Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 20 December 2015, the Korea-China Free Trade Agreement (FTA) entered into force. The Korea-China FTA would impact both economies' welfare in the long run, elevating it to a higher level compared to before the FTA was concluded. However, it must be pointed out that in the short run, trade activities between Korea and China might be affected by external/internal economic forces such as the persistent global trade slowdown and weak domestic economic growth, and non-economic forces such as THAAD and non-tariff barriers. Thus, it might be impetuous to examine the economic impact on the Korean and Chinese economies just a year after the Korea-China FTA was concluded. Nevertheless, it would be worth examining the positive changes that have occurred over the last year, and providing constructive suggestions to both countries in order to accelerate the materialization of the benefits of the Korea-China FTA.This article investigates the major changes after the Korea-China FTA in terms of trade of goods and services, digital trade, and investment. Section II covers a brief analysis of the trade of goods between Korea and China. Section III underscores the distinctive features of international digital trade between Korea and China. Section IV provides facts on trade in services and investment. The last section presents policy implications for the Korea-China FTA.

This book was released on 2017 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English Abstract: This paper estimates the economic effects of China's FTAs with ASEAN, Chile, Pakistan, ANZ, GCC, Hong Kong, Korea, and Korea and Japan, and compares liberalization gains from each. This paper is differentiated from other studies in that the errors in measurement arising from changes in databases resulting from China's WTO accession are controlled. The major findings and implications of this paper are as follows. First, CGE analyses ignoring the impacts of China's accession to the WTO overestimate China's economic benefits (China-ASEAN: 61%; China-Hong Kong: 112%; China-Korea: 42%; China-Japan-Korea: 25%). Second, CGE analyses ignoring the impacts of China's accession to the WTO overestimate economic benefits for partner countries (China-ASEAN: 59%; China-Hong Kong: 119%), whereas they are underestimated in the case of the China-Korea FTA (42%) and the China-Japan-Korea FTA (25%). The reason for underestimation can be explained by the production network based on vertical division of labor of production processes (fragmentation) in the East Asia. Third, the impacts of China's WTO accession on the Chinese economy are far greater than those of China's FTAs with considering countries. Fourth, the gains created from China's FTA policies are very small or almost negligible. Combining the third and fourth implications, it can be said that China continues to enjoy economic gains from free trade governed by multilateral liberalization of institutions and market forces. This also implies that China is likely to use FTA policy as a strategic tool to thwart possible changes in international order away from the present free-trade and multilateral system, which prevent China from sustainable realization of economic gains from trade.

Book Synopsis Evaluation of a Decade of Korea's FTA Policy by : Young Gui Kim
Download or read book Evaluation of a Decade of Korea's FTA Policy written by Young Gui Kim and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We analyze Korea's FTA policy based on the outcomes of recent bilateral FTAs, in terms of achieving policy objectives. While many previous studies mainly focused on trade impacts under bilateral FTAs, this study analyzes the overall economic impact of FTAs in terms of growth and welfare, as changes in bilateral trade may affect global trade and the general economy in a variety of ways. In order to analyze the overall effect of FTAs, we adopt the Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) approach. With a CGE model, the macro economic impacts of FTAs can be calculated taking into account the complicated interactions among economic agents and industries. The growth effect in the EU shows the high-est results, followed by 0.9% growth and an additional 0.43% and 0.11%, in the ASEAN and Chile respectively. In addition, by com-paring the overall growth effect of FTA on total economic growth in 2013, the growth impact of FTAs accounted for 1.19% among 3% of total economic growth in Korea. This implies that Korea, as one of the most open economies in the world, could sustain positive growth rates due to FTAs such as the Korea-ASEAN FTA, despite the trade collapse during the global financial crisis.

Book excerpt: This publication displays the menu for choice of available methods to evaluate the impact of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs). It caters mainly to policy makers from developing countries and aims to equip them with some economic knowledge and techniques that will enable them to conduct their own economic evaluation studies on existing or future FTAs, or to critically re-examine the results of impact assessment studies conducted by others, at the very least.
Book Synopsis A Korea-Kenya Free Trade Agreement and Its Economic Impact by : Geoffrey Musyoki Kitetu
Download or read book A Korea-Kenya Free Trade Agreement and Its Economic Impact written by Geoffrey Musyoki Kitetu and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purpose - This study assesses the impact of a potential Korea-Kenya FTA on the global economy, which includes the US, EU, UK, China, and Japan, using the Global Trade Analysis Project (GTAP) model.Design/Methodology/Approach - The study employs a static global multi-sector CGE model using the GTAP database version 10 with the base year of 2014. For this study, we aggregate the 141 regions and 65 sectors of the GTAP database into 16 regions and 57 sectors. Four policy simulations were implemented based on tariffs and ad valorem equivalents (AVEs) of non-tariff measures (NTMs) estimated by Kitetu and Ko Jong-Hwan (2021).Findings - Simulation results suggest that the real GDP of Korea will likely increase by 0.001% to 0.002%, with welfare increasing by US$1.8 million to US$74.7 million. In comparison, the real GDP of Kenya will likely rise by 0.003% to 0.045%, while welfare will rise by US$1.8 million to US$ 75.3 million. Imports by both countries will rise at a higher rate than exports. For Kenya, domestic output increases in agriculture, extraction, and service sectors, and for Korea, output goes up in processed food and light and heavy manufacturing sectors.Research Implications - The novelty of this paper is in the first empirical quantification of the economic impact of a Korea-Kenya FTA on not only its members but also its trading partners, such as the US, EU, UK, China, and Japan. Moreover, this study provides a comprehensive overview of the impact of a potential FTA between Korea and Kenya by reducing and eliminating tariffs and AVEs of NTMs.
