Book Synopsis The Ascetic Self by : Gavin D. Flood
Download or read book The Ascetic Self written by Gavin D. Flood and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-11-25 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2004 book is about the ascetic self in the scriptural religions of Christianity, Buddhism and Hinduism. The author claims that asceticism can be understood as the internalisation of tradition, the shaping of the narrative of a life in accordance with the narrative of tradition that might be seen as the performance of the memory of tradition. Such a performance contains an ambiguity or distance between the general intention to eradicate the will, or in some sense to erase the self, and the affirmation of will in ascetic performance such as weakening the body through fasting. Asceticism must therefore be seen in the context of ritual. The book also offers a paradigm for comparative religion more generally, one that avoids the inadequate choices of either examining religions through overarching categories on the one hand and the abandoning of any comparative endeavour that focuses purely on area-specific study on the other.
Book Synopsis Distance Education by : David Sewart
Download or read book Distance Education written by David Sewart and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-24 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Distance education, for long the Cinderella of the educational spectrum, had emerged in the 1970s and early 1980s as a valued component of many national educational systems in both developed and developing countries. The foundation of the Open Universities, developments in communications technology and in audio-, video- and computer-based learning, a new sophistication in the design of print-based materials and better support systems for the student learning at a distance had all contributed to the availability and quality of distance education programmes. Originally published in 1988, this book chronicles this great change in distance education. It presents the best writings on the subject published during the previous ten years. The articles selected for this volume provided a new scholarly basis for the theory and practice of distance education. The editors have brought together contributions from many countries and present authoritative introductions to each of the nine sections. This book provided those in both developed and developing countries with a guideline to one of the most rapidly expanding areas of education at the time.
Book Synopsis The Jazz of Physics by : Stephon Alexander
Download or read book The Jazz of Physics written by Stephon Alexander and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2016-04-26 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A spectacular musical and scientific journey from the Bronx to the cosmic horizon that reveals the astonishing links between jazz, science, Einstein, and Coltrane More than fifty years ago, John Coltrane drew the twelve musical notes in a circle and connected them by straight lines, forming a five-pointed star. Inspired by Einstein, Coltrane put physics and geometry at the core of his music. Physicist and jazz musician Stephon Alexander follows suit, using jazz to answer physics' most vexing questions about the past and future of the universe. Following the great minds that first drew the links between music and physics-a list including Pythagoras, Kepler, Newton, Einstein, and Rakim — The Jazz of Physics reveals that the ancient poetic idea of the "Music of the Spheres," taken seriously, clarifies confounding issues in physics. The Jazz of Physics will fascinate and inspire anyone interested in the mysteries of our universe, music, and life itself.

Book Synopsis Online Education by : Linda M. Harasim
Download or read book Online Education written by Linda M. Harasim and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1990-01-19 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written for educators and education professionals, this groundbreaking volume offers a comprehensive introduction to educational computer-mediated communication (CMC). As editor Linda Harasim notes at the outset, although online education already exists as a field of practice, there is a critical need now to build a research discipline and knowledge base to guide research developments in the field. Online Education fills this need by presenting theoretical frameworks, design paradigms, and research methodologies for analyzing and shaping this new field of educational activity. In one volume, the contributors provide a range of perspectives and approaches for understanding the educational applications of such innovations as electronic mail and computer conferencing networks. The final chapter provides an extensive bibliography, making this an extremely valuable resource for researchers, developers, and educators working on educational CMC. Divided into three sections, the chapters address the questions posed by educational CMC from the perspectives of theory, design, and methodology in turn. Each contribution is written by one of the leading theoreticians or practitioners in the field and, although the volume represents a rich diversity of approaches, common themes link the chapters. The contributors emphasize that online education is a new environment with new attributes that requires new approaches to understand, design, and implement it. They focus particular attention on the essentially group or socially interactive nature of the online educational environment as the conceptual basis for research and design and explore the augmented environment that the computer provides for educational activity. Finally, each looks at fundamental practical issues: What are the effective uses of these new computer-mediated communication media? Can we simply transfer existing conventional instructional practices or do we need to develop a new set of practices better suited to the new tools?
