Book excerpt: With the increasing frequency and incidence of international financial crises, a nd in light of the volatile economic and political situation in Lebanon and the region, the choice of exchange rate regime has become critical. The study review s the historical economic background of the Lebanese economy from the civil war up to the present time, explaining the context of Lebanese dollarization. It als o explores different aspects of economic models and thoughts pertaining to excha nge rate regimes. The project tackles each of the pros and cons of fixed exchange rates. Lebanon i s a small economy open to international trade, with little public policy credibi lity. Hence, the loss of monetary policy independence will not affect macroecono mic stability. Lost competitiveness due to the fixed exchange rate does not seem to be a critical issue in Lebanon especially that devaluation in developing cou ntries often proved to be disastrous and lead to harsh economic and social retal iations. The paper also examines the possibility of a basket currency peg. While this reg ime might have proven to be a successful transition phase for some countries, it will not necessarily have the same outcome in a country like Lebanon which curr ently satisfies all the criteria for a hard peg. A simple correlation between economic activity in Lebanon and economic activity in the United States and the European Union respectively, indicates that the Leb anese economy is more strongly correlated with the US economy. The choice of the US dollar as the ultimate anchor currency is also corroborated by the stronger correlation between economic growth in Lebanon and the real LBP/dollar exchange rate.

Book excerpt: The events of the Lebanese War between 1975 and 1985 provide an opportunity to e xamine the effects of repeated major political events and related political expe ctations on exchange rate movements in a small open economy with a floating exch ange rate. This study draws on the literature of economics, finance, cognitive p sychology and political science to establish a theoretical framework within whic h to explore the formation and change of expectations, the role of information, the aggregation of individual expectations and actions and the heuristics and bi ases that were part of the 'learning' process that occurred in Lebanon during th e War years. There is a detailed overview of Lebanese social, political, economi c and monetary history. Two sets of quantitative political events data were obta ined and a twenty-five-week survey of the expectations of a cross section of Leb anese foreign exchange market participants was conducted. Concepts of 'adaptive expectations' and 'adaptive economic behavior' are used to explain the narrative , graphic, quantitative and survey evidence assembled and to evaluate eight prop ositions about the relationship of political events and expectations to the Leba nese pound/U.S. dollar exchange rate during the War years. The principal impact of political events and expectations is found to be indirect, through their impa ct on the Lebanese economy and on Government fiscal and monetary practices. Poli tical events and expectations were found to have had a direct impact only during the two-year period from the end of the Israeli invasion in the fall of 1982 th rough the summer of 1984. Subsequently, political events and expectations were o verwhelmed by adverse economic developments and expectations about the collapse of the exchange rate itself. During the latter period, only positive news, news of 'cooperation,' remained salient and had a systematic impact on the exchange r ate. The results of the survey of expectations demonstrated that the Lebanese fo reign exchange market was not 'efficient' in the sense that the spot rate alread y incorporated all available information and expectations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After November 1998, the adjustable peg of the Lebanese pound to the US dollar played a major role in maintaining financial and price stability in the country. It also helped in the expansion of the economy and in the massive capital inflows to the Lebanese market. Moreover, the high stock of assets in foreign currencies prevented Lebanon from any crisis that may hit the economy. The thesis tests for the unbiased forward rate hypothesis as an optimal predictor of the future spot rate. It also supports the fact that the Lebanese pound became a perfect substitute to foreign currencies during the peg period. The study is conducted for the period January 31, 1991 to October 31. The study is divided into two sub-periods. The first sub-period is prior to December 1998, which is renowned as the dirty float period, whereas the second sub period is after December 1998, which is referred to as the adjustable peg period. The empirical results show that the unbiasedness forward rate hypothesis ...

This report, strongly influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic, paints a bleak picture of the future and describes a contested, fragmented and turbulent world. It specifically discusses the four main trends that will shape tomorrow's world: - Demographics-by 2040, 1.4 billion people will be added mostly in Africa and South Asia. - Economics-increased government debt and concentrated economic power will escalate problems for the poor and middleclass. - Climate-a hotter world will increase water, food, and health insecurity. - Technology-the emergence of new technologies could both solve and cause problems for human life. Students of trends, policymakers, entrepreneurs, academics, journalists and anyone eager for a glimpse into the next decades, will find this report, with colored graphs, essential reading.

Book excerpt: International migration, the movement of people across international boundaries to improve economic opportunity, has enormous implications for growth and welfare in both origin and destination countries. An important benefit to developing countries is the receipt of remittances or transfers from income earned by overseas emigrants. Official data show that development countries' remittance receipts totaled 160 billion in 2004, more than twice the size of official aid. This year's edition of Global Economic Prospects focuses on remittances and migration. The bulk of the book covers remittances.

Book excerpt: In the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) countries price subsidies are common, especially on food and fuels. However, these are neither well targeted nor cost effective as a social protection tool, often benefiting mainly the better off instead of the poor and vulnerable. This paper explores the challenges of replacing generalized price subsidies with more equitable social safety net instruments, including the short-term inflationary effects, and describes the features of successful subsidy reforms.

These dynamics raise new policy challenges. Advanced economies are growing again but must continue financial sector repair, pursue fiscal consolidation, and spur job growth. Emerging market economies face the dual challenges of slowing growth and tighter global financial conditions. This issue of the World Economic Outlook examines the potential spillovers from these transitions and the appropriate policy responses. Chapter 3 explores how output comovements are influenced by policy and financial shocks, growth surprises, and other linkages. Chapter 4 assesses why certain emerging market economies were able to avoid the classical boom-and-bust cycle in the face of volatile capital flows during the global financial crisis.

Book excerpt: Women, Business and the Law 2021 is the seventh in a series of annual studies measuring the laws and regulations that affect women’s economic opportunity in 190 economies. The project presents eight indicators structured around women’s interactions with the law as they move through their lives and careers: Mobility, Workplace, Pay, Marriage, Parenthood, Entrepreneurship, Assets, and Pension. This year’s report updates all indicators as of October 1, 2020 and builds evidence of the links between legal gender equality and women’s economic inclusion. By examining the economic decisions women make throughout their working lives, as well as the pace of reform over the past 50 years, Women, Business and the Law 2021 makes an important contribution to research and policy discussions about the state of women’s economic empowerment. Prepared during a global pandemic that threatens progress toward gender equality, this edition also includes important findings on government responses to COVID-19 and pilot research related to childcare and women’s access to justice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the next 25 years developing countries will move to center stage in the global economy. Global Economic Prospects 2007 analyzes the opportunities - and stresses - this will create. While rich and poor countries alike stand to benefit, the integration process will make more acute stresses already apparent today - in income inequality, in labor markets, and in the environment. Over the next 25 years, rapid technological progress, burgeoning trade in goods and services, and integration of financial markets create the opportunity for faster long-term growth. However, some regions, notably Africa, are at risk of being left behind. The coming globalization will also see intensified stresses on the "global commons." Addressing global warming, preserving marine fisheries, and containing infectious diseases will require effective multilateral collaboration to ensure that economic growth and poverty reduction proceed without causing irreparable harm to future generations."
