Book Synopsis Minerals, Critical Minerals, and the U.S. Economy by : National Research Council
Download or read book Minerals, Critical Minerals, and the U.S. Economy written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-03-11 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Minerals are part of virtually every product we use. Common examples include copper used in electrical wiring and titanium used to make airplane frames and paint pigments. The Information Age has ushered in a number of new mineral uses in a number of products including cell phones (e.g., tantalum) and liquid crystal displays (e.g., indium). For some minerals, such as the platinum group metals used to make cataytic converters in cars, there is no substitute. If the supply of any given mineral were to become restricted, consumers and sectors of the U.S. economy could be significantly affected. Risks to minerals supplies can include a sudden increase in demand or the possibility that natural ores can be exhausted or become too difficult to extract. Minerals are more vulnerable to supply restrictions if they come from a limited number of mines, mining companies, or nations. Baseline information on minerals is currently collected at the federal level, but no established methodology has existed to identify potentially critical minerals. This book develops such a methodology and suggests an enhanced federal initiative to collect and analyze the additional data needed to support this type of tool.

Download or read book China's Vulnerability Paradox written by Pascale Massot and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the summer of 2022, the Chinese government announced the creation of a $3 Billion state-owned iron ore giant, the China Mineral Resources Group, whose mission is to manage the multifaceted undertakings of iron ore imports, processing and trading, as well as overseas investments. This was an extraordinary announcement and in many ways the culmination of at least fifteen years of frustrations on behalf of leading Chinese iron ore market stakeholders. There is something paradoxical about China's relationship with and impact on global commodity markets. On one hand, within a very short period of time, China emerged from being an almost complete outsider to becoming the principal player in most commodity markets"--

Book Synopsis Soviet Natural Resources in the World Economy by : Robert G. Jensen
Download or read book Soviet Natural Resources in the World Economy written by Robert G. Jensen and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1983-08 with total page 910 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Russia is a huge storehouse of natural resources, including oil, gas, and other energy sources, which she can trade with the rest of the world for advanced technology and wheat. In this book, leading experts evaluate the Soviet potential in major energy and industrial raw materials, giving special attention to implications for the world economy to the end of the twentieth century. The authors examine the mineral and forest resources that the Soviet Union has developed and may yet develop to provide exports during the 1980s. They discuss the regional dimension of these resources, especially in Siberia and the Soviet Far East; individual mineral raw materials, such as petroleum, natural gas, timber, iron ore, manganese, and gold; and finally the role of raw materials in Soviet foreign trade. The authors, representing the United States, Canada, and Great Britain, are primarily geographers, but they include economists, political scientists, and a geologist. Their work is based on primary sources (for most of these reports, current information is no longer being released to researchers) and on interviews with Soviet officials.
