17 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Teaching Toward Democracy" examines the contested space of schooling and school reform with a focus on the unique challenges and opportunities that teaching in a democratic society provides. Teaching in and for democracy involves developing particular qualities of mind that teachers explore and work to develop as they become more effective educators. Some chapters open with familiar experiences in the lives of teachers in schools (working with parents and communities, or dealing with classroom discipline and management) and illuminate that commonplace in new, helpful, and sometimes startling, ways. Other chapters present possible interventions any teacher might make in any classroom for example, using the arts as an organizing center and metaphor for teaching more generally, or rethinking the press of politics on our every day practice. This book foregrounds the central idea that democratic ideals are a necessary starting point and context in which to enact our teaching here and now."
Book Synopsis Teaching Democratic Ideals to Public Affairs Students by : Thomas Andrew Bryer
Download or read book Teaching Democratic Ideals to Public Affairs Students written by Thomas Andrew Bryer and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-06-23 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary public policy challenges are increasingly called “wicked problems,” or problems that cannot be solved by one sector or one agency of government alone. Solutions to wicked problems often further require the recognition and acceptance of tradeoffs or drawbacks, which might include a cost or sacrifice for the whole of society or a subsection of society. Based on the premise that government of, by, and for the people is not sufficient to rise to and meet wicked public policy problems, this volume provides strategies and ideas for public administration educators across diverse environments, as well as undergraduate and graduate education, to include and integrate the principles of “with the people” in public administration education and practice. This book explores the ways that notions of governing with citizens can be integrated into courses that focus on public administration and policy. It invites instructors to think about what it means to be educators within higher education institutions in a democratic society, championing deliberation and engagement as a way to prepare students for professional roles in their communities. Each chapter is written by a contributor who has road-tested the inclusion of democratic ideals and principles in their own classrooms, and each chapter therefore provides blueprints, curriculum plans, and lesson plans for the integration of democratic principles in public administration education and practice. Teaching Democratic Ideals to Public Affairs Students is essential reading for faculty in public administration, public policy, and political science departments, and it will also be a useful guidebook for practicing public administrators, as well as those who provide training to practicing administrators and leaders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Democratic Ideal in Education In our land there is to-day considerable discussion upon educational matters. Appeals are made sometimes to our reason, and sometimes to our prejudices, and considerable bitterness of feeling is aroused and displayed, and generally much pother is created upon matters that are only incidentally educational. Let us trust that out of this evil good may come. Let us hope that what is at present an interest produced artificially, and with much labour, may become perennial and natural. Let us seize this golden opportunity to make our people permanently interested in this fateful problem of national education, so that the popular apathy, which in the past has been our curse, may develop into a popular vigilance, without which no truly national system is possible. But popular vigilance needs popular intelligence. Until our people can be made to see the true inwardness of their own instinctive faith, until they can be made to realise what national training means, and to understand why we need a better system of education - not, indeed, to beat the German, but to beat the devil - only when these matters have become part of our common faith may we look for the regeneration of this land. The superficial is always evident, but the spirit is rarely recognised. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis The Democratic Dilemma of American Education by : Arnold Shober
Download or read book The Democratic Dilemma of American Education written by Arnold Shober and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-19 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compelling new book asks: How can American education policy be consistent with democratic ideals? Robust democracy is the combination of participation, self-rule, equality, understanding, and inclusion, but these norms can produce contradictory policy. Local control in education policy can undermine educational equality. Participation in teachers unions can improve working conditions but thwart self-rule by local taxpayers. The Democratic Dilemma of American Education draws on contemporary research in political science and education policy to offer remarkably balanced insights into these challenging issues. Expertly navigating through local, state, and federal layers of education policy, Arnold Shober examines contemporary controversies over education governance, teachers unions and collective bargaining, school funding, school choice, academic accountability, and desegregation. Shober describes the inherent practical dilemmas of current policy and the difficulties policymakers face in overcoming them to produce lasting educational reform in a democratic, federal system of government. Timely, engaging, and accessible, this is the ideal resource for courses in public policy as well as education and politics.
Book Synopsis Educating the Democratic Mind by : Walter C. Parker
Download or read book Educating the Democratic Mind written by Walter C. Parker and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1995-11-02 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There can be no democracy without democrats, and democrats are made, not born. This volume features sixteen provocative essays, old and new, on the concern to educate young people for that loosely-defined genre of political and social life called democracy. It is an historical collection on the central question of our era: How and what might children be taught so that they respond well and creatively to the demands of an increasingly diverse society that is organized under and struggling, on and off, to realize the democratic ideal? How are we to educate children to embrace difference and maintain a common life? Contributors include Walter C. Parker, Ann V. Angell, James A. Banks, Jane Bernard-Powers, Carole L. Hahn, David Mathews, William B. Stanley, and James Anthony Whitson.
