Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before sobriety. Before stability. Before Madonna went brunette again. As a closeted, suburbs-bred grad student by day, hummus-slinging, hard-partying twentysomething by night in turn-of-the-millennium New York, Ryan Heath is in a state of arrested development. Grappling with his sense of self after a series of soul-searing events - discovering a live-in boyfriend's sordid double life, a decadent weekend binge, the OD of a loved one - Ryan turns to these pages to confess his extreme clubbing, blackout drinking, reckless substance abuse, hooking up with guys and girls ... and how this cocktail of crazy leads to both embracing his sexuality and achieving sobriety. This humorous, poignant memoir touches upon the universal mission for self-respect and joy and stars a cast of colorful personalities as they bounce around legendary NYC nightlife venues like Limelight, Twilo, and Roxy in a post-AIDS, pre-9/11 sliver of time littered with designer drugs and soundtracked by classic house club anthems.

Book excerpt: This is an amazing story of a strong woman who has battled drugs up until now, as even when I stopped using drugs, Ive been harassed to affect me in a way, so when I told my story, they hoped Id be off key. This is one of the three books. My first one is just the worst big stories Ive been through, but theres so much more. I want to inspire as many people to tell their story. Lift the weight off your shoulders just as mine went light as soon as I told my family, who have supported me and been brilliant, especially my cousin, Lola, Thank you! And so to the public, let me be that voice for you, as you can even write to me. I care, and if I can help you, rich or poor, I dont care. Tell me, and if I can help, I will. I have abilities that can be useful, and remember, I turned my life around. You can too. Enjoy!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tom Rastrelli is a survivor of clergy-perpetrated sexual abuse who then became a priest in the early days of the Catholic Church’s ongoing scandals. Confessions of a Gay Priest divulges the clandestine inner workings of the seminary, providing an intimate and unapologetic look into the psychosexual and spiritual dynamics of celibacy and lays bare the “formation” system that perpetuates the cycle of abuse and cover-up that continues today. Under the guidance of a charismatic college campus minister, Rastrelli sought to reconcile his homosexuality and childhood sexual abuse. When he felt called to the priesthood, Rastrelli began the process of “priestly discernment.” Priests welcomed him into a confusing clerical culture where public displays of piety, celibacy, and homophobia masked a closeted underworld in which elder priests preyed upon young recruits. From there he ventured deeper into the seminary system seeking healing, hoping to help others, and striving not to live a double life. Trained to treat sexuality like an addiction, he and his brother seminarians lived in a world of cliques, competition, self-loathing, alcohol, hidden crushes, and closeted sex. Ultimately, the “formation” intended to make Rastrelli a compliant priest helped to liberate him.

Book excerpt: In Skipping Towards Gomorrah, Dan Savage eviscerates the right-wing conservatives as he commits each of the Seven Deadly Sins himself (or tries to) and finds those everyday Americans who take particular delight in their sinful pursuits. Among them: Greed: Gamblers reveal secrets behind outrageous fortune. Lust: "We're swingers!"-you won't believe who's doing it. Anger: Texans shoot off some rounds and then listen to Dan fire off on his own about guns, gun control, and the Second Amendment. Combine a unique history of the Seven Deadly Sins, a new interpretation of the biblical stories of Sodom and Gomorrah, and enough Bill Bennett, Robert Bork, Pat Buchanan, Dr. Laura, and Bill O'Reilly bashing to more than make up for their incessant carping, and you've got the most provocative book of the fall.

Turnipseed went through an identity crisis with homosexuality and this is the story leading up to his coming out. At the tender age of six, Mark Turnipseed received what he felt was a clear and devastating message: it isn't okay to like other boys, and if you do, you're bound for hell. His confusion and self-hatred made him determined to become the boy he believed he was supposed to be, but in attempting to live a lie, he descended into a hell of his own making. In this unflinchingly honest debut memoir, Mark takes us on a harrowing journey as he bounces off the restrictive walls of his closet and plunges into the darkness of drug and alcohol addiction, prostitution, and suicide attempts. He bravely lets us inside the raw, tragic mind of an addict and sexual trauma survivor whose self-denial threatens to destroy him and everyone who loves him. After surviving numerous relapses, Mark finally finds a surprising key to saving his own life. While training for a triathlon, he embraces a fresh commitment to sober strategies that lead to good health, self-acceptance, and authenticity-offering hope for all who struggle with the shame and self-hatred that fuel addictions. While showing that recovery is possible even for those who struggle for years to reach sobriety, My Suicide Race also unveils the often-unseen links between addiction, suicidal ideation, and the trauma of coming out.

Book excerpt: From bestselling author of The Book of Delights and award-winning poet, a book of lyrical mini-essays celebrating the everyday that will inspire readers to rediscover the joys in the world around us. In Ross Gay’s new collection of small, daily wonders, again written over the course of a year, one of America’s most original voices continues his ongoing investigation of delight. For Gay, what delights us is what connects us, what gives us meaning, from the joy of hearing a nostalgic song blasting from a passing car to the pleasure of refusing the “nefarious” scannable QR code menus, from the tiny dog he fell hard for to his mother baking a dozen kinds of cookies for her grandchildren. As always, Gay revels in the natural world—sweet potatoes being harvested, a hummingbird carousing in the beebalm, a sunflower growing out of a wall around the cemetery, the shared bounty from a neighbor’s fig tree—and the trillion mysterious ways this glorious earth delights us. The Book of (More) Delights is a volume to savor and share.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Outlines a mystical theology and experience of the sacred founded on the absence of god. Originally published in 1943, Inner Experience is the single most significant work by one of the twentieth century’s most influential writers. It outlines a mystical theology and experience of the sacred founded on the absence of god. Bataille calls Inner Experience a “narrative of despair,” but also describes it as a book wherein “profundity and passion go tenderly hand in hand.” Herein, he says, “The mind moves in a strange world where anguish and ecstasy take shape.” Bataille’s search for experience begins where religion, philosophy, science, and literature leave off, where doctrines, dogmas, methods, and the arts collapse. His method of meditation, outlined and documented here, commingles horror and delight. Laughter, intoxication, eroticism, poetry, and sacrifice are pursued not as ends in and of themselves but as means of access to a sovereign realm of inner experience. This new translation is the first to include Method of Meditation and Post-Scriptum 1953, the supplementary texts Bataille added to create the first volume of his Summa Atheologica. This edition also offers the full notes and annotations from the French edition of Bataille’s Oeuvres Complètes, along with an incisive introductory essay by Stuart Kendall that situates the work historically, biographically, and philosophically.

Book excerpt: The War Within By: Cornelius Harris Accounting day-to-day encounters with the outside environment set Cornelius along a path of journal writing, encouraging the idea to make The War Within a memoir. The completion of his book details being affected emotionally, psychologically and spiritually. He articulates how profoundly his pain and suffering affected him, pulling out emotions, that he beautifully articulates concerning his social environment and how it shaped him. During this process, he uses the theme of religion/spirituality as a tool to enlighten him about the nature of his existence and this interplay with the supernal universe, as he accounts his psychic impressions, that he refers as God, or spirit guides, sent to help him understand who he is as a hurt Black, gay man. Inter-generational healing becomes crucial in understanding his family dynamic, by using his rejection, shame, and trauma as an impetus for self-revelation. He deals with the struggle of understanding his sexual identity around the context of a heteronormative society, and how he endured unbearable discrimination, and stigmatization from a ruthless society. This drove him in the door of Alcoholics Anonymous, a source he uses as strength to also heal from being marginalized in his own community. By reconciling those fractured social networks that had once hindered him from embarking on self-discovery, he is able to find a path to discover himself as a Black, gay, veteran, living within the cultural milieu of a American narrative that tells a different, less noble story of who he is expected to be, by daring to break historical stereotypes and living his own truth.

Book excerpt: There’s only one place Joanna Kane can tell it like it is. Her journal: I hate Terri Rubin, the woman I’m in love with. She called and told me she’s dating a woman named Sonya. I hate this Sonya and I hate Terri and I hate myself because I was never like this in my life. Do you know what it’s like to come out when you’re in your forties, having menopausal symptoms, for God’s sake, and then fall madly in love with someone? All of a sudden you’re in adolescencefor the first time. You don’t even recognize yourself. My whole adult life I was this cool, collected writer, strutting around in jeans and leather jacket, advising friends and siblings about their relationships, being a devoted daughter and a responsible professional person and a good citizen, and then one day I woke up and realized I was gay, and then this sassy woman walked into my life and I fell in love at first sight, after spending my life thinking that never really happened and only watching West Side Story because of the gangs. And now I’ve become the kind of person I used to make fun of, who becomes hysterical because her beloved tells her she’s dating some woman named Sonya who has an apothecary store in Bethesda, Maryland. I’m sick of being in this endless rut, I’m sick of Cleveland, and I’m thinking of moving to Washington, DC to be with Terri Rubin who I hate.
