Her sheriff cousin hears of eerie incidents in town that spell trouble for all of Estonoa. Now Deb takes a chance on digging out the weird before word gets out. Can she crack the case before it's too late for everyone? Also available in the collection Investigations Beyond Belief An excerpt from An Eddy of the Unexplained: When a Good Place Turns Bad "Strange how?" Deb said, refusing to throw out suggestions for Terri to shoot down. Partly because she enjoyed the surprise too much. "This one really is hard to put into words, even for me," Terri said, frowning and looking serious for a change. "People say they feel...threatened lately. Even people who've been hiking that trail since it opened four years ago. They swear their skin crawls, like they're being watched. Not just people, either. Their dogs get freaked out and don't even want to walk through there. It's strong enough that several people have called us in." "Did you take police dogs out there?" Annie said. "To see how they react?" "We did, or we tried to. These aren't fresh-out-of-training dogs or officers, but the dogs refused to get within twenty feet of the eddy. They didn't bark or alert. They simply stopped walking."

Book excerpt: The goal of the Institute of Medicine's Council on Health Care Technology is to promote the development and application of technology assessment in health and medicine. Among the activities cited in the congressional charge that provided for its formation, the council is to "identify needs in the assessment of health care technology." Early in its deliberations, the council decided to expand its charge to identify priority clinical conditions as well as medical technologies and practices. The process for setting assessment priorities demonstrated in this pilot study and the initial set of 20 priority assessment areas selected are in response to this expanded charge. The priority-setting group decided to undertake a pilot effort that would set a framework for national priority-setting, outline national priority-setting criteria, and use a consensus process to identify a preliminary list of priority clinical conditions and medical technologies. The priority-setting approach demonstrated here relies upon explicit criteria that are applicable at the national level and reflect the diverse needs of patients, clinicians, researchers payers, health facility managers, and policymakers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study of Christian Science and the culture in which it arose, Amy B. Voorhees emphasizes Mary Baker Eddy's foundational religious text, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. Assessing the experiences of everyday adherents after Science and Health's appearance in 1875, Voorhees shows how Christian Science developed a dialogue with both mainstream and alternative Christian theologies. Viewing God's benevolent allness as able to heal human afflictions through prayer, Christian Science emerged as an anti-mesmeric, restorationist form of Christianity that interpreted the Bible and approached emerging modern medicine on its own terms. Voorhees traces a surprising story of religious origins, cultural conversations, and controversies. She contextualizes Christian Science within a wide swath of cultural and religious movements, showing how Eddy and her followers interacted regularly with Baptists, Methodists, Congregationalists, Catholics, Jews, New Thought adherents, agnostics, and Theosophists. Influences flowed in both directions, but Voorhees argues that Christian Science was distinct not only organizationally, as scholars have long viewed it, but also theologically, a singular expression of Christianity engaging modernity with an innovative, healing rationale.

Book excerpt: This controversial biography of the founder of the Christian Science church was serialized in McClure's Magazine in 1907-8 and published as a book the next year. It disappeared almost overnight and has been difficult to find ever since. Although a Canadian mewspaperwoman named Georgine Milmine collected the material and was credited as the author, The Life Of Mary Baker G. Eddy was actually written by Willa Cather, an editor at McClure's at that time. In his introduction to this Bison Book edition, David Stouck reveals new evidence of Cather's authorship of The Life of Mary Baker G. Eddy. He discusses her fidelity to facts and her concern with psychology and philosophy that would take creative form later on. Indeed, this biography contains "some of the finest portrait sketches and reflections on human nature that Willa Cather would ever write."
