Book excerpt: The cornerstone and principal feature of this book includes the urgency and necessity priority and nanometer scale (where size is measured in one billionth of a meter) are in possession of nanoscale practical application delivery, convergence and the transformation of both the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS), 2012, and the United Nations International Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities, Rev.4, into sources of global competitive advantage worldwide economic growth. The challenge that has blocked this global nanotechnology priority strategy is the 2007-2008 to 2012-2013 financial, economic, monetary, banking and corporations crisis and collapse. Leading factors in the creation of this financial and economic crisis include the huge global over-the-counter (OTC) derivatives accumulation in excess of the demand for dollars. This challenge was orchestrated by mega aggregate concentration that consisted of voting rights in major corporations, structure of corporate concentration, institutional shareholders, and interlocking directorates. There were catastrophic and calamity consequences accompanied by U.S. Federal Reserve Asset Purchases.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines ways in which formerly prosperous regions can renew their economy during and after a period of industrial and economic recession. Using New York’s Capital Region (i.e., Albany, Troy, Schenectady, etc.) as a case study, the authors show how entrepreneurship, innovation, investment in education, research and political collaboration are critical to achieving regional success. In this way, the book provides other regions and nations with a real-life model for successful economic development. In the past half century, the United States and other nations have seen an economic decline of formerly prosperous regions as a result of new technology and globalization. One of the hardest-hit United States regions is Upstate New York or “the Capital Region”; it experienced a demoralizing hemorrhage of manufacturing companies, jobs and people to other regions and countries. To combat this, the region, with the help of state leaders, mounted a decades-long effort to renew and restore the region’s economy with a particular focus on nanotechnology. As a result, New York’s Capital Region successfully added thousands of well-paying, skill-intensive manufacturing jobs. New York’s success story serves as a model for economic development for policy makers that includes major public investments in educational institutions and research infrastructure; partnerships between academia, industry and government; and creation of frameworks for intra-regional collaboration by business, government, and academic actors. Featuring recommendations for best practices in regional development policy, this book is appropriate for scholars, students, researchers and policy makers in regional development, innovation, R&D policy, economic development and economic growth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of collaborative consumption, peer-to-peer systems, and not-for-profit social enterprise heralds the emergence of a new era of human collectivity. Increasingly, this consolidation stems from an understanding that big-banner issues—such as climate change—are not the root causes of our present global predicament. There is a growing and collective view that issues such as this are actually symptoms of a much more vicious, seemingly insurmountable condition: our addiction to economic, consumption, and population growth in a world of finite resources. Nanotechnology and Global Sustainability uses nanotechnology—the product of applied scientific knowledge to control and utilize matter at atomic and molecular scales—as a lens through which to explore the interrelationship between innovation, politics, economy, and sustainability. This groundbreaking book addresses how stakeholders can actively reshape agendas to create positive and sustainable futures through this latest controversial, cross-sectoral technology. It moves beyond issues of efficiency, productivity, and utility, exploring the insights of 22 contributors from around the world, whose work spans the disciplines of science and the humanities. Their combined knowledge, reinforced with various case studies, introduces an exciting prospect—how we can innovate without economic growth. This new volume in the Perspectives in Nanotechnology series is edited by Dr. Donald Maclurcan and Dr. Natalia Radywyl. Dr. Maclurcan is a social innovator and Honorary Research Fellow with the Institute for Nanoscale Technology at the University of Technology Sydney, Australia. Dr. Radywyl is a social researcher and Honorary Research Fellow in the School of Culture and Communication at the University of Melbourne, Australia. She is also an Adjunct Research Fellow in the Faculty of Life and Social Sciences at Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne. This book is written for a wide audience and will be of particular interest to activists, scholars, policy makers, scientists, business professionals, and others who seek an understanding of how we might justly transition to sustainable societies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nanotechnology, as shortly described as the study of manipulating matter on an atomic and molecular scale, is one of the most dynamic and promising industries, receiving a great deal of attention from researchers, business leaders, investors, and policymakers around the world. In Making It to the Forefront, Nesli Aydogan-Duda has assembled a distinguished group of authors to analyze the particular challenges and opportunities of nanotechnology emergence and management in the developing world. In so doing, they address the issues from several angles, ranging from cultural issues to capital markets, industrial clusters to government policy and legal structure. Drawing from in-depth research and case studies in Turkey, Latin America, India, China, and Iran, and a comparison with the development of the industry in the United states, the authors present a cross-cultural approach, with particular emphasis on the strategic nature of the nanotechnology industry for economic development, consumer welfare, and homeland security. Among the topics they consider are the importance of knowledge transfer from universities to the market and, more generally, the interface between science and its commercialization—and the institutional infrastructure that is necessary to maximize the potential of science and technology. In doing so, the authors provide unprecedented theoretical and empirical contributions to the study of nanotechnology, and, more generally, insight into the complex business, political, and cultural environment that must be established in order for such an industry to thrive in the context of a developing country.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nanoscale science and technology, often referred to as "nanoscience" or "nanotechnology," are science and engineering enabled by our relatively new ability to manipulate and characterize matter at the level of single atoms and small groups of atoms. This capability is the result of many developments in the last two decades of the 20th century, including inventions of scientific instruments like the scanning tunneling microscope. Using such tools, scientists and engineers have begun controlling the structure and properties of materials and systems at the scale of 10?9 meters, or 1/100,000 the width of a human hair. Scientists and engineers anticipate that nanoscale work will enable the development of materials and systems with dramatic new properties relevant to virtually every sector of the economy, such as medicine, telecommunications, and computers, and to areas of national interest such as homeland security. Indeed, early products based on nanoscale technology have already found their way into the marketplace and into defense applications. In 1996, as the tremendous scientific and economic potential of nanoscale science and technology was beginning to be recognized, a federal interagency working group formed to consider creation of a national nanotechnology initiative (NNI). As a result of this effort, around $1 billion has been directed toward NNI research since the start of FY 2001. At the request of officials in the White House National Economic Council and agencies that are participating in NNI, the National Research Council (NRC) agreed to review the NNI. The Committee for the Review of the National Nanotechnology Initiative was formed by the NRC and asked to consider topics such as the current research portfolio of the NNI, the suitability of federal investments, and interagency coordination efforts in this area.

Book excerpt: The cornerstone and linch-pin of the assessment of Chapter One manifest itself in the (i) galvanization of numerous inventions, innovations, discoveries and huge production of nanotechnology and nanometer-scale practical applications of nanodevices, nanostructures, nanosystems, and global management of nanotech industries, growth and its maximization of global competitive advantage, and the (ii) conglomeration of nanometer-scale technologies driven multinational enterprises, cross border transactions, strategic alliances, high degree of concentration, and global management in contrast to the global economic crisis, threats, and challenges. Chapter Two gives prominence to the Japanese mega-industrial concentration directions in nanotechnology global industries, investment, growth and diversification underwritten in combination and centralization of huge sources of financing and loanable funds made available by joint Japan-China use of massive reserves of government-owned. The distinguishing feature of Chapter Three is the global competitive advantage market dominance generated by the creation, discoveries and innovation of Japan/China nanotechnology and practical applications of nanometer-scale technologies revolution high degree of concentration that contrast to and surpass competitiveness embedded in the strong bilateral U.S. and China Strategic and Economic Dialogue, and the U.S./Japan Investment Initiative. The Japan/China nanotechnology multinational enterprises high degree concentration are engaged in the widespread use of nanotechnologies groundbreaking transformation to creative and innovative nanodevices and nanostructures leading to the global competitive advantage, where size is measured on a scale of 1 to 100 nanometers (nm); one nanometer is equal to one billionth of a meter or 1000 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair. The underutilization of practical applications of nanotechnologies is evident in Chapter Four where the distinguishing feature is the global demand for Africa and the Middle East Area (The Area) huge mineral resources and production exceed the Area's supply technical capabilities. Chapter Five assesses additional revenue sources and investment for financing health care for the uninsured trough establishment of commercialization and transformation of patents and licensing agreements of U.S. hospital inventions and discoveries under the U.S. Department of Defense Military Health System (DoD MHS), with practical applications of nanotechnology advantages.

Book excerpt: Nanoscale science, engineering, and technology, often referred to simply as "nanotechnology," is the understanding, characterization, and control of matter at the scale of nanometers, the dimension of atoms and molecules. Advances in nanotechnology promise new materials and structures that are the basis of solutions, for example, for improving human health, optimizing available energy and water resources, supporting a vibrant economy, raising the standard of living, and increasing national security. Established in 2001, the National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) is a coordinated, multiagency effort with the mission to expedite the discovery, development, and deployment of nanoscale science and technology to serve the public good. This report is the latest triennial review of the NNI called for by the 21st Century Nanotechnology Research and Development Act of 2003. It examines and comments on the mechanisms in use by the NNI to advance focused areas of nanotechnology towards advanced development and commercialization and on the physical and human infrastructure needs for successful realization in the United States of the benefits of nanotechnology development.
