Book Synopsis Sweden and the 'Third Way' by : Philip Whyman
Download or read book Sweden and the 'Third Way' written by Philip Whyman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2003. The creation of a 'Third Way' between unfettered capitalism and old-style Keynesian-corporatist forms of social democracy has become the driving force behind the policy programmes of many left-of-centre political parties in the industrialised nations of the world today. Sweden and the 'Third Way' critically evaluates this 'new' social democracy by examining the profound shift in Swedish political economy from being the prototype old-style social democracy towards the 'Third Way' synthesis of neo-liberalism and elements of traditional social democracy. Philip Whyman evaluates internal and external challenges to Swedish macroeconomic policy - including globalisation, European integration, post-Fordist technological change and the relative empowerment of capital - to discover the extent to which national economic autonomy is constrained. Furthermore, he considers the plausibility of revising the core elements of the traditional 'Swedish Model' as an alternative to the prevailing macroeconomic platform.

Book Synopsis Globalisation and Enlargement of the European Union by : Andreas Bieler
Download or read book Globalisation and Enlargement of the European Union written by Andreas Bieler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-11-01 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On January 1 1995, Austria and Sweden joined the European Union (EU). This book examines why these two countries joined at such a moment and studies their accession against the structural background of globalization. In this cutting-edge analysis, Andreas Bieler argues that conventional neo-functionalist and intergovernmentalist theories fail to explain such structural change as they take existing power structures as given. Therefore, he develops a neo-Gramscian perspective as an alternative approach to European integration.
Book Synopsis The Economics and Policies of Integration — a Finnish Perspective by : Kari Alho
Download or read book The Economics and Policies of Integration — a Finnish Perspective written by Kari Alho and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: European integration has come a long way since the fIrst steps in the aftermath of the Second World War. At that time, the neutral European countries chose to stay outside the European Economic Community. Those countries that wanted less ambitious cooperation formed the European Free Trade Association. Increasing trade dependence between the two groupings was institutionalised when they signed free-trade agreements with each other, creating thus a wider European free-trade area in manufactures. The strong push towards deepening integration among EC countries, manifested in the Single European Act in 1985, and the dismantling of non-tariff barriers to trade and factor flows in the EC by 1993, made it necessary for EFTA countries to secure access on equal conditions to their most important export market and thus prevent trade diversion. The ensuing agreement on the European Economic Area responded to these demands, but did not resolve the apparent asymmetry in EEA decision-making. This emanated from the supremacy ofEC legislation over EEA rules, thus making EFTA countries passively adjust to EC norms. Consequently, Finland applied for membership in the EC in March 1992, with effect from 1995. The latest phase in the integration process, the Treaty on European Union, has an aim to further deepening, e. g. the formation of the economic and monetary union by 1999.

Book Synopsis Australia by : International Monetary Fund
Download or read book Australia written by International Monetary Fund and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1998-11-20 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia's recent economic performance has been impressive. It has experienced steady growth since the early 1990s and inflation has averaged just 2 percent over the same period. This strong showing marks a departure from the performance of the postwar years, when falling productivity and rising inflation caused Australia's per capita income to slip from one of the highest among OECD countries to merely average. This economic turnaround is explored in this book edited by Anoop Singh, Josh Felman, Ray Brooks, Tim Callen, and Christian Thimann of the Asia and Pacific Department.
Book Synopsis The State in Western Europe by : Wolfgang C. Müller
Download or read book The State in Western Europe written by Wolfgang C. Müller and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing exclusively on the functional rather than the territorial level, this book reveals that the reshaping of the state in western Europe involves different policies across Europe and conflicting tendencies in the impact of the various reform programmes. Whilst the state may be in retreat in some respects, its activity may be increasing in others. And nowhere, not even in Britain, has its key decision-making role been seriously undermined.
