Book Synopsis Adaptive Environmental Management by : Catherine Allan
Download or read book Adaptive Environmental Management written by Catherine Allan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-06-05 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adaptive management is the recommended means for continuing ecosystem management and use of natural resources, especially in the context of ‘integrated natural resource management’. Conceptually, adaptive management is simply learning from past management actions to improve future planning and management. However, adaptive management has proved difficult to achieve in practice. With a view to facilitating better practice, this new book presents lessons learned from case studies, to provide managers with ready access to relevant information. Cases are drawn from a number of disciplinary fields, including management of protected areas, watersheds and farms, rivers, forests, biodiversity and pests. Examples from Australia, New Zealand, the USA, Canada, the UK and Europe are presented at a variety of scales, from individual farms, through regional projects, to state-wide planning. While the book is designed primarily for practitioners and policy advisors in the fields of environmental and natural resource management, it will also provide a valuable reference for students and researchers with interests in environmental, natural resource and conservation management.

Chapter One describes the results of a large-scale study on the structure and governance of diverse ecosystem services of Bulgarian farms. Similarly, Chapter Two applies a holistic approach in the assessment of the competitiveness of agricultural holdings in Bulgaria as a whole, as well as in terms of their different specialization. Chapter Three includes information that enables the adequate identification of mine waste deposits, in order to evaluate the impact on human and ecological health, and to implement suitable alternatives for their environmental management. Chapter Four reviews the biomonitoring strategies employed to evaluate the negative environmental impact of mining waste, the remediation alternatives for mining-polluted sites, and environmental management approaches. Book Synopsis Ecosystem Classification for Environmental Management by : Frans Klijn
Download or read book Ecosystem Classification for Environmental Management written by Frans Klijn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Lovelock published his 'Gaia', it was for many people quite a relief. We would not be able to destroy life on earth. Lovelock illustrated this argument with a wealth of mechanistic feedback processes, as we know them to occur in ecosystems. These feedback processes would, somehow, lead the earth as a whole into a new equilibrium. An equilibrium with life within, be it in an entirely changed environment. This is, indeed, let us be earnest: a functioning ecosystem. But what kind of ecosystem? The Gaia-hypothesis triggered a great deal of thought and discussion about what we actually require as an environment. Bio diversity as an abbreviation of biotic diversity has since become the focal point of societal concern. But again, when we think about it, we are not only interested in the sheer number of species on earth. We also have ')ther interests: nearby, in our backyards, in the surrounding countryside, and on the various locations where we would like to spend our holidays. We also want to preserve rare or characteristic species just for their own sake. In fact, we want species in viable populations to be part of communities that are self-maintaining in environments where they belong. We know we cannot ask for this without protecting their environment, which is also our environment. This is where the next fashionable term emerges: sustainability.

Book Synopsis Environmental Problem Solving by : Alan Miller
Download or read book Environmental Problem Solving written by Alan Miller and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human influences create both environmental problems and barriers to effective policy aimed at addressing those problems. In effect, environmental managers manage people as much as they manage the environment. Therefore, they must gain an understanding of the psychological and sociopolitical dimensions of environmental problems that they are attempting to resolve. In Environmental Problem Solving, Alan Miller reappraises conventional analyses of environmental problems using lessons from the psychosocial disciplines. He combines the disciplines of ecology, political sociology and psychology to produce a more adaptive approach to problem-solving that is specifically geared toward the environmetal field. Numerous case studies demonstrate the practical application of theory in a way that is useful to technical and scientific professionals as well as to policy makers and planners. Alan Miller is Professor of Psychology at the University of New Brunswick.
