With very few exceptions, I have been responsible for the treatment of all Of these cases. In any comparison of the cases in the present series with those Of past epidemics the great difference in age and sex incidence must always be kept in mind. All my cases occurred in adults, and with few exceptions in adult males who, a short time previously, had passed a medical examination as to their fitness for service with His Majesty's Forces. Perhaps, on the whole, less objection Can be raised to the name cerebro-spinal fever than to most that have been employed. The disease is certainly a general infection, and in the great majority Of cases the most obvious symptoms are those due to infection Of the central nervous system and its covering membranes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Edinburgh Medical Journal, Vol. 20: Combining the Monthly Journal of Medicine and the Edinburgh Medical and Surgical Journal; July to December 1874 The subcutaneous injection of three grains of bromal hydrate produces the followin effects on a rabbit of three or four pounds weight. During the first three or four minutes, nothing is observed. The animal then becomes restless, and moves about quickly; rubs its nose with its fore-feet; the vessels in the ear become dilated and full of blood; the pupil contracts quickly, but at an equal rate, from its original diameter before injection of 6 mm. Or 7 mm. To 1 mm. - that is, to its maximum amount of contraction; in one or two minutes more, the bloodvessels of the conjunctiva, more especially on the inner surface of the lids, are injected, and there is great excess of lachrymal secretion; the mucous membrane of the mouth and nostrils also becomes red, and a profuse secretion pours from the mouth. The amount of secretion is often so great as to endanger the life of the animal from suffocation, and it may be collected easily in a watch-glass. It is a whitish milky fluid to the naked eye. The microscope (x 250 or 300) shows numerous refractive globules of various sizes resembling globules in milk. There are no epithelial or salivary cells. The respirations become gradually more rapid until they are nearly double their normal amount. The cardiac pulsations are in the first instance diminished in number, afterwards they become more rapid, and they may become double the normal number. Towards the period of death, they are much reduced both in number and in force. The animal then lies flat on its abdomen and chest, with the fore and hind limbs in spread-eagle fashion. There is paralysis of both fore and hind extremities. There is no hyperaesthesia so far as can be deter mined by pinching, or by weak induction currents. In a few minutes more, the head sinks on the table, the respirations become slower and more laboured, the heart beats less rapidly and more feebly; muscular twitchings are seen, and after a few clonic spasms, the animal dies - frequently in a state of opisthotonos. This is a general picture of the action of a minimum lethal dose which kills in from one to two hours. With a larger dose, the symptoms are more intense. The animal becomes much excited, the pupil contracts with great rapidity to its smallest diameter, and after screaming for a few seconds as if in great pain, it dies in convul sions. With a smaller dose, the phenomena just noticed follow consecutively, but the symptoms are less acute, and after a period of stupor, the rabbit may recover. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Edinburgh Medical Journal, 1922, Vol. 28 In this issue of the Journal we commence the serial publication of the Transactions of the Medico-Chirurgical Society of Edinburgh and of the Edinburgh Obstetrical Society. Month by month our subscribers, including the members of the Societies, will receive with the Journal an instalment of the proceedings of each Society. To admit of the series of "Transactions" that have been issued by both these Societies over a long period of years being uninterrupted, arrangements have been made by which the sections of the Journal devoted to the proceedings of each Society can be detached and bound as a separate volume at the end of each year. For this purpose a separate title-page and other preliminary matter, together with an index, will be provided to the members of each Society, and we shall supply at the current market price a cloth case for binding the "Transactions" uniform with the preceding volumes. Every effort will be made to secure that monthly instalments include a complete report of the transactions of each meeting, but it may be well to point out to our readers that, for technical reasons, the provision made for binding may occasionally involve part of the proceedings of a meeting being carried over to the next number of the Journal. It is with deep regret we record the death of Dr William Paterson of Leith on 13th November last. Born and brought up as so many of the doctors and ministers Scotland have been in a rural parish (his parents resided at Carnwath, in the Upper Ward of Lanarkshire), he finished his school education in Edinburgh, and entered an Insurance Office to begin a business life.
