Book excerpt: Canada has become one of the most popular destinations for international students at the higher education level. A number of complex factors and trends, both in Canada and globally, have contributed to the emergence of Canada as a destination for international higher education. However, more research is still needed to better understand the experiences of international students in Canada considering the rapid growth in numbers as well as the social, political, and linguistic singularity of Canada as a destination. Multidisciplinary Perspectives on International Student Experience in Canadian Higher Education is an essential scholarly publication that explores international students' experiences in Canadian colleges and universities. It seeks to explore the various factors, aspects, challenges, and successes that characterize the international student experience in Canadian higher education from the perspective of international students and the academic communities to which they belong. Featuring a wide range of topics such as information literacy, professional development, and experiential learning, this book is ideal for academicians, instructors, researchers, policymakers, curriculum designers, and students.

Download or read book Science Education in Atlantic Canada in Historical Perspective written by Charles McFadden and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This invited research report was presented in August 2003 to a science education conference convened by the Atlantic Provinces Committee on the Sciences. Based on 20 interviews and documentary information from the Departments of Education of the Provinces of Newfoundland & Labrador, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, this report places current science education practices in Atlantic Canada in historical perspective (1935 to 2003). Professional preparation of science teachers, their continuing professional development, the science curriculum and the proportion of the high school age cohort engaged in science education all receive attention. Major changes in the scope and character of science education during this period are identified as well as characteristics that remained consistent. The report concludes with several recommendations to address problems identified through this research. These problems include declining attention in the region to science teacher professional development, an imbalance between science education as preparation for professional study of science almost to the exclusion of preparation of high school students for responsible citizenship, a need for greater collaboration between science educators at secondary and post-secondary levels and a need for student assessment in science that better matches the principal goals of education as defined by the four provinces of Atlantic Canada.
