Book excerpt: In 1991, four Central European countries (the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia) decided to form a political alliance called the Visegrad Group to explore paths of cooperation in various domains. Since the fall of communism, these countries have followed a formidable development trajectory that culminated with their integration in the European Union in 2004. In this thesis, we approach this region using a new macroeconomic theory that provides a framework to evaluate the complexity of economies and their productive structures. After analyzing trade data at a world level we find that V4 countries have complex economic structures. They also demonstrate a high level of robustness as they maintain consistent Economic Complexity Rankings when we vary the theory's underlying assumptions. We show that V4 countries have acquired capabilities relevant to many sectors, which provides them with numerous development opportunities. Based on those findings, we suggest policy recommendations leading both to stronger regional integration and to the creation of a more attractive business environment.

Book excerpt: Presents alternative prospects for the development of science and technology in central Europe as a whole over the next 10-15 years while political, economic, and social factors are also changing with more speed than predictability. The model used identifies the major problems, challenges, and assets of the region; the major actors and variables and their interdependency; and scenarios for change in the overall region, recognizing that each country may well follow a different path. Book excerpt: On March 12, Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic formally acceded to the Washington Treaty establishing NATO. NATO had invited the three countries to accede to the alliance in July 1997. In 1989, Poland, Hungary, and Czechoslovakia (which later split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia) became the first countries in central and eastern Europe to shed their old communist systems of government through a combination of revolution and reform. In varying degrees in each country, the process of transformation led to economic hardship and political fragmentation. After a prolonged period of recession, all of the central European economies have experienced sustained economic growth. Many East Central European countries have since become integrated into numerous western institutions and have sought entry as full members in NATO and the European Union. The United States has advanced relations with these countries since 1989 and established and maintained economic assistance programs for them. Since 1994, the Clinton Administration has strongly backed NATO enlargement to Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic. The U.S. Senate and the President ratified NATO's enlargement in April and May, 1998. Secretary of State Albright accepted the accession documents from the three countries on March 12, 1999. The United States has also expressed strong support for the eastward enlargement of the European Union.

Book excerpt: The origins of this volume lie in the history of collaboration on regional development research between the editors and many of the authors over a period of ten years. Through a series of international research projects, conferences and seminars debating the emerging regional development challenges and regional policy responses in Central and Eastern Europe, the idea of a book that would take a comprehensive, systematic look at the issues was born. After a decade of reform, the book was conceived as an opportunity to take stock of the regional problems and disparities associated with the transition process and regional development policy challenges confronting regional, national and European policy-makers.

Book excerpt: Annotation This volume is one in a series initiated by the United Nations University Institute of Advanced Studies on the inter-relationship between globalisation and urban transformation. It identifies and describes the inter- and intra-urban transformations of Central and Eastern European cities and considers their pre-1945 historic legacies, the socialist period, and their contemporary transition towards market oriented and democratic systems. The dramatic changes since 1989 including the collapse of Communist ideology, the break-up of the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia, the end of the Cold War and the impact of globalisation and European integration, have reconfigured this region and affected their re-integration into European and global networks. This book first examines the similarities and differences between significant Central and Eastern European cities, comparing the differing patterns of historical context and socialist legacies before 1990, and the impacts of internal and external forces on re-shaping these cities and their paths of transformation since 1990. It also examines the role of contemporary planning within the overall development of Central and Eastern European cities. The conclusion demonstrates the similarities and differences between Central and Eastern European cities and their re-integration into global networks.
