Book excerpt: Discrete mathematics and theoretical computer science are closely linked research areas with strong impacts on applications and various other scientific disciplines. Both fields deeply cross fertilize each other. One of the persons who particularly contributed to building bridges between these and many other areas is László Lovász, a scholar whose outstanding scientific work has defined and shaped many research directions in the last 40 years. A number of friends and colleagues, all top authorities in their fields of expertise and all invited plenary speakers at one of two conferences in August 2008 in Hungary, both celebrating Lovász’s 60th birthday, have contributed their latest research papers to this volume. This collection of articles offers an excellent view on the state of combinatorics and related topics and will be of interest for experienced specialists as well as young researchers.

Book excerpt: Brooks' Theorem (1941) is one of the most famous and fundamental theorems in graph theory -- it is mentioned/treated in all general monographs on graph theory. It has sparked research in several directions. This book presents a comprehensive overview of this development and see it in context. It describes results, both early and recent, and explains relations: the various proofs, the many extensions and similar results for other graph parameters. It serves as a valuable reference to a wealth of information, now scattered in journals, proceedings and dissertations. The reader gets easy access to this wealth of information in comprehensive form, including best known proofs of the results described. Each chapter ends in a note section with historical remarks, comments and further results. The book is also suitable for graduate courses in graph theory and includes exercises. The book is intended for readers wanting to dig deeper into graph coloring theory than what is possible in the existing book literature. There is a comprehensive list of references to original sources.

Book excerpt: This book provides an introduction to hypergraphs, its aim being to overcome the lack of recent manuscripts on this theory. In the literature hypergraphs have many other names such as set systems and families of sets. This work presents the theory of hypergraphs in its most original aspects, while also introducing and assessing the latest concepts on hypergraphs. The variety of topics, their originality and novelty are intended to help readers better understand the hypergraphs in all their diversity in order to perceive their value and power as mathematical tools. This book will be a great asset to upper-level undergraduate and graduate students in computer science and mathematics. It has been the subject of an annual Master's course for many years, making it also ideally suited to Master's students in computer science, mathematics, bioinformatics, engineering, chemistry, and many other fields. It will also benefit scientists, engineers and anyone else who wants to understand hypergraphs theory.

Book excerpt: The study of directed graphs (digraphs) has developed enormously over recent decades, yet the results are rather scattered across the journal literature. This is the first book to present a unified and comprehensive survey of the subject. In addition to covering the theoretical aspects, the authors discuss a large number of applications and their generalizations to topics such as the traveling salesman problem, project scheduling, genetics, network connectivity, and sparse matrices. Numerous exercises are included. For all graduate students, researchers and professionals interested in graph theory and its applications, this book will be essential reading.

It is based on computational mathematics, which is presented here in a comprehensive handbook. From the existing rich repertoire of mathematical theories and methods, the fundamentals of engineering computation are here presented in a coherent fashion. They are brought into a suitable order for specific engineering purposes, and their significance for typical applications shown. The relevant definitions, notations and theories are presented in a durable form which is independent of the fast development of information and communication technology.

Book excerpt: The area of graph grammars is theoretically attractive and well motivated byvarious applications. More than 20 years ago, the concept of graph grammars was introduced by A. Rosenfeld as a formulation of some problems in pattern recognition and image processing, as well as by H.J. Schneider as a method for data type specification. Within graph-grammar theory one maydistinguish the set-theoretical approach, the algebraic approach, and the logical approach. These approaches differ in the method in which graph replacement is described. Specific approaches, node replacement and hyperedge replacement, concern the basic units of a hypergraph, nodes and hyperedges. This monograph is mainly concerned with the hyperedge-replacement approach. Hyperedge-replacement grammars are introduced as a device for generating hypergraph languages including graph languages and string languages. The concept combines a context-free rewriting with a comparatively large generative power. The volume includes a foreword by H. Ehrig.

This book was released on 2007 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together two emerging research areas: synchronization in coupled nonlinear systems and complex networks, and study conditions under which a complex network of dynamical systems synchronizes. While there are many texts that study synchronization in chaotic systems or properties of complex networks, there are few texts that consider the intersection of these two very active and interdisciplinary research areas. The main theme of this book is that synchronization conditions can be related to graph theoretical properties of the underlying coupling topology. The book introduces ideas from systems theory, linear algebra and graph theory and the synergy between them that are necessary to derive synchronization conditions. Many of the results, which have been obtained fairly recently and have until now not appeared in textbook form, are presented with complete proofs. This text is suitable for graduate-level study or for researchers who would like to be better acquainted with the latest research in this area. Sample Chapter(s). Chapter 1: Introduction (76 KB). Contents: Graphs, Networks, Laplacian Matrices and Algebraic Connectivity; Graph Models; Synchronization in Networks of Nonlinear Continuous-Time Dynamical Systems; Synchronization in Networks of Coupled Discrete-Time Systems; Synchronization in Network of Systems with Linear Dynamics; Agreement and Consensus Problems in Groups of Interacting Agents. Readership: Graduate students and researchers in physics, applied mathematics and engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current exponential growth in graph data has forced a shift to parallel computing for executing graph algorithms. Implementing parallel graph algorithms and achieving good parallel performance have proven difficult. This book addresses these challenges by exploiting the well-known duality between a canonical representation of graphs as abstract collections of vertices and edges and a sparse adjacency matrix representation. This linear algebraic approach is widely accessible to scientists and engineers who may not be formally trained in computer science. The authors show how to leverage existing parallel matrix computation techniques and the large amount of software infrastructure that exists for these computations to implement efficient and scalable parallel graph algorithms. The benefits of this approach are reduced algorithmic complexity, ease of implementation, and improved performance.
