Download or read book Commodity Payments, Farm Business Survival, and Farm Size Growth written by Nigel David Key and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last 25 years, U.S. crop farms have steadily declined in number and grown in average size, as production has shifted to larger operations. Larger farms tend to receive more commodity program payments because most payments are tied to a farm's current or historical production, but whether payments have contributed to farm growth is uncertain. This study uses farm-level data from the census of agriculture to determine whether there is a statistical relationship between farm commodity program payments and greater concentration in production. The analysis indicates that, at the regional level, higher commodity program payments per acre are associated with subsequent farm growth. Also, higher payments per acre are associated with higher rates of farm survival and growth.

Book excerpt: The book entitled Economics of Agricultural Production and Farm Management deals with two important aspects of agriculture and applied economics i.e. agricultural production economics and farm management. The book is divided into 14 chapters. The first ten chapters deal with farm management and the other four chapters deal with agricultural production economics. In farm management, introduction, characteristics of farming as a business, principles of farm management, types and systems of farming, farm planning and budgeting, farm business analysis, cost concepts, farm layout, risk and uncertainty and linear programming have been covered. In agricultural production economics the meaning, definition, nature and scope, basic terms and concepts, relationships between factor-product, factor-factor and product-product are covered with figures and data. It covers both fundamental and applied aspects. The book has been written in simple and easy language. It is intended to serve as a basis for a course in production economics and farm management and attempts at satisfying a need of under-graduate students of agriculture and post-graduate students of agricultural economics. It is hoped that the book will be worthwhile to teachers, students, researchers, professionals, farmers etc.

Book excerpt: Persistent problems with poverty, rapid population growth and malnutrition in many developing countries are among the most serious issues facing the world today. This book examines the causes, severity and effects of these problems, as well as potential solutions. The authors consider the implications of globalization of goods, services and capital for agriculture, poverty and the environment; and identify linkages in the world food system, stressing how agricultural and economic situations in poor countries affect industrialized nations and vice versa. Focusing on the role that agriculture can play in improving economic and nutritional wellbeing and how that role might be enhanced, this book is essential reading.
