Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which juvenile hatchery summer steelhead and wild winter steelhead overlap in space and time, to evaluate the extent of residualism among hatchery summer steelhead in the South Santiam River, and to evaluate the potential for negative ecological interactions among hatchery summer steelhead and wild winter steelhead. Because it is not possible to visually discern juvenile winter steelhead from resident rainbow trout, we treated all adipose-intact juvenile O. mykiss as one group that represented juvenile wild winter steelhead. The 2014 study objectives were to 1) estimate the proportion of hatchery summer steelhead that residualized in the South Santiam River in 2014, 2) determine the extent to which hatchery and naturally produced O. mykiss overlapped in space and time in the South Santiam River, and 3) characterize the behavioral interactions between hatchery-origin juvenile summer steelhead and naturally produced O. mykiss. We used a combination of radio telemetry and direct observations (i.e., snorkeling) to determine the potential for negative interactions between hatchery summer and wild winter steelhead juveniles in the South Santiam River. Data collected from these two independent methods indicated that a significant portion of the hatchery summer steelhead released as smolts did not rapidly emigrate from the South Santiam River in 2014. Of the 164 radio-tagged steelhead that volitionally left the hatchery, only 66 (40.2%) were detected outside of the South Santiam River. Forty-four (26.8% of 164) of the radio-tagged hatchery summer steelhead successfully emigrated to Willamette Falls. Thus, the last known location of the majority of the tagged fish (98 of 164 = 59.8%) was in the South Santiam River. Thirty-three of the tagged hatchery steelhead were detected in the South Santiam River during mobile-tracking surveys. Of those, 21 were found to be alive in the South Santiam River over three months after their release, representing a residualization rate of 12.8% (21 of 164). Snorkeling revealed considerable overlap of habitat use (in space and time) by residual hatchery steelhead and naturally produced O. mykiss in the South Santiam River. Results from our study (and others) also indicated that hatchery steelhead juveniles typically dominate interactions with naturally produced O. mykiss juveniles. The overlap in space and time, combined with the competitive advantage that residual hatchery steelhead appear to have over naturally produced O. mykiss, increases the potential for negative ecological interactions that could have population-level effects on the wild winter steelhead population of the South Santiam River.

Book excerpt: Historically, adult summer steelhead Oncorhynchus mykiss returning to hatcheries on the lower Cowlitz River were sometimes transported and released in the river (recycled) to provide additional angling opportunity for the popular sport fishery in the basin. However, this practice has not been used in recent years because of concerns associated with interactions between hatchery fish and wild fish. Fishery managers were interested in resuming recycling but lacked information regarding effects of this practice on wild steelhead so we conducted a study during 2012–2013 to: (1) enumerate recycled steelhead that returned to the hatchery or were removed by anglers; and (2) determine if steelhead that were not removed from the river remained in the system where they could interact with wild fish.

Book excerpt: Hatcheries whose purpose is to provide for a recreational fishery must minimize impacts on wild fishes. Management to reduce hatchery and wild interactions is especially important on river systems that contain Endangered Species Act (ESA) listed species. I examined adult hatchery summer steelhead, Oncorhynchus mykiss, behavior, current management and a potential future management practice in a river with both introduced and ESA listed steelhead. I used radio telemetry to determine hatchery summer steelhead activity, behavior, and examine management tactics in the Clackamas River, Oregon. I evaluated the movement and distribution of radio-tagged fish between July 2007 through January 2008 using a combination of fixed and mobile radio-tracking. In addition, I used electromyogram (EMG) transmitters to record activity and behavior while the fish were holding in their natal river. An EMG-tagged fish was caught on hook and line during tracking and is the first known instance of estimated activity levels during capture. I evaluated the fish recycling program on the Clackamas River. Recycling involves the transport and release of adult steelhead back downstream following their collection at the hatchery to increase angler success. I estimated that up to 41% of recycled fish were caught in the recreational fishery. However, the majority of fish (44 -67%) were unaccounted for after release and may negatively affect wild populations. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is investigating the feasibility of sterilizing returning adult hatchery steelhead to reduce hatchery and wild interactions and increase recreational fishing opportunity. To evaluate the effect of sterilization on adult fish behavior, I gonadectomized and radio-tagged 40 hatchery summer steelhead and monitored their behavior and contribution to the fishery compared to sham-operated fish. Gonadectomized fish remained in the river, were distributed downstream of control fish, and were caught in the recreational fishery. Based on my results, I conclude that sterilization may be a useful technique to improve angler opportunity while minimizing the impact to wild fish. Behavior and activity of hatchery fish and their responses to management procedures should be closely monitored to better manage hatchery fisheries.

Book excerpt: Rivers are vital ecosystems that support aquatic and terrestrial biodiversity and several ecosystem services, including food, water, culture, and recreation. After centuries of building dams on rivers across the world, dam removal projects are now on the rise due to obsolescence, reservoir sedimentation, insufficient return on investment, or river restoration and conservation priorities. Most dam removal projects have focused on smaller structures (< 10 m in structural height), but larger structures have also started to be removed in increasing numbers as practitioners, river managers, conservationists, and the public have gained more experience with the practice. Recent estimates suggest that only a small fraction of dam removals have been scientifically studied, and include mostly small dams and short time scales. Documenting the long-term ecological outcomes of large dam removal (i.e. >10 m tall) represents a new frontier in dam removal research: projects are more recent and provide an opportunity to understand the complex ecological changes that occur with these transformative restoration projects. Here, we aim to collate a diverse array of papers on long-term dam removal research projects involving larger dams (>10 m) to synthesize the issues, outcomes, tools, and experimental designs used to study large dam removal projects from physical, biological, and ecological perspectives. With this collection, we aim to showcase diverse global projects on ecosystem responses to large dam removal; collect perspectives from different disciplines, fields, and geographies; and synthesize the current state of knowledge in this area. We expect that this Research Topic will be informative to ongoing, long-term ecological restoration and monitoring projects related to dam removal as well as to upcoming large dam removal projects. We welcome contributions from all disciplines addressing the physical, ecological, and ecosystem responses to large-scale dam removal. Contributions could include original research in a specific discipline or area, case studies, or synthesis papers that address one or more of these topics in a transdisciplinary approach. Contributors could address any of the following major topics as related to outcomes of large dam removal, alone or in combination: Freshwater, estuarine, and marine aquatic biota; River and reservoir geomorphology; Terrestrial and riparian vegetation; Wildlife; Sedimentation; and Modelling. We would like contributors to highlight key results in their area of study, cross-disciplinary insights, and lessons learned that could inform ongoing monitoring and research efforts in current projects as well as upcoming large dam removals.

Book excerpt: Post-release behavior of steelhead fry was profoundly influenced by approximately 3 months of rearing in a hatchery. Hatchery-reared fry differed from wild fry (from the same parent population) in their use of various stream habitats. Hatchery- and wild-reared fry competed directly for territories. Although wild fry had some competitive advantage (perhaps prior residence) to counteract the larger size of hatchery-reared fry, wild fry were displaced from the most heavily utilized areas by hatchery-reared fry. Supplementation programs designed to rebuild depleted or declining populations will likely increase in light of continual declines in anadromous salmonid populations. Managers must consider potential consequences regarding genetically-based changes concomitant with environmental influences of hatcheries on important behavioral attributes of juvenile steelhead and other anadromous salmonids.

Book excerpt: Juvenile ecology can affect subsequent population dynamics. This work focuses on two aspects of juvenile steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss) ecology: 1) tradeoffs between naturally-spawned hatchery and wild fish, and 2) the distribution of family groups on the landscape. In Chapter 1, we compared abundance, body condition, and geographic distribution of steelhead fry in a system where hatchery-origin steelhead have been bred to spawn about four months earlier than wild-origin fish. We assigned naturally-spawned steelhead fry to hatchery, wild, or hybrid lineages using a panel of 96 single-nucleotide polymorphisms. The observed mixture proportions were 0.005 hatchery-, 0.313 hybrid-, and 0.682 wild-lineage fish. We hypothesized that the low abundance of pure hatchery-lineage fry may be due to a mismatch between the timing of breeding by the parents and suitable river conditions, resulting in low survival and physical displacement from the system. The second chapter focuses on the capacity for kin selection in juvenile steelhead. Laboratory work has established the capacity for kin-biased behavior, but field studies have been less conclusive regarding whether juvenile salmonids have the opportunity to interact with siblings in the wild. Here, we tested the null hypothesis that siblings are distributed randomly across the landscape. Pedigree analysis was performed in COLONY2 to identify full-sibling groups. Spatial autocorrelation analysis revealed that individuals less than 1 km apart were more genetically similar than expected by chance. Siblings were generally too far apart to interact, but not exclusively: in 18 out of 53 large family groups containing 5 or more individuals, the median distance between individuals was 0 m. We conclude that juvenile dispersal is prominent during the first four months after emergence. We suggest that future research focus more on the conditions and characteristics of siblings that do aggregate versus those that disperse over large or short distances.
