This book was released on 2006-07-23 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2004 in the subject Business economics - Economic and Social History, grade: 2,0, Turku School of Economics (Department of economics), course: Economic History and Development, language: English, abstract: Nowadays oil is still the world’s most important single source of energy. The world’s industry is influenced by the cost of energy which, in turn, is influenced by the price of crude oil, taxation and other factors. If the cost of energy goes up, then prices of goods and services will increase, subsequently it will cause lower availability of products, higher transportation’s costs and in turn lower economic growth. The latter will influence negatively the efficiency and productivity of the whole world’s industry. This means that if oil prices go too high or too low there will be unlikely consequences for both oil producers and oil consumers. This paper analyzes the oil crisis of 1970ies. The first section concerns the history of the October War (6 – 23 October 1973) that led to the oil embargo, one of the most dramatic events for the world economy. The embargo lasted six months, beginning on 17 October 1973 and ending on 18 March 1974. The second section deals with the impact of the energy crisis on different countries. It caused terrible consequences for the economies of all industrialized countries such as recession, inflation, unemployment, lost economic growth and stagflation. But the essential question is whether the energy crisis was a real shortage or mainly a matter of politics.

This report assesses the potential economic impact of a multilateral oil embargo on Nigeria, the world oil market, and the U.S. economy. GAO also examines the political viability of undertaking such an action. Finally, GAO assesses the potential economic impact of a U.S. unilateral oil embargo on Nigeria, the world market, and the U.S. economy, as well as its potential political impact on Nigeria.
Book Synopsis The Economics of World War I by : Stephen Broadberry
Download or read book The Economics of World War I written by Stephen Broadberry and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-09-29 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique volume offers a definitive new history of European economies at war from 1914 to 1918. It studies how European economies mobilised for war, how existing economic institutions stood up under the strain, how economic development influenced outcomes and how wartime experience influenced post-war economic growth. Leading international experts provide the first systematic comparison of economies at war between 1914 and 1918 based on the best available data for Britain, Germany, France, Russia, the USA, Italy, Turkey, Austria-Hungary and the Netherlands. The editors' overview draws some stark lessons about the role of economic development, the importance of markets and the damage done by nationalism and protectionism. A companion volume to the acclaimed The Economics of World War II, this is a major contribution to our understanding of total war.
Download or read book Breakdown written by Tim Watkins and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2023-11-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Suppose I told you there was a "pin" which burst every major economic bubble of the industrial age. And suppose that "pin" left a signal in data preceding the ensuing economic crash. Suppose that prior to 1929, 1973, 1980, and 2008, that "pin" appeared months and sometimes years before the crisis went mainstream. In Breakdown: The economic impact of peak oil, Tim Watkins argues that the "pin" was a shortage of the world's primary energy source. In 1927, a global coal shortage caused prices to spike upward, raising costs across the economy and - particularly in the USA - bringing the boom of the "roaring twenties" to an end. The 1929 Wall Street crash and the Great Depression of the 1930s followed. In the late 1960s, as US oil production reached its peak, the Texas Railroad Commission cartel lost its ability to fix world prices. As the oil price rose, inflation hit those western states which had been deficit spending on everything from social programs to wars. The consequence was the end of the post-war currency system and the arrival of the OPEC cartel, whose October 1973 oil embargo gave the west - which was a lot less dependent on oil in those days - a taste of how difficult life would be if the oil stopped flowing. In 1979, it was the Iranian Revolution and the Iran-Iraq War (not St. Paul Volcker) which drove oil prices up, triggering the depression which brought inflation (but not stagnation) to an end. This time is differentThese crises were each temporary. By 1929, the USA was leading the way to the oil age. The developed world would follow between 1945 and 1973. And even with the arrival of OPEC, there was no appetite for depriving the world economy of oil. Indeed, despite the rate of oil production falling after 1973, the volume continued to grow right up to November 2018. But in 2005, conventional crude had peaked, setting in chain the events leading to the 2008 crash... which inadvertently created the conditions for the brief expansion of the US fracking industry. But by the end of 2018, all oil production - including condensates and natural gas liquids - was in decline. Even without the pandemic lockdowns, we would have had a recession. But with growing evidence that we have passed peak oil production, and with no energy-dense alternative power source, not only is a deep recession inevitable, but - barring an energy miracle - the western way of life is over. A shrinking economy is now inevitable.
Book Synopsis The Great Inflation by : Michael D. Bordo
Download or read book The Great Inflation written by Michael D. Bordo and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2013-06-28 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Controlling inflation is among the most important objectives of economic policy. By maintaining price stability, policy makers are able to reduce uncertainty, improve price-monitoring mechanisms, and facilitate more efficient planning and allocation of resources, thereby raising productivity. This volume focuses on understanding the causes of the Great Inflation of the 1970s and ’80s, which saw rising inflation in many nations, and which propelled interest rates across the developing world into the double digits. In the decades since, the immediate cause of the period’s rise in inflation has been the subject of considerable debate. Among the areas of contention are the role of monetary policy in driving inflation and the implications this had both for policy design and for evaluating the performance of those who set the policy. Here, contributors map monetary policy from the 1960s to the present, shedding light on the ways in which the lessons of the Great Inflation were absorbed and applied to today’s global and increasingly complex economic environment.
Book Synopsis Economic Impact on the Free World of the Oil Crisis, October 1973 - March 1974 by : Richard L. Nidever
Download or read book Economic Impact on the Free World of the Oil Crisis, October 1973 - March 1974 written by Richard L. Nidever and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Arab-Israeli October 1973 war resulted in an oil embargo against countries supporting Israel and substantially higher petroleum prices charged by oil-exporting countries. The essay presents pre-war petroleum conditions, the development and effect of the oil embargo, international economic imbalances created by higher oil prices, and the impact of the energy shortage and higher prices on US economy and industrial activities. The seriousness of trade imbalances caused by higher oil prices and the shift of economic power from oil-consuming to oil-producing nations is developed. The newly gained economic strength of oil-producing countries and how the wealth is being used is discussed. The current inability of the Western World to cope with or influence the actions of the oil-producing countries is also presented.

Download or read book Oil Shock written by Elisabetta Bini and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-05-27 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1973 'Oil Shock' is considered a turning point in the history of the twentieth century. At the time it seemed to mark a definitive shift from the era of low priced oil to the era of expensive oil. For most Western industrialized countries, it became the symbolic marker of the end of an era. For many oil producers, it translated into an unprecedented control over their energy resources, and completed the process of decolonization, leading to a profound redefinition of international relations. This book provides an analysis of the crisis and its global political and economic impact. It features contributions from a range of perspectives and approaches, including political, economic, environmental, international and social history. The authors examine the origins of what was defined as an 'oil revolution' by the oil-producing countries, as well as the far-reaching effects of the 'shock' on the Cold War and decolonization, on international energy markets and the global economy. In doing so, they help place the event in its historical context as a key moment in the transformation of the international economy and of North-South relations.

Book Synopsis The American Economy by : Anton Brender
Download or read book The American Economy written by Anton Brender and published by Centre for European Policy Studies. This book was released on 2018-04-24 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year, 25% of the world's output is produced by less than 5% of the planet's population. The juxtaposition of these two figures gives an idea of the power of the American economy. Not only is it the most productive among the major developed economies, but it is also a place where new products, services and production methods are constantly being invented. Even so, for all its efficiency and its capacity for innovation, the United States is progressively manifesting worrying signs of dysfunction. Since the 1970s, the American economy has experienced increasing difficulty in generating social progress. Worse still, over the past twenty years, signs of actual regression are becoming more and more numerous. How can this paradox be explained? Answering this question is the thread running throughout the chapters of this book. Anton Brender and Florence Pisani, economists with Candriam Investors Group, offer the reader an overview of the history and structure of the American economy, guided by a concern to shed light on the problems it faces today.
