Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "And what is truth?"This question appears only in the testimony of John, not in any of the other gospels. According to his report, Jesus and Pilate were alone. If they were alone, only Jesus or Pilate could have reported it later. Roman justice was swift. Within hours Jesus was stripped, was being scourged. He was unlikely to been capable of passing on any such details. But, if it was not Pilate, who was the witness? The Army had taken over a particularly ugly four-story modern tower block for its headquarters. In the long hours of the night there was a need for some distraction in the operations room. Lit by a glaring wall of illuminated maps, in a silence broken by the squawk of radios sending regular reports, and only occasionally more excited chatter, it was my solitary kingdom from late evening until early morning. When the rest of the operations staff arrived, after I had delivered my report of the previous twenty-four to the general, sometimes together with his brigade commanders, I was free to breakfast and sleep. It was rare for the general to ask me what to do next. In fact he never did: missing a valuable opportunity. I was hardly an important cog in his army. In contrast to his soldiers on the street, I was as safe as in a submarine. I was desk-bound, a scribbler. No-one ever shot at me. I was never required to shoot back at anyone. As I left my place, another officer would take over in front of the maps, the radios, the telephones and the tape-recorders. I was bored.Perhaps one of the Army padres left a bible there, intending it to save another soul. Forty decades later, I am now able to realize: this is where it started.Within five miles of my kingdom, Christians were killing Christians. The Catholics, known as and calling themselves Taigs, were killing Protestants. The Protestants, known as Prods, were killing Taigs. All of this was happening in a ferment of hatred not known in for centuries Europe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Israel’s election, calling, and history make up a big part of Scripture. It could be said that they belong to the “DNA of the Bible.” But why is it then that the Christian narrative about the Messiah, Israel, and the nations, often seemed to have and sometimes even still has a different “genetic structure”? Does Israel—together with its election and promises—leave God’s stage through a side door, when Jesus appears on stage? Does a changing of roles take place, within a different story? Does the Messiah function within it as some kind of “black hole” in which the eternal election and calling of Israel disappear? How do we read God’s way? The Holocaust made us realize that our de-Jew-ized reading and preaching of Scripture contributed in various ways to this catastrophe. And we find ourselves confronted by the question: How does the narrative of the Bible then look when the whole of Scripture plays a decisive role, and the faithfulness of God toward Israel stays in the center? This book presents an answer to these questions, calling us to learn to read God’s way anew, and to walk in it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hebrews were waiting for the Messiah to come and set them free; free from the bondage of the Roman enemy. But then, announced to a group of shepherds one night, the Messiah arrived, was wrapped in strips of cloth, and took His royal position in a feed trough. This was the Son of God who takes away the sins of the world! He was given authority from His Father. He would show signs of His Messiahship and have a great following because of His miraculous healings; even bringing the dead back to life! But His message was confusing to some. He didnt meet the expectations of the Messiah. He said that we should love our enemies. He said that God was a loving heavenly Father and even referred to Him as Daddy (Abba Father). And then there was His message of relating to God through humility. Matthews writing helped the early Hebrew Christians recognize Jesus is the Messiah; an important message that encourages one to stand firmly in faith. Recognizing and identifying with the Messiahs message will lead us to call upon our one true Teacher and Savior, Jesus Christ through whom we receive Gods loving grace and mercy.

Book excerpt: In this book, Harris Lenowitz explores the fascinating history of Jewish messianic movements. Looking in detail at all of the Jewish messiahs about whom anything is known, he introduces each of these figures in turn, and offers extensive excerpts of the original texts that tell their stories. The messiahs whom we meet in these pages range from the inspiring to the tragic and bizarre. By examining the messianic idea in the tradition which gave birth to it, Lenowitz both sheds new light on this engrossing aspect of Jewish history and provides a firmer basis for understanding contemporary messianic groups.

Book excerpt: He then traces the rise and fall of "the messianic idea"' in Jewish studies and gives an alternative account of early Jewish messiah language: the convention worked because there existed both an accessible pool of linguistic resources and a community of competent language users. Whereas it is commonly objected that the normal rules for understanding "christos" do not apply in the case of Paul since he uses the word as a name rather than a title, Novenson shows that "christos" in Paul is neither a name nor a title but rather a Greek honorific, like Epiphanes or Augustus. Focusing on several set phrases that have been taken as evidence that Paul either did or did not use "christos" in its conventional sense, Novenson concludes that the question cannot be settled at the level of formal grammar. Examining nine passages in which Paul comments on how he means the word "christos", Novenson shows that they do all that we normally expect any text to do to count as a messiah text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A messiah is an individual appointed by God to a specific task of importance, and elevated to a level of far greater authority than a prophet by leading (or claiming to lead) a group or movement. The movement comes to be uniquely centered on his or her teachings, and the messiah claims spiritual and temporal authority over its followers. This book is an examination of both males and females in the Judeo-Christian heritage (excluding Jesus of Nazareth) who either claimed to be the messiah, were viewed by contemporaries as such, or are considered by a significant number of scholars to have been motivated by messianic goals. The work is arranged chronologically, with details about messiahs from before Christ through the dawn of the technological age at the end of the nineteenth century. It covers nearly 100 individual messiahs, including such Old Testament figures as King Hezekiah and Herod the Great, as well as later messiahs both obscure and historically renowned (even Queen Elizabeth I and King Charles I were touted as messiahs by certain devoted followers). Meticulously researched, the book includes an extensive bibliography.

Book excerpt: The Jews in the first century wondered: who would He resemble? Would He be a prophet like Moses? A priest like Melchizedek? A king like David? He would surprise them all, from the day He entered the Jordan River until He went through a metamorphosis on a high mountain. He would be tested in a harsh wilderness-and pass the test! He would deliver those tormented by demons and feed both a Jewish and a Gentile multitude, and yet be rejected by his neighbors. So here is His ministry, in the midst of an intensely Jewish world of Pharisees and Sadducees and Essenes, confounding them all because no man spoke quite like Him. Come and see Him also beside the lovely waters of the Sea of Galilee. You will never be the same if you behold His ministry in the light of the Scriptures that He so loved, lived, and fulfilled.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the Study Guide for the video series about "The Messiah Beyond a Shadow of Doubt." The book explores the Jewish holy days, which provide crystal clear proof that Jesus of Nazareth is truly the Messiah. How do these ancient rites from the Law of Moses, which are also known as the Appointed Times, speak of Jesus? Many people believe that the Jewish holy days are somehow related to Jesus, but the connection is not clear in their minds. The purpose of this video series is to clarify that connection. In Colossians 2:16-17, the Apostle Paul teaches that festivals, new moons, and Sabbath days, (which were defined by the Appointed Times), are shadows of things to come, but their substance belongs to Christ. Thus, we are on the right track when we explore the Appointed Times for the purpose of learning about the Messiah. Accompanied by the video series, this book explains the origin, purpose, and timing of each Appointed Time, which are: The weekly Sabbath day, Passover, The Feast of Unleavened Bread, First Fruits, The Feast of Weeks (Pentecost), The Day of Trumpets (Yom Teruah), The Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur), and The Feast of Booths. But, of far greater importance, it explains how Jesus fulfilled each of the shadows in perfect timing, proving beyond a shadow of doubt that He truly is the Messiah.
