Book excerpt: Excerpt from Economic Inquiries and Studies, Vol. 1 The essays here selected for re-publication were written at intervals during a period of more than thirty years. Accordingly they do not all speak from the same time, and that time the present. It is considered best, however, to print them substantially as they were written in the first instance, with the indications they contain of different circumstances, and a different atmosphere, from those now existing. They do not suffer, I trust, from a comparison between the ideas and anticipations they contain, and those which would now be expressed when new developments have taken place, and fuller information on some points is obtainable. Apart from other reasons for this course, it so happens that one or two of the essays belong to the history of the discussion of the subjects of which they treat. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Progress and Poverty, Vol. 1: An Inquiry Into the Cause of Industrial Depressions and of Increase of Want With Increase of Wealth; The Remedy The views herein set forth were in the main briefly stated in a pamphlet entitled Our Land and Land Policy, published in San Francisco in 1871. I then intended, as soon as I could, to present them more fully, but the opportunity did not for a long time occur. In the meanwhile I became even more firmly convinced of their truth, and saw more completely and clearly their relations; and I also saw how many false ideas and erroneous habits of thought stood in the way of their recognition, and how necessary it was to go over the whole ground. This I have here tried to do, as thoroughly as space would permit. It has been necessary for me to clear away before I could build up, and to write at once for those who have made no previous study of such subjects, and for those who are familiar with economic reason ings; and, so great is the scope of the argument that it has been impossible to treat with the fullness they deserve many of the ques tions raised. What I have most endeavored to do is to establish general principles, trusting to my readers to carry further their applications where this is needed. In certain respects this book will be best appreciated by those who have some knowledge of economic literature; but no previous read ing is necessary to the understanding of the argument or the passing of judgment upon its conclusions. The facts upon which I have relied are not facts which can be verified only by a search through libraries. They are facts of common observation and common knowledge, which every reader can verify for himself, just as he can decide whether the reasoning from them is or is not valid. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Survey of Contemporary Economics, Vol. 1 The American Economic Association wouici regard with dismay an incapacity of its members - because of a too confining division of labor to conceive noble sentiments, judge of private duties, and assess the in retests of their country. These qualities rest upon more than technical expertise: they require a knowledge of human history, philosophy, and politics. But, more immediately, they require that the economist look beyond the regression coefficients, propensities, balances of accounts, and equilibria of forces within his own laboratory to the whole arena of economic life. The primary purpose of the present volume is to provide to the economist outside a particular field an intelligible and reliable account of its main ideas - both analytical devices and their practical application to public policy - which have evolved during the last ten or fifteen years. For most of the less abstruse and technical subjects, it is hoped that the qualified layman, the beginning graduate student, and the public servant will also read with profit. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Economics, Vol. 1 The order of the topics has been determined more by convenience for exposition than by any strict regard for system. In general, a subject has been entered on only when the main conclusions relat ing to it could be followed to the end. Yet so close is the connec tion between the different parts of economics that it has been nec essary sometimes to go part way in the consideration of matters on which the final word had to be reserved for a later stage. Taxation has offered, as regards its place in the arrangement, perhaps the greatest difficulties. It is so closely connected with economics that some consideration of it seemed essential; whereas public finance in the stricter sense, whose problems are political quite as much as economic, has been omitted. Yet a suitable place for taxation was not easy to find. I concluded finally to put the chapters on this subject at the very close, even though they may have the effect of an anti-climax coming as they do after those on socialism. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to Economics This book is an outgrowth of classroom discussions. It contains in substance the talks on economics which have been made, for the past eleven years, to my Classes in Cornell and New York Universities. NO apology is offered for the fact that this volume is limited to a discussion of principles. Even the concluding chapters on corporations are designed to exemplify princi ples. The time has long since passed when a single volume can treat exhaustively the whole field of economics. I shall be more than content if this work justifies the scope indicated for it in the title - Introduction to Economics. Designed as an introduction, this book will serve as a means to the end of a more intelligent study of economic questions. It does not dispense with the necessity of read ing the many excellent treatises devoted to the different phases of economics; rather it distinctly calls for such read ings. It merely prepares the mind of the student for the thought contained in the more advanced and specialized works on the subject and the practical applications they reveal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Economics an Introduction for the General Reader AN apology is needed for adding another to the large num ber of books that attempt to' deal with the whole subject matter of Economics in a single volume. I offer two pleas in extenuation. The first is that nearly all existing introduc tions to the subject are intended primarily for the University student. The pious wish is generally expressed that they may be of use also to the general reader; but the general reader's special needs and opportunities are seldom borne in mind. His needs are different, inasmuch as he has not the guidance of a teacher and the leisure of the student; on the other hand, his opportunities are some compensation for these disadvan tages, since he has usually a practical interest in the economic system and an experience of its working, which the academic student lacks. It seemed, therefore, worth while to try to do for the economic organization as a whole what Bagehot and Mr. Hartley Withers have done for a part of it, the credit system to explain the principles of its construction and working in the language of ordinary life, and with reference to the experience and interests of the ordinary man. While it would need a Bagehot to succeed, I hope that the mere attempt will have done something to make it easier for the general reader to perceive the bearing of economic studies on the political and social problems in which he is interested. Book excerpt: 'In this remarkable collection of essays, Holton and Turner demonstrate that Parsonian sociology addresses the most central problems of our time – issues of sickness and health, power and inequality, the nature of capitalism and its possible alternatives. They develop a mature and original perspective on Parsons as the only classical theorist who avoided crippling nostalgia. Holton and Turner not only talk about Parsonian sociology in a profound and insightful way, they do it, and do it well. As sociology moves away from the rigid dichotomies of earlier debate, this book will help point the way.' – Jeffrey Alexander, Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in Sociology, UCLA
