Book excerpt: Excerpt from Edinburgh Sketches and Memories On a clear day the inhabitants of Edinburgh, by merely ascending the Calton Hill or any other of the familiar heights in or around their city, can have a view of nearly the whole length of their noble estuary, the Firth of Forth. To the right or east, its entrance from the open sea, between the two shires of Fife and Haddington, is marked most conspicuously on the Haddingtonshire side by a distant conical mound, called Berwick Law, rising with peculiar distinctness from the northward curve of land which there bounds the horizon. It is thither that the eye is directed if it would watch the first appearance of steamers and ships from any part of the world that may be bound up the Firth for Edinburgh by its port of Leith. Moving thence westward, the eye can command easily the twenty miles more of the Firth which these ships and steamers have to traverse. The outlines of both shores, though the breadth between them averages twelve miles, may be traced with wonderful sharpness, pleasingly defined as they are by their little bays and promontories, and by the succession of towns and fishing villages with which they are studded. And now, dear reader, I must leave my Sketches in your hands, and as they are written without malice, and, indeed, with the kindest motives, I trust you also will treat them with kindness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Edinburgh Sketches and Miscellanies Ancient author of some repute, one Julius Caesar, in a work with which I made an early but involuntary acquaintance, has finely observed, that all Gaul may be divided into three parts. So deeply did this great truth penetrate my youthful mind, that throughout life I have gone on the principle of dividing every thing that came in my way into three parts, - a fact which shews the superior influence of Classical litera ture over all modern productions. Following this plan, I have arranged the contents of the present volume under three heads. In these Sketches the author cannot lay claim to the wit possessed by the most popular writers of the present day, he having spelt all the words correctly, so far as his knowledge ofcthe rules of orthography enabled him to do so. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Castle Memories Twenty Tales of Edinburgh Castle The pride of Edinburgh is her Castle. These Sketches are written in the hope that they may help to make familiar some of the many stirring episodes in the Castle's long story, knowledge of which intensifies the pride which Scotsmen feel, when they look upon the most famous fortress of their land. In preparing the Sketches many chronicles, well known and little known, have been con sulted; but a special debt is owing to the late james Grant, whose Memorials Of the Castle of Edinburgh, published Sixty years ago and now out of print, first suggested the idea of the present book, and guided the writer to. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English and Scottish Sketches They are intended more particularly for the eyes of such of the writer's own countrymen, as have not been favored with the same opportunities of visiting spots hallowed by so many golden memories and associations. Remembering the delight with which he himself once perused works of this character, he now, in his turn, felt it a kind of duty to endeavor to communicate a similar gratification to others. Some of the scenes here described, have, indeed, been often pointed out before, but they could not well be passed by without notice. Others, he trusts, will be found new: at least, they are such as the writer has not seen described elsewhere. And even. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches in History and Poetry Of the ten papers, which have been named Sketches, contained in this volume, some were given to the public in periodicals by the author himself. Others are now printed for the first time. The date of the earliest is 1860; of the latest 1884, the year before the authors death. Four of them were given as Lectures in the chair of Poetry, Oxford, viz., VI., VII., IX., X. All the subjects, save one, are taken from Scottish History or Poetry, fields in which the writer showed a lifelong and special interest. One or two of the papers may be singled out as but slight in treatment of the subject; yet all of them contain passages which are highly characteristic of the author, and some are worthy of him at his best - as, for example, "The Songs of Scotland before Burns." They thus seem to me to be well deserving of collection and publication in one volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life Jottings of an Old Edinburgh Citizen ET not the reader suppose, as he opens this book, that he is invited to wade through an autobiography. What he will find is but a quilt made up of patches from the shelf Of memory. NO diary has ever been kept to supply copious extracts, such as too Often give anything but light reading, and too Often fail to present true pictures Of the diarist's life. The aim has been to fit together presentable patches, giv ing a blend Of natural colouring, as a well-pieced quilt, though made up Of shreds, may not Offend and possibly may give pleasure, and here and there be informing. If particular patches seem weari some, skipping may give relief. The compiler Of these Jottings would have satisfaction, were it possible for any reader to say that he - and still more were it she - had reached the word F inis without having to resist temptation to turn down pages unread. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Edinburgh: Picturesque Notes, the Silverado Squatters, Memories and Portraits Venice, it has been said, difiers from all other cities in the sentiment which she inspires. The rest may have admirers; she only, a famous fair one, counts lovers in her train. And indeed, even by her kindest friends, Edinburgh is not considered in a similar sense. These like her for many reasons, not any one of which is satisfactory in itself. They like her whimsically, if you will, and somewhat as a virtuoso dotes upon his cabinet. Her attraction is romantic in the narrowest meaning of the term. Beautiful as she is, she is not so much beautiful as interesting. She is pre-eminently Gothic, and all the more so since she has set herself off with some Greek airs, and erected classic temples on her crags. In a word, and above all, she is a curiosity. The Palace of Holyrood has been left aside in the growth of Edinburgh, and stands gray and silent in a workman's quarter and among breweries and gas works. It is a house of many memories. Great people of yore, kings and queens. Buffoons and grave embassadors, played their stately farce for centuries in Holyrood. Wars have been plotted, dancing has lasted deep into the night, murder has been done in its chambers. There Prince Charlie held his phantom levees, and in a very gallant manner represented a fallen dynasty for some hours. Now, all these things of clay are mingled with the dust, the king's crown itself is shown for Sixpence to the vulgar; but the stone palace has outlived these changes. For fifty weeks together, it is no more than a show for tourists and a museum of old furniture. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine, Vol. 167: January-June, 1900 The pictures of the past, my scattered memories of the war path, come up singly, fix them selves upon my sight vividly as things very real and present, and then pass, giving place to others. Let me etch them in, each as it comes. Taken to gether they should make some thing like a connected whole, something like the broad view of those days of trouble as it appears to my mind's eye. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Virginibus Puerisque Memories and Portraits Speare's characters are what we call marrying men. Mercutio, as he was own cousin to Benedick and Biron, would have come to the same end in the long run. Even Iago had a wife, and, what is far stranger, he was jealous. People like Jacques and the F001 in Lear, although we can hardly imagine they would ever marry, kept single out of a cynical humour or for a broken heart, and not, as we do nowadays, from a spirit of incredulity and preference for the single state. For that matter, if you turn to George Sand's French version of As You Like It (and I think I can promise you will like it but little), you will find Jacques marries Ce lia just as Orlando marries Rosalind. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Edinburgh and District Water Supply: A Historical Sketch The other etchings are from photographs taken by Mr. Alexander Leslie, ce. These illustrations represent the times, the men and their works; and it will not be deemed improper that the portraits of the professional engineers who successively carried through the various important works connected with the water enterprise should find a place in these pages. The portraits of the three Chief Magistrates Of the period when the Water Trust was created, find a place in the book; and it was considered desirable that the por trait of the present Statutory Chairman of the Trust, as well as the two other Conveners of Committees, should likewise appear in the volume. I early resolved to ask the editor of the Scotsman newspaper for his permission to publish the more historical part of the work in the columns of that influential journal. My Object in doing so, was to get the benefit Of a wide criticism, wherein I might find information, which I did not at the time possess, for the perfecting of my work. In this I have not been disappointed. My best thanks are therefore due to the Scotsman for its indulgence and help in this respect.
