Book excerpt: In this report the cost of using low temperature geothermal energy resources for direct heating applications is compared to the costs associated with conventional heating fuels. The projects compared all involved replacing conventional fuels (e.g., natural gas and fuel oils) with geothermal energy in existing heating systems. The cost of using geothermal energy in existing systems was also compared with the cost of new coal-fired equipment. The costs for the geothermal retrofit projects were estimated based on the results to date in five projects partially funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). These cost estimates are highly realistic since four of the five projects are operational and the other project is currently under construction. The five projects examined are: Diamond Ring Ranch, which uses geothermal water from a previously existing well to heat several small buildings and to dry grain on a private ranch in South Dakota. (Operational: 1979); Klamath YMCA, which uses geothermal energy to heat a swimming pool and to provide space and water heating to a YMCA Building in Klamath Falls, Oregon. (Operational: 1980); Pagosa Springs, Colorado, where the local government is developing a near-the-surface geothermal resource to provide district heating for at least 127 businesses, residences, and public facilities. (Operation planned: 1981); Philip, South Dakota, where a local government has developed a small district heating system to heat five school buildings and at least eight businesses. (Operational: 1980); St. Mary's Hospital, which provides space heating and hot water preheating to a hospital in South Dakota. (Operational: 1980).

Book excerpt: To date all books on geothermics have emphasized its use for generating electricity, with applications of lower grade resources for direct heating meriting only a brief chapter. This book brings together research from a range of scientific journals and 'grey' literature to produce the first comprehensive text on geothermal heating. Economics form an important part of the book. It provides a step by step analysis of the various ways in which thermal waters can be used to provide space heating and of the advantages and disadvantages of different approaches. The final section of the book provides case studies of 31 geothermal heating schemes in France, USA and Iceland.

This book was released on 2003 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Development of a geothermal district heating system covers full range of activities from the determination of geothermal reservoir to the delivery of geothermal energy successfully. Economic assessments are come true in the early stages of geothermal developments. The goal of this thesis is to realize a detailed economic assessment for Balçova-Narlıdere Geothermal District Heating System (GDHS) which is one of the largest district heating systems in Turkey with its current heating capacity of 50 MWth. Tasks in geothermal district heating investments are looked over at the beginning to make a correct economic evaluation and make future development in this geothermal field easy under the discipline of project management. Internal rate of return method which is commonly used financial tool to find the profitability of investments is applied to this investment. The economic analysis begin with the calculation of end of 2002 values of capital investment costs, revenues and operating costs since the existence of past cash flows. Future operating costs are determined according to the yearly expenditures realized in 2002. Future revenues are determined in accordance with the capacity of current heating system and energy utilization prices valid in 2002-2003 heating season. If the sustainability of a resource is considered in the design, the prospective geothermal district heating system could be operated in a long period. However, long-term period projects contain economic uncertainties for the future cash flows. The overall life of Balçova-Narlıdere GDHS is considered as 20 years after year 2001 and uncertainties are considered in this study. Calculations are realized according to various scenarios in which operating costs are constant throughout 20 years. To determine these scenarios, operating costs in 2002 which reflects the current expenditures are either decreased or increased by some percentages. In addition, 60 different pricing plans have been taken into consideration in these scenarios to demonstrate the effects of energy utilization prices on the profitability of investment. The continuity of current price policy for Balçova-Narlıdere GDHS is discussed and energy utilization prices per 100 m2 are suggested for these scenarios. On the other hand, taxes paid to government in Balçova-Narlıdere GDHS investment are investigated to show the benefits of geothermal investments from the viewpoint of government. Because of the development in production of some equipment like heat exchangers, pipes and changing in marketing strategy, the costs of these equipment are reduced. At the end, internal rate of return method is repeated for the current cost of the investment. The energy utilization prices for 13 different scenarios are found for this situation and results are compared with the prices determined to meet the real cost of the investment.

Book excerpt: This textbook is a translation of the German textbook "Rechnen fUr Lagerstattenkundler und Rohstoffwirtschaftler, Teil 1" published by the Ellen Pilger Publishing Company. Those passages in the German edition which were especially written for the German readership were transform ed for English speaking readers. Compared with the German edition many chapters have been slightly amended. The main new additions in this English version are the chapter on linear optimization in Chapter 10.2 and Chapter 12 on the comparison of ore deposits. The textbook is intended for the economic geologist who deals with the evaluation of deposits at an early stage of development. Once an ex ploration project has reached the feasibility stage, the exact calculations of the deposit, the technical and economic assessment will be performed by a team of geologists, mining engineers, metallurgists, and economists. In the early stages of exploration, however, any evaluator of deposits has to be able to cover the whole spectrum himself. Since only order of magnitude parameters are available at this stage, the calculations can only yield order of magnitude results. Precise calculations would even be misleading, since the evaluation does not yet aim at accurate economic assessment but at making the right decision: should the investigation be abandoned or should it be continued at higher costs and with more detailed methods.
