Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rooted in tales both ancient and modern, these vibrant images date from the early twentieth century's Golden Age of Illustration. Edmund Dulac, a prominent artist of the period, created them for books published between 1905 and 1928. Their moods range from the shadowy foreboding of Jane Eyre to the venturesome spirits of Treasure Island and the lighthearted fantasies of A Fairy Garland. Other featured titles include Shakespeare's The Tempest, The Arabian Nights, The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyam, and the fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen. French-born Edmund Dulac arrived in London in 1904, when new advances in the printing process kindled a rage for picture books. Dulac's imaginative powers and technical skills assured the popularity of his book illustrations, many of which were sold separately as fine art paintings. After World War I, when the appetite for deluxe volumes waned, the artist turned his talents in many new directions, including portraiture, theatrical costume and set design, newspaper caricature, and stamp design. This retrospective of his early works is the only such anthology available, offering a singular tribute to an artist from a halcyon era of art inspired by literature.

Book excerpt: ‘A Fairy Garland – Being Fairy Tales from the Old French’ contains a collection of stories, written by Charles Perrault, Madame D’Aulnoy and Count Anthony Hamilton. These individuals were among the first writers to bring magical children’s stories into the literary mainstream, proving to their original seventeenth century readers that such works were important, enjoyable, as well as thought-provoking. The stories in this particular text encompass favourites such as Perrault’s ‘Puss in Boots’ and ‘Riquet with the Tuft’ as well as other less well-known classics such as D’Aulnoy’s ‘The Green Dragon’, ‘Princess Rosetta’ and ‘The Blue Bird’ and Count Antony Hamilton’s dazzling ‘Mayblossom’. This edition of ‘A Fairy Garland’ further contains a set of dazzling coloured illustrations by a true master of the ‘Golden Age'; Edmund Dulac (1882 – 1953). A French artist himself, Dulac had a particular affinity with these Old French tales as well as a rigorously painterly background. The end result was beautifully coloured images which further refined the wonderful stories of Perrault, D’Aulnoy and Hamilton – all presented together in this book. Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of Illustration‘ in children’s literature – a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration. We publish rare and vintage Golden Age illustrated books, in high-quality colour editions, so that the masterful artwork and story-telling can continue to delight both young and old.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edmund Dulac (1882-1953) was a French book illustrator prominent during the so called "Golden Age of Illustration." He spent a very brief period at the Acadmie Julien in Paris in 1904 before moving to London. He then began an association with the Leicester Gallery and Hodder & Stoughton; the gallery would commission paintings from Dulac and then sell the rights to Hodder & Stoughton, who would publish the books while the gallery would sell the paintings. Books produced under this arrangement by Dulac include Stories from the Arabian Nights (1907), an edition of Shakespeare's The Tempest (1908), The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam (1909), Stories from Hans Christian Andersen (1911) and Princess Badoura (1913). During World War I he contributed to relief books, including King Albert's Book, Princess Mary's Gift Book, and, unusually, his own Edmund Dulac's Picture Book for the French Red Cross (1915). After the war, the deluxe edition illustrated book became a rarity and Dulac's career in this field was over. His last such books were Edmund Dulac's Fairy Book (1916), the Tanglewood Tales (1918) and the exquisite The Kingdom of the Pearl (1920).

Book excerpt: ‘The Dreamer of Dreams’ was originally penned by ‘Marie, The Queen of Roumania’, and is presented here, alongside the splendid illustrations of Edmund Dulac. The book starts with the enigmatic phrase, ‘And I dream in my waking dreams, and deep in the dreams of sleep’ – and continues in this fantastical vein. The story tells of a beautiful young artist who dreams a pair of enchanting eyes – and gives up all his work in order to find them. The pervading pathos and melancholy of the story ensures its appeal for both adults and children, with a gentle beauty captured by Dulac’s images. This edition of ‘The Dreamer of Dreams’ contains a set of dazzling illustrations by a true master of the ‘Golden Age’; Edmund Dulac (1882 – 1953). A French artist himself, Dulac had a particular affinity with these old European tales, as well as possessing a rigorously painterly background. This combination ensured the book’s artistic success. Appearing alongside the text, his illustrations further enhance and elucidate the enchanting narrative.
