The sanctity Of the home has centred chiefly about the kitchen stove; the boys have fled from it with a speed that does credit to their intelligence, nor can they by any present means be lured back again. This and a thousand other things have resulted from the system to which women cling, clamoring Objections at any attempt to set their feet on more solid ground. Not till the domestic service question became so des perate a complication that wise women opened their eyes and foolish ones protested louder than ever did the real nature Of the problem begin to dawn. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Household Management N the study of Economics there are two great divisions - production and consumption. Until within a few years, by far the lion's share of time and study has been given to the first of these divisions. It has been deemed sufficient for the securing of happi ness and prosperity to a people to point out how the greatest degree of efficiency in producing wealth might be obtained. The manner in which that wealth was expended was considered less important. Recently a decided change has taken place. A conviction has been growing, especially among students or economics, of the equal importance of the other division, which covers the use made of the money after it has been acquired. This emphasizes the important place of the home in Economics as will be realized by those who consider how largely the home is the center of the consumption of wealth. Southern households spent less for purchased food than those in other regions. However, they used more home-produced food (in terms of value) than families in the Northeast and West and about the same amount as those in the North Central Region. Expenditures for meals and snacks away from home in the South were slightly lower than in the North Central Region and considerably lower than in the other two regions. The South differed from the other regions in food used per person about the same as in food used per household. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Of Work and Wealth: A Summary of Economics The first every-day duty of a man is to earn his own living. This he must do by Work, which obtains from Nature the physical basis of life and by saving and exchange produces Wealth. With this business of Work and Wealth, Economics has to do. Some writers define it as the science of Production, others as the science of Wealth, others as the science of Exchange. It may be called also the science of Gain, because the purpose and result of all production and exchange, the end of economic man, is gain. The name Economics (from 02x00, the house, and to manage or give law) means household management, or in the wider sense, the management of the Common wealth, as the good 'old phrase calls the State. For the State is in deed founded on homes it is the family which is the economic unit. A man takes to himself a wife, who may or may not earn, and begets children; it is What all in the home earn, less what all spend, that leaves wealth 3 these hostages to fortune, in Bacon's phrase, anchor a man's economic position in the home. It is in the wider sense, as relating to the Commonwealth, that Economics has usually been known as Political Economy. Book excerpt: The notion of optimum population has attracted the attention of economists ever since economics was made a science. Roots can be traced back to ancient Greece. The topic has recently found rising interest among population economists and demographers. The economic concept of optimum population seeks to define the population size, which maximizes a welfare criterion of the society. The purpose of this book is to outline this concept from a micro and macro perspective and to link it with issues of technical progress, social security, limited resources and migration. It treats fertility endogenously and studies its welfare and policy implications. The emphasis is on a rigorous theoretical treatment of the subject using the modern growth and welfare theory as well as the new classical micro model of the family.

Book excerpt: Household and Economy: Welfare Economics of Endogenous Fertility deals with welfare economics and the socially optimal population size, as well as the social consequences of individual choice with respect to family size within each generation. The general equilibrium implications of endogenous fertility for a number of issues of population policy are discussed. In addition to their own consumption, the number of children and the utility of each child is assumed to enter the utility function of the parents. Comprised of 10 chapters, this volume begins with a review of social welfare criteria for optimal population size and the static theory of optimal population size, optimal population growth with exogenous fertility, and the theory of endogenous fertility. The reader is then introduced to the basic principles of welfare economics and the economics of externalities, followed by a summary of the traditional theory of household behavior. Subsequent chapters focus on optimal population size according to various social welfare criteria; real and potential externalities generated by the endogeneity of fertility; and the principal alternative reason for having children: to transfer resources from the present to support the future consumption of parents in old age. The book concludes by assessing the implications of endogenous fertility for within-generation income distribution policies and reflecting on the directions in which future research may be fruitful. This monograph will be of value to economists, social scientists, students of welfare economics, and those who wish to understand the contribution of economic analysis to an improved understanding of population policy.
