Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Edinburgh Past and Present The Picts and other Celtic tribes did not allow the Romans to possess their territory in peace. Until they withdrew entirely from the island, guerilla warfare was incessant. When the Romans retired, the Saxons advanced, and added the whole lowlands of Scotland, from the Tweed to the Forth - what had been the Roman province of Valentia - to their kingdom of Northumbria. About 617 ad, Edwin of Deira fortified the rock more elaborately than before, and gave his name to it, and to the burgh. Seventy years later, the Picts recovered possession, but were again beaten, and the place held by the Northumbrian Saxons till 956, when it finally became a part of Scotland. Edinburgh and its Castle were cradled in warfare, and the period in modern times during which they have been free from war's alarms is a very small epoch of their dual life. Book excerpt: The late poet laureate, Sir John Betjeman, said that Edinburgh was the most beautiful city in Europe. Like some other great cities it is set on seven hills. But only one of these, Rome, rivals Edinburgh in matching the beauty of its setting with the stateliness of its buildings. Edinbrugh, too, provides the backdrop to much of the dark drama of the Scottish past, from Mary Queen of Scots to Bonnie Prince Charlie and beyond. Michael Fry, who has lived and worked there for nearly forty years, provides a compellingly readable account of this great city, from the earliest times to the present, balancing Edinburgh's cultural, political and social history, and painting a vivid portrait of a city - that like Stevenson's Dr Jekyll - is both dark and light, both dark and light, both 'Auld Reekie' and 'Athens of the North'. ‘Impressive ... in the style of Peter Ackroyd’s history of London’ Magnus Linklator, Spectator 'No one interested in the history of Edinburgh, and indeed Scotland, should be without it’ Allan Massie,Scotsman

Book Synopsis India In Edinburgh by : Roger Jeffery

Download or read book India In Edinburgh written by Roger Jeffery and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-28 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roger Jeffery in this book has brought together 10 original, well-researched and well-written essays which bring to life the presence of India in the capital city of Scotland, Edinburgh. On the surface Edinburgh is a purely Scottish city: its ‘India’ past is not easily visible. Yet, from the late 17th century onwards, many of Edinburgh’s young men and women were drawn to India. The city received back money and knowledge, sculpture and paintings, botanical specimens and even skulls! Colonel James Skinner, well-known for establishing Skinner’s Horse, brought his sons to Edinburgh for their schooling. Though Sir Walter Scott visited India only in his imagination (and tried to stop his own sons going there) he crafted a dashing India tale involving Tipu Sultan. The money from India helped create Edinburgh’s New Town, Edinburgh’s internationally-renowned schools (whose former pupils careers ranged from tea-planters to Viceroys) and people who came to Edinburgh from India established Edinburgh’s second women’s medical college. There are many such hidden stories of Edinburgh’s India connections. In this path-breaking book they are brought to life, using novel approaches to look at Edinburgh’s past, to see it as an imperial city, a city for which India held a special place. Focusing on the interactions between individual lives, social networks and financial, material, cultural and social flows, leading experts from Edinburgh’s history provide fascinating detail on how Edinburgh’s links to India were formed and transformed.
