Book excerpt: In this paper, we provide an overview of the concerns surrounding the variations in the calculation of risk-weighted assets (RWAs) across banks and jurisdictions and how this might undermine the Basel III capital adequacy framework. We discuss the key drivers behind the differences in these calculations, drawing upon a sample of systemically important banks from Europe, North America, and Asia Pacific. We then discuss a range of policy options that could be explored to fix the actual and perceived problems with RWAs, and improve the use of risk-sensitive capital ratios.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an integrated framework for risk measurement, capital management and value creation in banks. Moving from the measurement of the risks facing a bank, it defines criteria and rules to support a corporate policy aimed at maximizing shareholders' value. Parts I - IV discuss different risk types (including interest rate, market, credit and operational risk) and how to assess the amount of capital they absorb by means of up-to-date, robust risk-measurement models. Part V surveys regulatory capital requirements: a special emphasis is given to the Basel II accord, discussing its economic foundations and managerial implications. Part VI presents models and techniques to calibrate the amount of economic capital at risk needed by the bank, to fine-tune its composition, to allocate it to risk-taking units, to estimate the "fair" return expected by shareholders, to monitor the value creation process. Risk Management and Shareholders' Value in Banking includes: * Value at Risk, Monte Carlo models, Creditrisk+, Creditmetrics and much more * formulae for risk-adjusted loan pricing and risk-adjusted performance measurement * extensive, hands-on Excel examples are provided on the companion website www.wiley.com/go/rmsv * a complete, up-to-date introduction to Basel II * focus on capital allocation, Raroc, EVA, cost of capital and other value-creation metrics

This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last decade, portfolio credit risk measurement has improved significantly. The current state-of-the-art models analyze the value of the portfolio at a certain risk horizon, e.g. one year. Most popular has become the Merton-type one-factor model of Vasicek, that builds the fundament of the new capital adequacy framework (Basel II) finally adopted by the Basel Committee On Banking Supervision in June 2004. Due to this approach credit risk only arises from defaults, and the model provides an analytical solution for the risk measures Value at Risk and Expected Loss. One of the less examined questions in this field of research is, how the time to maturity of loans affects the portfolio credit risk. In practice there is common agreement that credit risk rises with the maturity of a loan, but only few solutions considering different maturities are discussed. We present two new approaches, how to cope with the problem of the maturity in the Vasicek-model. We focus on the influence of the maturity in the theoretical framework of Merton and show solutions from empirical data of four rating agencies. Our results are close to the parameters, that are used in the maturity adjustment of Basel II and may help to get a better understanding on economic capital allocation of long-term loans. -- Basel II ; Capital Adequacy Requirements ; Probability of Default ; Default Mode Models ; Maturity Adjustment ; Time Horizon

This book was released on 2002-04-18 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: In their role as financial intermediaries, banks have the inherent task of assuming risks. This statement follows Diamond s model (1984) that financial intermediaries exist because they have a comparative advantage in the production of private information. Higher competition and complexity as well as a riskier environment however have increased the importance of managing and controlling one of the banks core risks: credit risk. Before analysing the implications on specific credit risk instruments, the thesis will describe the relevant content of The New Basel Capital Accord and explain the general context of credit risk and capital management within a bank. An analysis of the implications of The New Basel Capital Accord implies the question of how the new incentive structures will modify credit risk and capital management activities within banks and shape the competitive environment of the banking industry. More specifically, it will be investigated how the significance and type of credit risk and capital management will change and what effect The New Basel Capital Accord will have on the development of credit risk measurement instruments. The paper will also describe the impacts of the new Accord on the market for credit derivatives and securitizations and on the structure of these transactions. Moreover, it is important to consider how the scarce and essential resource capital will be affected and what potential conclusions can be drawn. The thesis will show that The New Basel Capital Accord is a major step forward in banking regulation that will better align regulatory and economic capital. It will encourage the usage of internal rating approaches, credit derivatives and securitizations. It will also influence capital allocation and lead to an extended use of active portfolio management. As a consequence of changed incentive structures the analysis will indicate that The New Basel Capital Accord will be an important driver for the advancement and improvement of credit risk measurement and internal credit risk models. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Basel II regulatory capital formula could imply substantial gaps between the long run PD and the short run historical average. Hence, banks might need to raise their short run historical average of internal PD substantially. Under through-the-cycle rating system, they might have to increase it even more when the economy is in booming period. With more realistic assumption of credit migration, however, we find that gaps are much smaller in many cases. We show, through simulation and a credit card portfolio, that adjustment in the short run PD can generate substantial variation in BASEL II regulatory capital.
