Book excerpt: Excerpt from Economic Foundations of Society Modern sociologists are still groping about for a point of departure from which to explain the complex of social phenomena. It was easier for the philosophers of the last century, for all were then agreed that Society was to be "rightly constituted by victorious Analysis." But Philosophism has had its day, and Positivism now reigns in the domain of social science. We no longer hope to reconstitute society upon a fabulous state of nature; we are seeking now to discover the natural laws of social evolution. On the one side there are the biological sociologists who would determine the principles of the new science by analogies drawn from the animal world. But it is not enough merely to substitute super-organic for organic evolution, and proceed at once to confer biological definitions upon sociological facts. True, the terminology of the science is thereby enriched and its methods somewhat improved; but the principles peculiar to social growth still remain to be discovered. There is also a group of psychological sociologists who seek the motives of collective life in the individual instincts of the man. But personal proclivities are so largely the result of historical inheritance and the social environment, that there is constant danger in pursuing this method of confusing cause with consequence, and thus becoming involved in a vicious circle. It is difficult, besides, without some guiding principle, to hit upon instincts that are especially characteristic of the human species, and at the same time sufficiently original and universal to apply to all social phenomena. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foundations of Economics In the year 1885, under the influence of Carlyle and llushin, I set myself to investigate the Condi tion-of-england-question, and with what I now see to have been singular good fortune I began on the problem of over-production. Is over-production the cause of Hard Times? I have come to a solution of that. Which satisfies myself. And while doing so I have had to recast most of the economic formulae. Some of them I have attached as untrue. Others I have replaced by new definitions, which seem to me to go a little deeper into the truth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of the Economic Philosophy of Society, Government and Industry However political economists may seek to dodge it by their definitions, Political Economy is a criticism upon statesmanship, so long as it continues to be any thing. They may say it is a science of sales only, and that there is nothing of a political nature about it; that it has been wrongly named; that it should be called Catallactics, or Plutology, or the like. But to this the statesmen may reply: Why, then, do you bore us with it? We have no time to do more than acquaint ourselves with those sciences and arts which have a bearing upon government. You say yours has not. If your science is that of selling and exchanging, go on with your didactical exposition of swapping and trading. It has no more to do with us than a treatise on Weaving or spinning. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Society The present study, with its wide outlook and its resolute determination to see facts as they are, should have much value for all students of latter-day politics and economics in Europe; for though Rathenau is mainly concerned with conditions in his own land the same conditions affect all countries to a greater or less degree, and he deals with general principles of human psychology and of economic law which prevail everywhere in the world. It is not too much to say that The New Society constitutes a landmark in the history of economic and social thought, and contains matter for discussion, for sifting, for experiment and for propaganda which should occupy serious thinkers and reformers for many a day to come. His suggestions and conclusions may not be all accepted, or all acceptable, but few will deny that they constitute a distinct advance in the effort to bring serious and disinterested thought to the solution of our social problems, and in this conviction we offer the present complete and authorized translation to English readers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once relatively confined to parts of Europe and North America, commercial societies are now found in many other cultures and continents. Yet despite the international spread and growth of commercial order, the moral, economic, and legal foundations of commercial society remain poorly understood, especially in those countries where it first took root. Guided by the thoughts of Alexis de Tocqueville, Samuel Gregg's The Commercial Society identifies and explores the key foundational elements that must exist within a society for commercial order to take root and flourish. Gregg studies the challenges that have consistently impeded and occasionally undermined commercial order, including the persistence of 'corporatist' values and political movements seeking to equalize social conditions. This book offers a historically-grounded analysis for modern audiences interested in philosophy or the history of economics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foundations of a Free Society brings together some of the most knowledgeable Ayn Rand scholars and proponents of her philosophy, as well as notable critics, putting them in conversation with other intellectuals who also see themselves as defenders of capitalism and individual liberty. United by the view that there is something importantly right—though perhaps also much wrong—in Rand’s political philosophy, contributors reflect on her views with the hope of furthering our understandings of what sort of society is best and why. The volume provides a robust elaboration and defense of the foundation of Rand’s political philosophy in the principle that force paralyzes and negates the functioning of reason; it offers an in-depth scholarly discussion of Rand’s view on the nature of individual rights and the role of government in defending them; it deals extensively with the similarities and differences between Rand’s thought and the libertarian tradition (to which she is often assimilated) and objections to her positions arising from this tradition; it explores Rand’s relation to the classical liberal tradition, specifically with regard to her defense of freedom of the intellect; and it discusses her views on the free market, with special attention to the relation between these views and those of the Austrian school of economics.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rise and Fall of Society: An Essay on the Economic Forces That Underlie Social Institutions Jurisprudence has come around to the same idea, holding more and more that human behavior is not a matter Of per sonal responsibility as much as it is a reflection Of the social forces working on the individual; the tendency is to lay on Society the blame for crimes committed by its members. This, too, is a tenet of sociology, the increasing popularity of which, and its elevation to a science, attest to the hold that collectivism has on our times. The scientist is no longer hon ored as a bold adventurer into the unknown, in search of nature's principles, but has become a servant Of Society, to which he owes his training and his keep. Heroes and heroic exploits are being demoted to accidental outcroppings Of mass thought and movements. The superior person, the self starting captain of industry, the inherent genius - these are fictions; all are but robots made by Society. Economics is the study of how Society makes a living, under its own tech niques and prescriptions, not how individuals, in pursuit of happiness, go about the making of a living. And philosophy, or what goes by that name, has made truth itself an attribute Of Society. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Political Economy: With Some Inquiries Respecting Their Application, and a Sketch of the Rise and Progress of the Science Other engagements, while they prevented the publication of a new edition of this work, which has been long out of print, afforded time for additional observation and consideration; and these have far ther strengthened the conviction, that the principle on which we proceeded in drawing up the edition of 1830 is, on the whole, the best. In this edition, consequently, a still greater extension has been given to the practical parts, or to inquiries respecting the real or probable influence of different systems of economical legislation, over the wealth and wellbeing of society. The work, indeed, is no longer to be regarded as a mere attempt to trace and exhibit the principles of Political Economy; but also as an attempt, however imperfect, to exhibit their more important applications.
