Book excerpt: Excerpt from Economic Influences Upon Educational Progress in the United States, 1820-1850: A These Submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy, University of Wisconsin, 1906 In a progressive age institutions, - legal, political, social and educational, ' - always lag behind economic progress. This is the normal result due to the action of reactionary or conservative forces, called precedent, which are crystallized into law, custom and sentiment. In order to understand the progress of educa tion, the modifications in its methods, aims and values, it is. Necessary to consider not only the changing social, economic and political conditions during our special period, but also to roughly survey the preceding period in which are found the roots of the later vigorous growth, or, in other words, the modi fying and restraining influences which bear upon progress dur ing the later epoch. The influence of New England was very marked throughout the entire westward movement of population. New England men became leaders, and carried with them and impressed upon the various new communities, New England customs, manners, religious beliefs and educational methods. Imitation played a considerable role in the development of the West. The other settlers were dominated and influenced by the strong, individ ualistic man from New England, and were soc-n found adopt ing the customs and ideals of the latter. On account of this fact, if for no other reason, the attention may during the study of the early period of our history, be directed chiefly to New England. Book excerpt: A compelling compilation of short entries, longer topical essays, and primary source documents that chronicles the historical development of the United States from an economic perspective. Based on a work originally published in 2003, The American Economy: A Historical Encyclopedia has been thoroughly updated with information on the accounting scandals of the early 2000s and the recession of 2008, including the government stimulus and bailout programs and the recession's impact on key markets. With more than 600 short entries, 31 longer essays, and 32 primary source documents, the encyclopedia spans American history from colonial times to the present. Researchers will discover detailed information on people, events, and government actions that have shaped our economy, with entries on such seminal issues as slavery, migration patterns, the welfare state, the rise of the city, and the development of financial institutions. Throughout, special attention is paid to the interdependence of economics with political, social, and cultural forces. Covering everything from the national debt to monetary policy, law, unemployment, inflation, and government/business relations, this work is the ideal go-to resource for quick answers, in-depth analysis, or direction for further research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, an eminent educational historian examines some important aspects of American schooling over the past centuries, illuminating the relation between education and other broad changes in American society and providing a historical perspective for contemporary efforts at school reform. Maris Vinovskis critically reviews and integrates recent work in educational history and provides new research on neglected topics. He discusses such issues as: the gradual shift from the family to the public schools in the responsibility for educating the young; the rise and fall of infant schools between 1840 and 1860; the crisis in the teaching of morality in the public schools of the mid-nineteenth century; early efforts to provide schooling for impoverished children; and the evolution of the belief that education improves individual economic and social mobility. He also studies school attendance and discovers that a much higher percentage of children may have attended public high schools in the nineteenth century than has been assumed, investigates when the practice of placing children in grades according to their age became widespread, and assesses whether different age groups in previous eras varied in their support for schooling--as they seem to be doing now.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps no other crusade in the history of the U.S. provoked so much passion and fury as the struggle over slavery. Many of the problems that were a part of that great debate are still with us. Louis Filler has brought together much information both known and new on those who organized to defeat slavery. He has also re-examined the anti-slavery movement's ideals, heroes, and martyrs with historical perspective and precision. Contrary to popular belief, the anti-slavery movement was far from united. It included abolitionists as well as a variety of reformers whose activities place them among the anti-slavery forces. These included men as different in background and temperament as William Lloyd Garrison and John Quincy Adams. Portraits of the many protagonists, their hardships, and their quarrels with Southerners and Northerners alike, bring to life this exciting and tumultuous period. Filler also examines the many related reform movements that characterized the period: feminism, spiritualism, utopian societies, and educational reform. The volume traces the relationship of the antislavery movement to abolition and probes their connection with the several reforms that dominated the period. He brilliantly recaptures a sense of the contemporary consequences of the reformers efforts. This is an absorbing and important survey of the problems--political, social, and economic--that made this period so crucial in the history of the U.S.
