Book Synopsis Encyclopedia of Modern Coral Reefs by : David Hopley
Download or read book Encyclopedia of Modern Coral Reefs written by David Hopley and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-11-26 with total page 1226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coral reefs are the largest landforms built by plants and animals. Their study therefore incorporates a wide range of disciplines. This encyclopedia approaches coral reefs from an earth science perspective, concentrating especially on modern reefs. Currently coral reefs are under high stress, most prominently from climate change with changes to water temperature, sea level and ocean acidification particularly damaging. Modern reefs have evolved through the massive environmental changes of the Quaternary with long periods of exposure during glacially lowered sea level periods and short periods of interglacial growth. The entries in this encyclopedia condense the large amount of work carried out since Charles Darwin first attempted to understand reef evolution. Leading authorities from many countries have contributed to the entries covering areas of geology, geography and ecology, providing comprehensive access to the most up-to-date research on the structure, form and processes operating on Quaternary coral reefs.

Book Synopsis Biology and Geology of Coral Reefs V1 by : Owen Arthur Jones
Download or read book Biology and Geology of Coral Reefs V1 written by Owen Arthur Jones and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biology and Geology of Coral Reefs, Volume I: Geology 1 focuses on the evolution, reef types, geology, and structural and tectonic factors causing the development of coral reefs. The selection first offers information on the coral reefs of the Caribbean and Indian Ocean, including evolution, physical environment, coral diversity, reef communities, reef types and zonation, and reef morphology and sea-level change. The manuscript then takes a look at the Bikini and Eniwetok Atolls in Marshall Islands; geomorphology and geology of coral reefs in French Polynesia; and the coral reefs of New Caledonia. The publication examines the coral reefs of the New Guinea region and waters of the Great Barrier Reef province. Topics include climate, seasonal variations in temperature and salinity, and water masses in the Coral Sea and their effect on the Great Barrier Reef. The book also ponders on the geomorphology of Eastern Queensland in relation to the Great Barrier Reef; structural and tectonic factors influencing the development of coral reefs off Northeastern Queensland; and sediments of the Great Barrier Reef province. The selection is a vital source of information for marine biologists and readers interested in the geology, evolution, physical environment, and diversity of coral reefs.
Book Synopsis Recent Sedimentary Carbonates by : J.D. Milliman
Download or read book Recent Sedimentary Carbonates written by J.D. Milliman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few fields of research in the earth sciences have produced as much data and litera ture as the study of carbonate sediments and rocks. The past 25 years in particular, have seen a significant increase in studies concerning modern marine and fresh water carbonates. With the present worldwide interest in oceanographic research, marine carbonates have received the bulk of the attention, particularly with respect to shallow-water sediments. However, in terms of the variety of environ ments, compositions and modes of formation, non-marine carbonates probably encompass a wider spectrum than do marine types. Our purpose is to present a two-volume treatise on carbonate sediments and rocks, both marine and non-marine. We have confined ourselves to the discussion of modern (Holocene) environments, sediments and components, assuming that the compilation of these data will not only be relevant to those working with modern carbonates but will also serve as a necessary reference source for those interested in ancient analogs. The first volume, by MILLIMAN, deals almost exclu sively with marine environments, while the second volume, by MULLER and FORST NER, will concentrate on the non-marine carbonates.

Book Synopsis Carbonate Depositional Systems: Assessing Dimensions and Controlling Parameters by : Hildegard Westphal
Download or read book Carbonate Depositional Systems: Assessing Dimensions and Controlling Parameters written by Hildegard Westphal and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-08-05 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carbonate sediments are of increasing relevance for archives of past environmental conditions and for economical reasons in areas of geothermal energy and hydrocarbon reservoirs. Complex interaction of physical and chemical parameters with biological parameters determines the architecture and composition of carbonate sedimentary bodies. This book closes some of the still existing gaps in our understanding of the influence and interplay of physical, chemical, and biological parameters with carbonate sedimentation. An understanding of this interaction is not only required for reliable prediction of reservoir quality but also for a robust interpretation of environmental conditions in the past and the present. It is written by geologists for geologists in order to provide an easily accessible overview of the large amount of relevant information provided by the neighbouring sciences. The approach of the book is to document the modern depositional environments of three classical areas of carbonate deposition, each characteristic for a specific sedimentological setting (isolated platform, attached shelf, ramp) in order to assess both the range of physical, biological and chemical parameters and their sedimentary response. This book presents a comprehensive compilation based on data from published work and unpublished theses, and the integration of these data in order to extract previously undiscovered relationships between the discussed parameters and carbonate deposition.

Book Synopsis Large-scale Experimental Test of Copper Sulfate as a Control for the Florida Red Tide by : George Armytage Rounsefell
Download or read book Large-scale Experimental Test of Copper Sulfate as a Control for the Florida Red Tide written by George Armytage Rounsefell and published by . This book was released on 1958 with total page 684 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first large-scale attempt at controlling the red tide was made in the autumn of 1957. About 16 square miles stretching along 32 miles of shoreline from Anclote Key to Pass-a-grille Beach, off St. Petersburg, Florida, were dusted with copper sulfate (CuSO4·5H2O) at about 20 pounds to the acre by crop-dusting planes. The copper very quickly reduced G̲y̲m̲ṉo̲ḏi̲ṉi̲u̲m̲ ḇṟe̲v̲e̲, the red tide organisms, from several million to practically none per liter relieving the area of the respiratory irritation caused by the airborne toxin of G̲. ḇṟe̲v̲e̲. In 2 out of 5 areas the organisms rose again to concentrations lethal to fish in 10 to 14 days after dusting. This method is not recommended for general control, but will give temporary relief in local situations from the airborne toxin
